I thought my cycle was finished and it aint. I got the 10 I guess yesterday at worked. I was in a closed office with the lights off and cursed and oh fucked and oh shitted and cried my ass off. I had taken a Relpax when i felt it coming on and it was like the CA was saying "yeah right take what you want I'm gonna get you". What I wondered and I thought maybe others may think is that our brains and whatever is happening to us during these attacks eventually will happen or has to happen because our brains for some reason have to do what they're doing and whatever they have to do is very painful. I think no matter what abortive I take to abort or prevent, inevitably the 10 is coming no matter what I do to prevent it. I think of some of the attacks as smaller tremors leading up to the major eruption and while all are horrible, eventually the big one catches you. I don't know if I make any sense but that's what I wondered since yesterday. I went in the office managers office yesterday after the attack and must have scared her half to death cause I was shaking and just devastated. Afterward that's when I thought about this stuff. ???

Yes I take imitrex and it works. I just wondered if the phenomenon of these attacks occurs cause the brain is doing something it has to do and that's why the cycle. I don't know if I am explaining right what I'm trying to say.

Stuey, I don't know why but for me it seems like a lot of times cluster cycles will follow stressful times. The solution, NEVER RELAX, STAY STRESSED! Jim

Stuey, the problem with CH is the acute pain. Are you wondering whether the pain is a result of some other necassary function of your biology? PFDANs -Curtis

My opinion, so far, is that the pain is a result of the trigeminal nerve reacting normally to abnormal stimulus. From what I understand, the pain is the result of an irregularity in the hypothalamus generating an anomaly in some aspect of circadean rhythm which causes serotonin modulation to become unstable. Somehow, some aspect of this serotonergic instability stimulates the trigeminal nerve. Thus activated, C-fibers within the trigeminal nerve release vasoactive neuropeptides (such as cytokines), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), substance P (SP) and neurokanin A. The released CGRP and vasoactive intestinal peptides causes the trigeminal nerve to activate again and the blood vessels to dilate abnormally. Some element of this mechanism generates (or fails to prohibit) signals which travel, unmodulated by the spine, through a system of neurons to a part of the brain, which interprets them as CH pain. Stuey, My last cycle ended with random hits for a week. It seems like the beast likes to go out with a bang, then only shadows after that. Opus/Paul

| That's a good one. The link actually leads to a post from this (actully the much revered "old board" message board by some guy named "Drummer". The article he posted (and I linked to) is written by Lars Edvinsson, MD, PhD, a leading medical researcher. I spent a few hours pouring over that article, and it helped me piece together some of the random bits of information I have come across, regarding the mechanism of CH. My little handful (if even that!) of knowledge is pretty much the consolidated version of what I got out of that article. PFDANs -Curtis
