Rebounds from Prednisone

Hey everyone!  Smiley I am SURE this one has been discussed before, but as I am a lazy SOB, I will ask again. (Oh and I couldn't find anything in the search either  Cheesy  Wink

Has anyone experienced major rebounds a day or two after stopping a Prednisone taper down routine?

Last Thursday was my last day on a taper down Pred routine (which kept the beast away for 8 days  Wink... Friday was great too... and then Saturday I got hit about every two hours with KIP 8s and 9s. Since then, nothing.

I believe the Pred and increase in Verap may have clipped my cycle (wasn't due to end until late August). Here's hoping. But just wanted to know if anybody else experienced a rebound "day" like that or if I was just having a bad attack day.

Thanks all!! Cheesy

oh, mark. please dont say that. Im on cloud nine. this is my first time in 12 years using preventative meds (prednisone, verapamil, and melatonin) and i am now 4 days pain free. not even a shadow. I though this was suppose to break the cycle? Does the beast come back for everyone after the prednisone stops or do i still have hope?

Ueli,

Oops... yeah, I didn't use the 4th section (the old time search)... ah well... Now you all will have to answer the questions again! Muhahahahaha....  Grin ;D

Besides, since the last discussion (and this goes for all the discussions that have been repeated) there have been new members to the site who have a wealth of information never shared before. So nyah  Tongue

Seriously though, thanks Ueli. I didn't know the 4th section had to be filled in.  Off to search old posts now...

This is my thought on Prednisone.  Three years ago when I was first diagnosed the doc started me on prednison taper (60 mg) then on down.  It absolutely broke the cycle.  This year I tried it again myself (my dog takes it every day so there was some in the house) at 60 and it stopped for maybe two days and then back it came just as bad as before.  I then after some thought took it up to 90 and tapered from there.  One day perhaps of relief but no more.  I was absolutely devastated.  So I can't say why it works sometimes and why not sometimes.  But if you can get even one day i guess it's worth it.  but many tend to get giddy on prednisone and you gotta take it early in the morning cause it can make it hard to sleep nights and it messed up my stomach as bad as heavy drinking does.  i don't know if this has helped at all but that's what i have to tell about prednisone.  a couple days relief then it broke through and came back with that vengeance.  would i try it again?  definitely cause ya never know.  stuey

Thats not a rebound, thats just returning to the cycle.

Typical when you reach the low doses. The only way I have prevented that is to get on high doses of a preventatiuve while, or preferably before, I begin to taper down.

Bryan,
AS I UNDERSTAND IT-Prednisone is not realy meant/
able to "Break" a cycle, but is to be used as a temporary
relief when a cycle starts to allow the verapamil or other
preventitive to kick in.
I THINK  the only things reported to be able to break
a cycle are hallucinagenics(sp?).What dose of Vera are
you taking? It is not effective for me until I reach 960mlg.
at 720mlg I still get shadows and sometimes a
breakthrough,witch I use O2 for.
     Wishing you and all PFDAN,

Sorry KLP, only in extremely rare cases does prednisone actually break a cycle.  Billy is right on.  Make sure you have a plan for when you have to stop the prednisone.

Bryan,
I finnished my first ever prednisone-taper last Tuesday. Within two or three days the CH was back, although I have not had a k-9 or k-10 this week. It never really 'went away' completely on the prednisone, it just got a lot better. I have not been prescribed a classic preventative yet, my nuero is still playing around with my blood-pressure, heart and other meds. My only hope at this point is that according to my logs from last year, my cycle ended the first week in August  Roll Eyes.
I wish you good luck and PFDAN.

At the same time that I started on Pred I also went up from 120 to 240 on verap. Unfortunately this is all the higher verap I can take due to other conditions. Already on the 240 I feel my chest tightening so I am not sure how long I can stay on it.

I don't know guys, I think it might have worked, or at least the higher verap has worked, or I had a really short cycle (god willing) cause I have been pf since saturday and i am just taking Verap and Elavil.  Crossing my fingers.

Thanks for all the feedback though. I appreciate it   Smiley

This is just my experience and observation about Prednisone.

Prednisone does offer me temporary relief.
But, more than with any other drug, Prednisone seems to make the beast bigger and stronger each time the effectiveness wears off.  This is based on 18 years of episodic CH with and w/o Prednisone.

Certainly in my current cycle, the pain got worse *after* Prednisone than before, just a little bit, like an added "definition" or "edge" to the pain.

I'm beginning to feel that it's almost like a pact with the devil.  Short term relief, long-term pain.

In the future, I think I'm going to avoid it altogether...
