Thought you guys might find this opus interesting:
the night before last I ran out of imitrex shots. 5days into my cycle I had used up my first 20 (why couldn't I have discovered this site sooner, I would have known that I could have killed the agony twice as many times with the TIP! I would have avoided a hellish night/ 4 terrible attacks armed only with ice and hot water.)
8:30 am woke up with attack #5 Called my buddy crying for him to take me to ER.4hours later the condescending ER Doc. consulted the ER on duty neuro, he agreed to another 20 shots despite having used the previous RX in half the prescribed time. Would my insurance let it go by? I doubted it. Was I consigned to another night like last night? I thought so.
I'm a Volvo Salesman currently, and quite a worthy adversary. I left the ER on Memorial day with 5shots from the in hospital pharmacy. Comped!!
Fortunately the Neuro prescribed a prednisone 10 day taper, I was able to start the following morning and so far with few tolerable side effects (no sleep/ intermittent shadows) NO CH!!!!!
Now to the pharmacy: I found the one genius pharmacist/ bureaucrat that wasn't hearing any of it!! He detected my overuse of imitrex and took it upon himself to call the ER and actually get my RX CANCELLED!
My wonderful insurance is symapathetic if hapless, but I think it's straightened out now. Do you believe?
Anyway things are SO MUCH BETTER!!! In no small part due to this site. You have informed me, and I'm way better already. If for just now.
THANK YOU Brother ( you know who you are) for the extraordinary, selfless act of kindness of sending me the wonderful gift.

People who know nothing about clusters don't know that a cluster heads body can take drugs a normal person couldn't. My doctor said he has noticed this in the clusters he has treated.

That's one I hadn't heard before, but certainly rings true with me. For example, when I have gone in for surgery (knee operations, 2) each time they had an incredibly difficult time knocking me out. I tried to tell them before the surgery that my, er, tolerence to drugs was higher than average. I told the anethesiololgist this and he laughed and said 'yeah, that's what everybody says..."
Well, each time I made it into the OR, fully awake. The surgeon was actually pissed off the second time since it took more than 15 minutes for them to bump the medications up to the point where I went under.
Of course, tolerence has nothing to do with toxicity, but it seems like my body just just doesn't react the same way as others. It needs more of whatever is being administered in order to be effective.
Interesting.

That sounds like my recent getting a prescription for Imitrex nightmare. I went to the doctor and convinced him to give me a Rx for injections. When I went to get the Rx filled, I discovered my insurance would not cover it without pre-authorization. When my doctor found out that he would have to request authorization for the insurance to pay for injections... he requested authorization for Imitrex tablets. I was approved for 9 tablets per month... unfortunately they do not work for me. After much wrangling with the doctor, he finally gave me two Imitrex stadose packs (samples), referred me to a neurologist, and told me he didn't want to see me anymore for CHs. 
Fortunately, three members at this website helped me out with some Imtrex injections (thanks again!).  Those, and the two samples from my doctor... split in half... got me through my CH cycle which ended four weeks ago.
My employer is changing to all different insurance plans beginning in July... so my next CH cycle I will get to go through the same hassle again. ???

My Neuro says that he sees the same thing in many of his CH patients, especially me. He says that he thinks that i'm very tolerant to many of the meds used for the treatment of CH and for other disorders. So Gene, you may be able to take that much Imitrex and it not bother you, i know it dosen't bother me and i have heart conditions and high blood pressure. I'm also on verapamil 720 mgs a day, and that helps a lot with the heart condition i have and the high blood pressure.

Most insurances look at imitrex inject as a medical order to fill. You will get no where going through the perscription dept. of your insurance.
I went through this with my HMO. When we (my Dr., me , & his Nurse) finally found out that the "prescription"
area of your insurance will not recognise imitrex inject, we/they contacted the medical side of things.
You have to have the Dr. get ahold of the "Medical"
area of your insurance.
I know this sounds a little strange.
This is what he/we had to do to get imitrex inject approved by insurance.

Then tell the pharmasist to mind his/her on damn business & fiil yr script. The meddlers (pharmasists) might try to give you a hard time..... have your Dr.'s & insurance #'s handy. Having the head of the place's # (Owner,Pres., Vice-Pres.) where you are trying to fiil the script at handy doesn't hurt.
Got a guy (pharmasist) fired because he repeatedly (3 times) denied my imitrex inject on his own.
This was after it was approved on the medical side of insurance (3 times.)
I called the Pres. of the drug store chain & let him know what was going on. He handled it promptly. Got my imitrex inject.
Go to the top if you really want satisfaction, I always say ( & do.)
Don't screw with a CHer & their meds.
Anyway, hope this info helps you or someone else.

unfortunately he wouldn't mind his own busi9ness!! Worse as far as I'm concerned, how about a pharmacist overriding an ER Doc and Neuro??
