Hypothalamus, Weight, and Clusters

Evening board, It is been said that the cause of CH comes from the Hypothalamus gland in the brain. I am sure we have all heard that. The Hypothalamus also is in control of body temperature, the retina in the eye and other sources that, may effect our Condition. Please see the following link for more information: http://thalamus.wustl.edu/course/hypoANS.html The reason I put this post up here is for this reason: As I look at the Clusterheads web page that Bob P has put up, I see a bunch of either in shape people or people with high metabolisms. In other words I don't see any overweight people in this group. I am sure some of us feel we have a few extra pounds, but I don't see it in the pictures. My point is this... do a large percent of CH sufferers have a high metabolism (controlled by the Hypothalamus)? If so, in order to break down foods faster does the hypothalamus excrete a toxin into the blood stream that may have some sort of build up in the persons Eye/Temple region? Or because the foods are being broken down so quickly, is there something missing from our digestive system that our brain/nervous system needs to not have CHs. Just my thoughts and research for the day. I am not a doctor in any way, just turning over another stone. Any thoughts from the board? (Sorry so long winded) Bryan

Bryan, Great question and one that I don't believe has ever been mentioned here before. I, personally have a high metabolism, but not sure how to answer the other questions. Maybe Ueli may have some thoughts. LindaH

I've always had 'high' metabolism. Only way I can gain weight is if I lift weights and it goes on as muscle. Back in the days of drinking I could usually 'out drink' most of my friends also. --- Steve, one of many...

If you think I'm posting my weight for all the world to see you're nuts!   I used to have a very high metabolism, and had a hard time keeping weight on, then I had a baby, and had surgery, and my metabolism was cut out I'm currently about 50lbs overweight, so I dunno if it's the actual metabolism, or if it might be something to do with the change in metabolism. Just my 2cents worth. Cat

5' 2", 118 lbs. Very high met. Cold makes me ache. Normal temp is 97.6. Blonde. Green eyes. Course complexion. Not ditzy. Even temperment. Analytical mind.......sounds like most of the clusterheads I've met. For Christmas I want a list of available bacholors. I think I covered it all. Now my theory as to why we have cluster headaches.... for those of you who have read it before, just click to somewhere else now. It's hormomes..............all hormones. Just too darned much or too little testosterone. I've lost 4 pregnancies to this problem. Had to have injections throughout my other pregnancies to be successful. My cluster headaches stopped the day I had my hysterectomy. I was offered hormone therapy. Most women use the combo of estrogen and progesterone. I could only use the estrogen......the progesterone gave me headaches. Where does the release of hormones originate? Yep...the hypothalamus. It would take a very simple medical test to see where our levels are. Maybe it's not JUST hormones.......maybe the ol' hypo gives us an overdose or underdose of everything it controls. I guess we're back to square 1.

5' 4" 115lbs. Used to have a high metabolism, but it slowed down once I hit 30. At one point I got up to 140lbs and had to diet and exercise to get it off. Now I try to be somewhat careful. I wonder about Donna's theory. Of the ladies here, how many of you feel you might have a bit more testosterone than most other women? I don't mean you have to grow beards or look manly, but do you tend to be more "tom boyish"? I'm flat chested and narrow hipped and have always gotten along better with boys than girls. Not as squeemish as most girls (Except when it comes to spiders and by the way Eyesafire....we need to talk!! LOL) I like to work on cars and build stuff. Like to work with my hands. Have a very analytical mind and love dirty jokes. Used to be pretty athletic (was a ballet dancer for 15 years). Very seldom cry (cept when I'm really angry and that just pisses me off to no end!) Have a very high tolerance to pain. Have blue eyes, my factory equipped hair color was blah brown although when young I was blonde and now I'm grey (at least at the roots LOL) I am VERY nearsighted. And I have tiny fingernails. (I know that sounds weird, they don't look weird, they look perfectly fine and natural but if you compare mine with others they don't cover the same amount of space as others. And glue on fake nails are too big. Betcha looked at yours didn't ya? LOL) Ok, I think that covers it. Sherry

Ahh well. Another stone turned and another stone not the answer. Thank you all for playing along. I will continue to do more and more research and ask more and more questions until you all are sick to death of me. Donna, thanks for the hormone input. I'll do some reading on that as well. Again, if you all would like to keep posting to this thread for further "research" purposes, please go ahead. Otherwise, I can see that High Metabolism is prolly not a cause of clusters. <sigh> One of these days we'll get it. Have a great PFDAN everyone! Bryan - the researching fool
