Blast from the past

Hi - First post here - wish I was just a visitor but I actually joined the club back in 1979. Then, hallalua! - was thrown out in 1991.
Just been readmitted (actually, five weeks ago) so here I am with the Internet an ally this time round.
The 12-year period ('79 to '91) involved annual episodes that, fortunately, never lasted longer than four weeks and only one shot a night (even though each one felt like the mother of all shots until the next one).

What's making me feel more than slightly uneasy this time round is not just the unwelcome reappearance out of the blue, but the fact that it has now gone on for FIVE weeks with occasional three attacks a day.
Please let this not become chronic - I didn't even know, till I found this site that "chronic" existed  Shocked  - I thought everyone with CH had just the annual episodes.

I don't think I can even contemplate what it must be like to be a chronic sufferer.
Massive sympathies though, for those that are chronic sufferers, and I hope you don't mind if I do my best not to join you.

kwill-

welcome to the site!  At this point, don't even start worrying about being chronic after only 5 weeks.  There are a ton of episodics on this site with much longer cycles than that.  You're not chronic until you've had them for a year....

Trust me, you have enough to deal with without worrying about something that may never happen.  Shocked Just concentrate on your current cycle.

What meds are you using?

I too became grateful for being episodic after learning about the dreaded "chronic" label. I still cannot bear the thought of never ending CH....poor bastards.

Don't worry about 5 weeks, or even 5 months...ask the chronics..that ain't quite enough. I have had many cycles last several months at a time...just not for a whole year...yet.

Hang in there Kwill and lets us know how the next few weeks go.

Kwill,

When you've done a year of ch's, with no meds, and less than two weeks PF....then worry about being chronic.

Get yourself some 02, here is the link that tells you everything you need to know:

Hi Kwill,

Sorry the beast has made a reoccurrence in you life.

Glad you found this site (just wish it was because you wanted to say "Hi", not because of the beast).

Thank you for your comments about the chronic sufferers.

I sure hope things get better soon for you.

Hi Kwill and welcome - sorry you have a reason to be here though.

I'm pretty sure the official definition for chronic is that you stay "in cycle" for at least 12 months with no more than 2 weeks of unmedicated pain freedom during that time.  In other words, if you stop taking your meds and you get 2 weeks or more of pain freedom - you're not chronic.   But that 12 month marker is the real milestone there.  If you stay on your meds (even preventative) and find 2 weeks of no headaches, that's still not considered chronic because you may be masking symptoms with the drugs.

5 weeks is a short cycle, compared to some of the episodics here.  My hubby's last cycle lasted almost 6 months.   Undecided

I hope you find your magic bullet here and that relief is around the corner for you.

Thanks very much, one and all, for your kind words and I really couldn't give a diddly about hijacked threads.  Smiley

Just an answer to the med question: I always kick off with cafergot because it is so damned effective (for me) in the first two or three days - thereafter it becomes useless and I start the round of cocktails. In the past I just piled on all the crap that pharmacists suggested (none of them though, with any CH awareness), but now that I'm a recent returnee to the CH fold, I'm picking up everything I can get on the Web, mostly on this and the OUCH web site.

I have not yet tried O² but intend getting some this weekend or Monday - will also check out the immagrin injection some time soon.

Hope your weekend's as PF as possible.

My last cycle was almost 9 months long. Night and day Kip 8-10 hits, every night and every day.The worst cycle in 26 years. I am still episodic.

I will not say anymore for fear of jinxing myself.
