Poll time!   Did anyone's mom smoke cigarettes while she was pregnant with you? Perhaps a correlation, perhaps not... Just curious... Thanks! Bryan

My mom smoked about 3 cigarettes in her whole lifetime. But then, that's probably one of the rare exceptions, otherwise smoking is to blame for everything. Ueli

Ok... disclaimer time... Not trying to blame smoking here, but if it is a cause of this bastard ailment I would like to see that written on the packs of cigarettes here in the US "Surgeon Generals warning, smoking during pregnancy can cause your child to have the most severe pain known to mankind". I myself am a smoker. But yes, smoking does cause some birth defects, and I am currently researching if there has been any studies on Smoking and the development/mal-development of the hypothalamus gland of an unborn child. I just thought I would get some sort of % from the board as to if their mothers were smokers during the pregnancy. Perhaps it will save some research time. Who knows. Thanks Jim, Ueli, & Grant for your responses so far

Yes, my mother smoked Pall Mall's until the day I was born. "My God!" she screamed. "Look what those stinkin', expensive, addictive, birth-defect causin' cancer sticks did to my beautiful baby. He looks like he's having a migraine." She quit the smokes and sued the bastards. Today I still have headaches but I have them in the Bentley or on the yacht. I'm just kidding. I don't really have a Bentley. But Yes, she did smoke then.

Glad to help save you time in research. Since I was born during WWII in an occupied country where ordinary foodstuffs were at a premium, or non-existent, I'd be curious to know what my mom was supposed to use for smokes. Tulip bulb floss maybe? People all around us were eating tulip bulbs at the time -cooked, grated into meal for cakes or boiled into a sickly syrup. Luckily I was too little to eat the stuff.

Mom had 4 kids and smoked the whole time, 2 packs a day. I picked it up myself at 16 and quit when I was 27. I figure I smoked for 28 years total. I am 36 now. Darren

I suffered severe misdiagnosed bouts of CH for over twenty years from ages 30-55. I have been free of any episodes since about 1990. I left a high stress executive job as a basket case. Along the way, I stopped drinking and smoking and had ENT surgery to remove grossly enlarged turbinates from my nose and sinus areas. I have taken all of the CH drugs available during those times and gained some relief from Verapamil and wafting oxygen. I really believe that smoking and drinking were significant contributing factors in my illness. I also eliminated caffeine from my diet as I had been a heavy coffee drinker. I was also a chocoholic. Anyway, my dad was a heavy smoker but my mother never smoked. My mom was a heavy drinker and my dad was a teetotler. Go figure! I still fear that my long period of recovery is not necessarily permanent. I take it one day at a time and have never forgotten the excrutiating pain that I suffered during many, many episodes during the years that the beast ruled my life. God bless all who suffer from this monster. I feel a kinship with each and every one. Jon E

I think it can. If the mother smokes while pregnant the baby is also getting the smoke. I believe the baby can become addicted before birth. Once addicted, always addicted and the baby may take up the habit later in life.

Nope, mom never has smoked. Dad smoked from about age 13-30 and gave it up cold-turkey when I was 7 or 8 years old. (He had two of his older brothers have heart attacks within a month of each other - scared the **** out of him) Later BruceD

Love the Pall Mall ad. Yes, my mother smoked at the time of my gestation and for years thereafter. Presumably she also smoked during my brother's cook cycle, but although he gets occasional migraines he doesn't get clusters. However, since he's a Zen Buddhist chocoholic, nothing much bothers him. Here ya go kids: Mom smoked from 1930 to 1987 when she died. She smoked a little less than a pack of unfiltered Camels a day most of the time and had a couple drinks every week, right through her pregnancy. Dad smoked Camels too. Come to think of it, of his 18 employees, 17 smoked, including me. Our poor bookkeeper. Things were different in 1946. My twin sister never formed and I’m told it was incredibly rare that one would survive. Your guess is as good as mine. I developed CH in 1969 when I was 23 and quit smoking in 1980 when I was 34. My Ch hung on for 11 years after quitting and ended in 1991. What that means, I have no idea. It may have something to do with epilepsy medication but I cannot prove it because nothing had changed at the time. We lack anything definitive about smoking and CH although board members smoke at about twice the national average. This does not mean that Chers do. I have some serious doubts about it. It isn't good for you, costs a bloody fortune and makes life more complicated every day--Especially in New York State. Sorry for the tome. I got carried away. Mean old Charlie
