Darned pop-up advertising

Is anyone else being annoyed by this stuff? It fills the whole page so that you can't X out of it or reduce the page to get to the X.
When I "control, alternate, delete" it wipes out my browser and I have to start all over again. How does it get on here?

Try pressing the F11 key. In Internet Explorer, it toggles between full screen and regular mode.

It can get on there anytime you hit a web page, any web page can launch as many windows as it likes.
One of the worst sites for this is www.about.com, but as you well know there are many others
Go to www.panicware.com and download a free program called pop-up stopper. You can enable or disable this program as needed, but when it is enabled it prevents 99.9% of those pop-up windows.

If this is occuring when you are not surfing the web then you have probably downloaded a piece of "advertisor-ware". I am sure this is not the correct name for this stuff, but close enough.
Anytime you download a piece of free software (like free solitaire), check the license agreement. With many free programs, when you install them, you are agreeing to have advertisements popping in your face anytime the program feels like it.
Do you have something that looks like a tiny alligator by your clock?

You can also try Alt+F4. That closes the topmost active window on your screen.

None of those work. I've tried. I get another pop-up blocking these functions. You either have to click on something on their page or you're stuck.
It's called fly-in advertising and it's new.

If you hit (alt-F4) it will close the window on the screen, like a pop up. There are some sites (these are probably NOT, the sites that you are talking about  ) that have very fast repeating pop up windows, that can freeze your machine. Just keep hitting (alt-F4) until they all go away. The worst you can do is end up closing the browser.
Of course if all else fails, you follow the Windows mantra..."Reboot....Reboot"

I never down-load stuff off the internet and I don't have an alligator, and it only happens on this site and on my lycos e-mail site.
Next time it happens, I'll see if I can get "properties" to work and get an address. Then I'll post it here and let you try it.........see if you can get rid of it without loosing your browser. I know my hard drive is dying....maybe that has something to do with it.

Take the advice and download Panic Ware's pop up stopper. It is very good. Only bad thing is you have to hit ctrl if you wanna look at java script windows....
Or disable it, which is easy enuf to do.

Oh, these smart ass bastards. I see what they are doing. They are using what is called "modal dialog box". What this means is that until the box is closed, you cannot do anything with the underlying window.
These are usually reserved for things like "are you sure you want to do this", but they have twisted the function around to use it for advertising.
My first suggestion, don't go to these sites. If you have to visit the site, then send them a nasty email telling them you are very displeased. Post their email address here we will flood them with email expressing our displeasure.
Second suggestion, when visiting these sites disable javascript: Tools/Security Tab/Click Custom/Near the bottom of the list/Check "Active Scripting DISABLE".
This will prevent all scripting on all sites, so you will probably end up turning it on and off frequently.
Third, same as above, but set the worst offenders up in the restricted sites list and make the changes there.

If you have Windows, try going into the Control Panel under Settings. Open the "Add or Remove Programs" icon. If you scroll down you will see many different programs. You may or may not recognize some as advertising names, i.e. "Save" with a blue icon next to it... that is one I recently deleted from my auto pop-ups.
Its worth a try, I did this on my home pc, and removed some annoying pop-up ads that were driving me crazy.

If Donna is correct and these are truly fly-in windows, that will not help. It is not an additional program, nor is it really a new window, it is a dialog box for an existing window (so pop-up stopper will not work either).
My previous solutions still stand, with a caveat: this may not be Lycos or ch.com, it may well be the contents of an email. These things are based on standard HTML and therefore can be initiated by any web page or HTML formatted email.
Since I did not see this when I visited Lycos and I have never seen it here, I have to assume it is an email that is doing it.
So, in addition to my previous options I will offer two more: Don't open unsolicited email or use NetScape to check your email, it does not support modal dialog boxes.

One other thing is that you can use a personal firewall like ZoneAlarm to help monitor/control which programs have access to the internet.
Funny that Peppi should mention it, but just in the past couple of days I found that Save program installed on my machine at home. ZoneAlarm caught it trying to access the internet and I disabled it and then uninstalled it.

Now in this case you actually have to do something to launch the "window", but it could occur as the page is loading, after it has loaded or when you try to leave.
The good thing about these boxes is they cannot open yet another window. But the web page (or email) could indefinitely open new dialog boxes as you close the previous one.

The easiest solution to the problem is not to use this shitty M$ browser but something more sensible like Opera (www.opera.com).
With Opera you hit F12 and get the choice to - Accept pop-up windows
- Refuse pop-up windows
- Open pop-up windows in background
No digging through many menu levels to do this.
This is only one of the many advantages over the SOB (Standard Operational Bullstuff) from M$.

Closes the top window, or use ctl+alt+delete to bring up task manager to kill the offending process. This works. I do a bunch of internet stuff and it's becoming a more hostile environment. I use a multi-layered approach to internet security, I do use Windows after all, and this is a good program. I have used it for over a year on several (10+) PC's with no ill effects.
A favorite link of mine is http://www.pcflank.com/index.htm, there is a bunch of good stuff there.

I agree with some earlier posters. The popup stopper is the greatest. I just hit cntrl if and when I want to see something. It is way cool. My husband put it on my pc and I will be forever greatfull.

this installs a program that comes on when you enter your browser, can be configured to kill pop-ups, them *flashing* ads, cookie options, and a bunch of other stuff....
I've found that *some* Pop-up stoppers are *too* effective... interfere with stuff you may want.....

I use Free Surfer with I. E. when I use I. E..
Most of the rest of the browsers have built in pop up control now.
If you want a pretty good browser, check out AVANT browser. It's a combination of IE and Opera. (But still doesn't have all the great features of Opera)
There is another new one out...Slimbrowser. I also tried MYIE2. But the one I use the most, is Opera. The others I use when Opera can't pull up a page or display it properly.
OH! I have found that the XP task manager sometimes does NOT end programs!!
I will have to check out all the suggested stuff here.
