FALLUJA, Iraq (June 5) - A U.S. soldier was killed and five were wounded when an assailant fired at least one rocket-propelled grenade at them in the restive Iraqi town of Falluja Thursday, the U.S. military and residents said. The attack took place as the United States sent more than 3,000 soldiers from the 2nd Brigade and dozens of tanks to the Sunni Muslim town to contain attacks on its forces. A U.S. military spokesman said two American soldiers had also been wounded in Baghdad when two attackers fired on them as they were guarding a bank. No details were available. There are now an estimated 6,000 U.S. soldiers in and around Falluja, including more than 4,000 from the 2nd Brigade. Residents said the soldiers were in front of the police station when they were hit. The explosion made a hole in the outside wall, and pieces of wreckage and intravenous drip bags were on the ground. Bloodstains were visible on the wall and ground. Iraqi crowds gathered in front of the station and raised the Iraqi flag on the entrance. ''The Americans are behaving like the Israeli army. They have been here every night, looking over our homes and preventing us from moving,'' Falah, a resident, said. ''This is a tribal area and we do not accept this. The attacks have nothing to do with Saddam (Hussein),'' he said. The army said the wounded soldiers, from the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, had been driven to a military medical facility nearby. CALDRON OF HOSTILITY Falluja, 45 miles west of Baghdad, is a caldron of hostility to U.S. forces, who killed 15 townspeople in two clashes there in April, following the fall of Saddam. Troops, boosted by more armored cars, were out in force in the streets. Soldiers searched houses as residents were told to stay inside. The army plans to deploy more tanks in the city. ''One second you could be sitting down and the next someone is attacking you from out of nowhere. This is not like the war, when we attacked them,'' Spc. Terry Martin said. Last week, two U.S. soldiers were killed and nine wounded when gunmen attacked an American army unit with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms in the city. The top U.S. commander in Iraq, Lt. Gen. David McKiernan, said Wednesday that attacks on U.S. troops in the area were the work of remnants of Saddam's government, toppled by U.S. and British forces eight weeks ago. Residents of Falluja disagreed, saying the United States did not understand the nature of Falluja or Iraq. ''Saddam's Baath Party was hated here. It used to extort money from us. Services, such as power, were appalling. But people worked hard in smuggling, agriculture and contracting and did well. They do not stand occupation,'' a shop owner said. ''The Sunnis have taken up the mantle of resistance,'' he said. ''The Shi'ites are giving the United States a chance for now. But they will follow.'' REUTERS Reut11:31 06-05-03

Ya know, the more I think about this, the more it pisses me off! I say pull our boys and girls outta there! They were happy for us to rid them of the "baddies" but at the same time hate us! Pull out, let em deal with the rest themselves! I know, I know, I'm not taking into account all the other political shit, but, SO WHAT!!! I'm almost getting to the point where I want to say screw em all! Close all our borders and defend them to the teeth. You got problems? Go ask someone else. We're not going to sacrifice any more of our loved ones blood for ungrateful, hateful, bigoted people who hate us without even knowing anything about us. Sorry. Just pisses me the hell off! Sherry

Americans have never fully understood the tribal culture of the Middle East that stretches back centuries. To think American soldiers can go in and "Win the War" - and everything will miraculously fall into respective place is naive. It's the beginning of the beginning........can't just snip off the top and walk away, the roots run deep. Put a bandaid on one wound and there is a gusher somewhere else...it won't stop any time soon. What is the solution? I don't know. Wish I did. One thing I do know. American soldiers over there have such courage, optimism, hope, good intentions...........makes my heart ache.

Yer all right. Whatever we do in Baghdad isn't going to be cinematic. No one is going to walk off in the fog saying this is the start of a beautiful friendship. Can't close the borders, we are a trading nation but this slaughterhouse of a planet would be better off, if most of the time, we would mind our own business. Take heart folks. We're gonna give the Iraqis a government just like ours....Poor bastards. Charlie

Who said it was over? The same people that tried to convince us of the horde of weapons of mass destruction, missles with chemical weapons ready to fire, the precision of smart bombs (6000 Iraq civilians dead), that oil was not an issue, and that this had something to do with 9-11. The ratings fell. People switched channels. Looked away. We'll be told "what happened" as election campaigns begin. Wage peace....it's easier to mop up. den

I gotta agree with Kim and Charlie on this, but it doesn't piss me of any less. On the other foot the United Nations wouldn't have fared any better than we have acting alone. Getting real tired of people complaining that we are the catalyst to all of the problems in the middle-east, that statement is bullshit and nothing more. As kim said there have been tribal "wars" and disagreements since the beginning of time itself in the middle-east. Their problem is quite simply the separation of church and state and the fact that one is equivalent to the other in almost every aspect of life there. Because of this, no one can decide what is best for the benefit of everyone. whether asked or not to help by the people of the many middle eastern nations, they continuously undermine their own chances for peace. We are a culture to be hated regardless of our intent or track record. We as Americans represent something they cannot achieve due to their hard line religous practices, and at the same time have all but abandoned our own, we are seen as hypocrites, and unholy. Screw em all ......we did our job, we ousted saddam, let them flounder in their own failings. And bring our troops home NOW! Ramon

You know, we've always cared so much about the peoples in this region........ If all we imported from the middle east was dates, we might have less of an interest in this part of the world now that it isn't needed to get to China. Most of them don't have the luxury of being concerned about how they appear. No wonder we're so loved with all our advice. Charlie

We are a good nation. You want nirvana? Gotta wait till yur dead for that prize. While you are on this earth, however, you must make real decisions and most of em have a shit face. Sorry. That's the fact. Make a choice and stik with it. This country still tries to do that. Others could just as simply chop yur head off and starve ya - after all, they've jes about achieved it with their own "beloved" citizens. This country is good. Not perfect. But good. You no likey, go elsewhere. See how much nirvana you get for all yur efforts.... Sorry Ree, I just do NOT UNDERSTAND people that LIVE HERE and have WHAT THEY HAVE pissing in their own PLATE

I don't think anyone said anything bad about our country... Our boys and girls did their job. Now it's time to bring them home. Leave the Iraqis to their own devices since they want us out of there. Give em what they want, to be left alone. Bring our loved ones home. That's all I'm saying. Sherry

There is a Great Deal of anti Americanism reflected - unfortunately we are all on a different page...regretfully. Like I said -- what this country is facing is the beginning of the beginning. I urge everyone to get on the same page -- and quickly, for centuries of hatred are blowin up our ass. End of Subject for Kim.

Sherry, that's cuz ya did nto take into accout all that "political stuff".......which tallys up to a significant portion of most of the above posts............and is what I was talking about, and which you were not. That is the unholy differential my friend. Much as you'd love to ignore it, NOT POSSIBLE. Why I feel apologetic for these facts I dunno

We are a great country. Our job is to let others find out about it like so many did, so many times. It isn't to run around telling others how great we are. Never works. Our peculiar twig of western civilization may be suited only to us. Just a thought. Charlie

Interesting comments. Please bear with me here. I choose to drive forty miles to New Orleans to work. I choose to live across Lake Pontchartrain to reside in the woods. Could I elect to reside nearer to where I work to statistically reduce the risk of death in an auto accident? You bet. You people are smart enough to connect the dots and know where I'm going. It's a voluntary choice. General Washington commanded a voluntary army and knew that in order to eradicate the tyrant, (sorry Wendy), some of his troops regretably would die. Do the people of the Middle East hate us?...Sure they do. Generations have been told by their "religious leaders", "democratically elected officials" and their "free press" that the reason they are eating dirt sandwiches is the fault of the United States. Odd that that fits nicely in deflecting the fact that they (the leaders) are just getting by in thoes sparse palaces. And to further this radicalism they secretly embrace anarchy and contract others to destroy the innocent. All in the name of God, of course. Do I wish that the people of Iraq would snap out of it and get to the business of establishing a new government, free and independent of the religious dogma. You bet. Hell,.. pick up your own garbage you bastards. Regretably, I do not think it will happen if we pull out early. Remember the first war with Iraq? Turd in the punch bowl...Steve G

I agree that the planet could do a lot worse than us. The thing is, it’s important that we keep it that way. At the moment, the holy junta in charge is behaving like spoiled children. For a long time, we’ve been the benevolent cop. Lately, we haven’t been acting that way. It‘s fine to be the tough guy in the barroom but it's not necessary to punch out the little old lady. John Wayne movies are that: movies. George Bush pisses off the rest of the world when he scowls and grinds his teeth every time he speaks. It isn’t necessary to rub it in that he can do pretty much what he wants. Be tough, tell them what we think but remember to at least give them an ear. Our way doesn’t work everywhere. The more we keep telling the rest of the planet how tough and cool we are, the harder it gets. Historically, things tend to get better. I can’t wait until we climb out of this valley. Charlie
