never mt a neuro i liked

I've never had luck w Neuros. They alwast put up roadblocks/referrals required when my ins co doesn't. $/^?* weeks before they can see me for ist visit. Just generally don't seem to want my business. I was reminded about this today from another newbies frustated post. I am 2 weeks into my cycle and was basically told by my local ER to find a DR. I started with a friends wifes Neuro/ figured I had an in. He called first and the Neuro gave him his recpt? number to call. I called/ she was a miserable bureaucratic bitch/ Mean!! Why do you require me to get a referral when my Ins co doesn't?/ No good answer! Something about their time not being wasted by those unwashed souls (like me I assume) who don't really need a neuro. Iexplained to her what the weeks would mean to me/ dozens of insane attacks/ missed work etc. Not interested! I then asked if she were aware that some neuros had claimed that CH was the WORST pain humans could suffer/ no answer. I then asked if this were true what patient scenario could possibly be more urgent/ a higher priority? One would assume that a med specialist deciding to enter the many yrs of training etc. required to practise would be motivated by the oppty to relieve human suffering. Indeed the clusterhead in cycle, to a neuro is the patient he needs to seeASAP! I wonder in a debate situation, how they could possibly argue this.. JUST VENTING Gene

I found a neuro that I like but I have to say when it comes to filling out the rx, he dont know jack shit. My cycle doesnt start till sept but I decided to start filling my imitrex now so i'll have enough to get me through it and everytime he fills out a rx, I bring it to the pharmacy, my insurance co. denies it because its written out wrong. This has been going on for 2 months! Thankfully I finally found someone who works at my HMO that is personally going to get this corrected for me. I have to say that if I was in cycle now and this was happening for the last 2 months, I would have gone down there and killed everyone! Vent away Gene. I'm sure we all have some kind of frustration that we had to go through to get help with this. suzy

I want my old neuro back, but he away on sebatical, researching in the topic of MS. He understood the CH, and knew right away that its what I had. My new one is an a**hole who doesn't believe me when I tell him about the pain I go through every night/morning when in a cycle. He just looks at me like I am a moron who is making things up. Unfortunately, there are not that many Neuro's in my area that my insurance will cover, but I may start looking outside my area. I would friggin drive 6 hours to find a neuro who understands CH if I have to. So, currently, I have a July 16 appt (that I made on May 27) that I have to wait for before he will perscribe more imitrex, or 02, or any other medication. I had to beg him to put me back on the Verap that he wanted me to stop taking (of course as soon as I stopped taking it, is when the current cycle started... go figure... good thing I have no f'ing clue what I am talking about!!!!) And don't get me started on Insurance companies and their BS... Whew!!! Ok, thanks for letting me vent, I feel much better now! BTW, anybody in the Central PA area who knows of a good Neuro/Headache Doc?

Hi Gene, I know what you mean, it is frustrating. I doubt that I would have gotten to visit my current neuro (who is great) without a referral from a GP. Fact of the matter is that many neuro's won't accept patients unless they are referred and they have to use their underlings as a screening wall. That's because there are many people out there who are convinced they need a neuro, when they really don't (basically, they don't want to see patients suffering from hypochondriasis or ordinary maladies). I don't know what to advise about your current situation, but probably it would be a good idea to also start planning for your next cycle. Find a GP, not necessarily an extremely knowledgeable GP, but rather one who is willing to work with the patient and doesn't have so big of an ego that they are offended when you ask for a referral. Ask people you know for recommendations. Try to find one that is associated with a good organization, one who has connections. Build a relationship with the GP. Visit him/her a few times a year... when you have a fever, make an appointment. Schedule a yearly physical. Just don't overdo it. If you think the GP is a keeper, compliment him/her. I know, it doesn't sound like fun, but it might pay off. When you ask for a referral to a neuro, ask for one who is specializes in treating headaches. My first referral was a failure (I had to fire the neuro), then I went back to my GP and asked for a referral to a neuro that specifically treats headaches. Now I have a good neuro. A good neuro makes everything SO much easier. --- Steve, one of many...

Eyes -- THANK YOU!!!! I will give my GP a call and get a referral if I can. That is only like a 45 minute drive for me, so that would be PERFECT!

I've had the same GP for 20 years. When I started having clusters 14 years ago, he didn't have a clue... diagnosed migraines, sinus infections, etc. Finally I suggested about eight years ago that it was clusters. My still clueless GP precribed all the usual narcs which didn't work. Then five years ago...triptans, O2, verapamil, pred, etc. He finally gets it. Doesn't mind me telling him what meds I need, and prescribes them. I had trouble earlier this year when I was forced to see another GP who referred me to a neuro and refused to deal with my CH after that (my regular GP was on vacation). I didn't like the neuro either... way too conservative with the meds. Did you know that more than six Maxalt or Imitrex tabs per month will cause you to have a heart attack??? Now I'm back with my regular GP. I wouldn't trade him for any neuro in the world..
