I have been getting these hellish attacks now for at least 6 years. Mine alway's seem to start in late spring early summer. I just started having them again a week ago. I have found something that helps....I take two Bayer asprin before I go to bed. I take them if I have any pain or not. I don't know if its the thinning of the blood or what....I'm no Doctor, but so far so good...knock knock. Any one reading this please e-mail me an answer...Do you get severe pain in your neck. I get it on the same side as the attack. Thats where mine starts. I then feel like something is in my head taking a hot knife right through my eye. Let me know. Your fellow sufferer.....Jeremy jmsuch@msn.com

Hey Jeremy......... First you need to click the 'cluster quiz' button on the left side of the screen and take the test. If it looks like you are suffering from cluster headaches you need a doctors opinion and even better a neurologist's. There is help for cluster pain, verapamil as a preventative, imitrex as a abortive, oxygen delivered through a non-rebreather mask and other meds. Look under the 'medical info' and 'OUCH website' buttons. About the neck pain........this is not a usual symptom of cluster headaches. Do you try to compensate for the pain by holding your head cocked at an unusual angle or press against your fist trying to push the pain away? Glad to hear the aspirin is helping you but pain killers usually do nothing for cluster pain. If you do truly have clusters the best thing is to see a doctor and get some meds like the ones I mentioned earlier. Good luck. Hope it's not clusters. Keep us informed.

Hey Jeremy... sorry for your pain. I have neck pain with my clusters, also. My neuro told me that it is not uncommon. Some of us get pain down the occipital nerve in the back of the neck. It is not usually the excrutiating pain of the primary eye area, but it is a dull throbbing that makes you feel like your neck is weak. I've also had a bit of luck with aspirin. I have to take almost an overdose of it for a long period of time and it will decrease the # and severity of my attacks. I don't believe it's the "pain reliever" portion, but the anti-inflamatory side. It's sort of like poor man's prednisone. I don't recommend it though... it causes all kinds of issues... stomache problems, rebound headaches (not cluster, but tension type), and sometimes hypoglycemia (if you're prown to low blood sugar). In any event... find a neuro and try to get oxygen and imitrex injections (they're our friends). Mark

Welcome Jeremy. This is the place if you have CH. The aspirin is probably harmless but applying to clusters is like trynig to knock out an elephant with a peanut. If these headaches wake you out of a sound sleep, they are likely to be clusters. Stick around and let us know how you're doing. Charlie

You need stronger stuff to deal with the beast. Get thee to a neuro for a proper diagnosis. Go with the info this site provides and describe how it applies to you.

My clusters almost always start in my neck, on the same side the attack is coming on. My husband is so good about rubbing my neck for me whenever and wherever I ask him too. It hurts like hell when he does it, especially when he hits certain spots, but it does help relieve the tension that builds there. As for the aspirin, just be careful. Shitting blood is simply no fun.

If you're taking the stuff for circulation, two is a heavy dose. I take one 325 a day. They sell baby aspirin which is something like 80 or 90. I'm not sure if it's enough. I like Enteric coated aspirin. I think it's a good idea. Good luck kids Chaz

I agree with you on the asprin issue. I know this is just a temp fix. Asprin can be bad for you if takin to much. It is hard NOT to take it when it "seems" to prevent them from occuring. Since I started taking two 325mg asprin before bed I have not been awakened by the HEAD DEVIL for 4 nights in a row. Finding out I have CH yesterday was very interesting to me. I never knew!! All of the symptoms are what I have. I thought they were just migraines. Mine always start in my neck though. This is not a dull pain either. It is very intense and goes quickly to my right eye after attacking the right side of my neck first. Sounds like this is rare??? Thank-you everyone for replying to me. Nice to know there are friends out there who understand and care. Good luck EVERYONE!!! Jeremy

Hi Jeremy and welcome! I took tons of advils over the years but came to realize it wasnt helping a bit, just the fact that the attack was ending anyway. Going to the dr. would be a better option. There are lots of things out there that really do help for most. Imitrex is my choice of abortive but still trying out the preventives to find something that will help. Good luck, Suzy

I also get a really nasty "knot" in my neck and shoulder too..and if I rub on it ,it is quite painful. It usually hurts after my headache.

I think the reason some of us get neckpain after we get hit is the way we hold our heads or in my case Rock and hold it. I hold mine to the side and rock. I think it strains the neck muscles.

Mine is just like Virginia's. Didn't get it so much in the early years. But goes down the neck and into the shoulder, and I think Elaine is right about the cause. Sherry
