So Sick of HMOs and Doctors

Ok, I need to vent about the medical profession too... I have shared before that my current Neuro can't get me in until July 16 (and he doesn't know diddly squat about CH anyway), so I asked around for a CH specialist in the area. EyesaFire gave me Dr. Ross's name, so I called up there. They can't get me in until early November... even though I emphasized I had CH and was in a cycle NOW!! So, I called my gp, to see if they could recommend anyone else. Both doctors are out today. OMG - WTF do I have to do to get the meds I need to abort these bastards?!?!?!? I just want see someone who knows what these things are all about and get the proper abortive meds I need, hell even an 02 tank would be great. At least I have my imitrex... Well, anywho, I know my rantings do not solve anything but it is nice to get them out in a place where people understand. Anyone have any suggestions??? My current Neuro knows I am in a cycle right now, but still will not see me or prescribe new medicine until I see him on the 16th of July (I made the appointment May 27). Sick of being in Pain , Bryan

Last cluster I gave up on the neuro my HMO sent me to. I wound up educating my GP and getting him to prescribe everything I wanted. Extra Imitrex, regular release verapamil, O2, prednisone, etc.

Fun, just a thought - some people on this board have had results by going to their local fire station and asking to be let on to theO2 they stock there. Also, there are wonders being done with welding oxygen. Yiou just need the right coupling and a mask of your own. Jonny may be able to tell you how and what and why...

Live4Fun....we got lucky and our "internal medicine" doc knew bout CH....he suprised me how much he knew and he did more research b-4 Brad got in for an apt which was even cooler ! Then the doc took a job out of state and the new doc takeing his patients also knows CH....so maybe one at a clinic could help you faster. We usually don't have to wait but a few days to git in to see him too....that's a big plus cuz Brad's nero had a waiting list of about 6 months !!!!! Our doc also knows how to git around the insurence co's for more imitrex and does it....even tho it's not enuff it is better then just 9 pills a month. Were happy with the doc but of course NOT the insurence co.....no way hoze-zay cuz they suck....good luck to ya. Pam that hates elevator music in docs offices

Ditto to Bob P., Hell with Neuro's. I found a sympathetic knowledgable , young Gp and she prescribed everything I needed. She was also extremely sympathetic and told me that I could walk in during her office hours anytime I had an emergency. This Doc of yours who refuses to prescribe until your appt. is an idiot!! Quack!! Perhaps we need to e-mail these idiots en masse. Telling them how we feel about their indifference to our suffering, and to cc the local newspaper?? Gene

Quacks is rite in alot of cases. Brad's first nero demanded you visit him once to twice a year 'no matter what yer cycle was doin...in or out' to recieve on the spot help with meds or apt's even tho there would still be several month wait but at least get scripts while waiting. Brad didn't continue to go see him when out of cycle (the nero's office was a long drive for him out of town). When his cycle came back 3 years later the doc would NOT help him cuz of us not goin to him yearly dureing that 3 years.....as if to punish us ? Then they demanded he come in and leave them a deposite for them to give him an apt. even tho there was a 6 month wait for us 'bad patients' that didn't follow his routine requirement. We could of done it on credit card but we could see this was goin no where for us fast! This doc was cashin in on head patients !!!! So Brad was without meds till we got on this other track with the internalist doc that helped him "rite away" and always did from then on. OK....was that a rant....sorry ! Pam that doesn't like money mongrols

Thanks for all your feedback. I am going to see my gp tomorrow, whether he likes it or not I got hit HARD again tonight. Imitrex pills suck, btw... IMHO. I need injections, but will my insurance cover injections... Hell No... oh sorry, one a month, yeah like that's helpful Well I'll keep you all posted as to how my gp handles things. Hopefully, I can do a little educating myself and get the stuff I need. PFDANs and Thanks, Bryan

Live4Fun...don't fergit to check with yer doc if he can call your ins. co (physicians hotline with mine) and explain why you need more imitrex injections or pills a month then what they consider. Sumone passed that info on to me sum time ago and it 'worked' so I wanna be sure you know bout it too and hope it works for you. If at least it works to get a few more each month like we do that's better then nothin. Pam that's a member of the ins co hater's club

No one should have to wait to see anyone for that length of time. In Jamestown, you can see a neurologist within a week. These stories make me madder than hell. Perhaps these guys hate it when you come to them with a some idea what you have. They like it when they tell you. Ave is right. Email Jonny. O2 is O2 no matter what the medical types tell you. Other O2 is not "impure" and probably better than the crap we normally inhale. In the meantime, here is my technique. The damn thing will work: Dr. Wright's Circulatory Technique This is not transcendental meditation, imagery, relaxation, or anything psychic. It's entirely physical and takes a lot of work and concentration. Give this method a good workout. It’s not a miracle, but it’s been helpful to many. When I was diagnosed, my neurologist said to treat this as a vascular problem. I was told to concentrate on “redirecting” blood circulation in order to retard flow to the head. This is done by trying to “send” blood into the arms and hands or other extremities. When properly done, your hands will become warm and redder with increased circulation. I also found it easier to concentrate on one hand. This relieves just slightly, the pressure on the affected vessel, which indirectly causes our pain. We all have this ability but it can be exhausting. I was often able shorten my attacks from about half an hour to no more than a few minutes. Sometimes, when awake, I could entirely abort the attack IF I KEPT AT IT. Often, I would suffer only minor discomfort instead of excruciating pain. Do not stop just because your hands are warm or redder. Keep this up until you are sure it's subsided. If you let up or lose concentration, it’s very hard to restart this process. It may take some time but when this works, the relief is almost immediate. I learned this from the doctor in a few minutes. He simply told me to try to keep blood away from the head. He thought it easiest to concentrate on the arms and hands but any place that works for you is fine. He said to think of it as "filling your hands" with redirected blood. It’s important to keep at it THROUGH the pain. This will be difficult, but it’s the only way this technique will work. Don’t let up until you are sure the attack has ended. This will not always work, but I think it will always have at least some effect on the severity and duration of the attacks. It can be useful between medications or while waiting for some other drug to take effect. All it takes is a little practice. It was fairly easy to learn and what I'm writing here is more than I got from the doctor, as I've drawn from my own experience. When awakened in horrible pain, it’s very hard to focus, but I think it’s always worth a try. This costs nothing but hard work, is harmless, non-invasive, and it gives us a fighting chance. I wish you the best of luck - Charlie Strand

Hip hip hooray!! I finally convinced my neuro to put me on Pred before he sees me!! I start tomorrow!! Woo hoo! I sooo pray this breaks the cycle. He still won't give me O2 yet, but baby steps... baby steps for the doctor I guess my recent journal of my cycle since May 23 helped convince him I might actually need treatment now... go figure...

Bryan, I hope everything work out for you. I guess I don't get it how someone can give you an appointment several months from now, what type s___t is this? Are they the only neuro in your State? I just hope all goes well with the prednisone. My neuro specialize in epilepsy which I sortof have and is trying me on stuff for the CHs but at least he tries to help. WHere do you live where doctors treat you this way? I don't know if prayer really helps, but I pray your cycle is broken. Peace to you. Stuey

I found a headache specialist finally who takes my insurance and who can find time to see me July 14 - no cancellations, I'm supposed to check in each morning. I'm in a cycle now and am supposed to be devastated until then. I shoulda gone to medical school so I could treat myself. Now I see what you are talking about

It's a sad, sad world when you have to beg to get a prescription for prednisone that is needed. How I could go on... I'm sure there are some nice neuros out there who know what they are doing, but unfortunately they have so much education, and everyone they see is an emergency, the compassion seems to get siphoned off. I hung onto my wonderful GP, even after I found a neuro. She has seen the site, and has been open to trying options that turn up here. Since the GP prescribes all meds, it simplifies the process. Neuros aren't always great about returning calls, but if another Doctor calls them on your behalf, they always call back. If you can find a great GP who listens and cares, it helps a lot. Best of luck with your appointment, and glad the prednisone has helped. V
