Most of them were young. All of them were courageous. All of them understood how important freedom is and that, at times, we must fight to ensure that freedom stays alive. To all that came before us and all that fight for this freedom now... I salute and thank you. AE2 Hebert (known here as oringkid, a nickname given to me during my service in the United States Navy) Now known as Sherry Ragland. I still cry when our flag is raised and our anthem played. And very glad to have helped in some small part to ensure my own right to my own opinion and the freedom to voice it without fear.

Thank you don. This (It is the Soldier,.....) was posted awhile back by someone else. I thought it appropriate to re-post it. vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv It is the Soldier, not the reporter who has given us freedom of press It is the Soldier, not the poet who has given us freedom of speech It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer who gives us freedom to demonstrate It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag. - Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Memorial Day Memorial Day, legal holiday, observed annually on the last Monday in May in most of the United States, in honor of the nation's armed services personnel killed in wartime. The holiday, originally called Decoration Day, is traditionally marked by parades, memorial speeches and ceremonies, and the decoration of graves with flowers and flags, hence the original name. Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, on the order of General John Alexander Logan for the purpose of decorating the graves of the American Civil War dead. It was observed on May 30 until 1971, when most states changed to a newly established federal schedule of holiday observance. "Reflections" by Lee Teter Vietnam Veterans of America, Inc. © VVA Chapter 172 17 North Liberty Street Cumberland, MD 21502 1-800-482-VETS 301-777-7001 http://www.vietnamreflections.com/print.html Several members of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 and emerging realist painter Lee Teter came to the chapter with an inspirational idea that was developed at the kitchen table. As a result of those discussions, the painting "Reflections" emerged. Lee Teter paints with remarkable accuracy, and in this case, he depicted panels 29 and 30 East of the Vietnam Wall. Many names can be seen in their actual position on the Wall. The images of servicemen reflected in the Wall and their comrade were created with live models using a full length glass panel in Teter's studio. The live models were actual Chapter 172 members Jim Williams, Dave Arnold, Jane Bass, Mike Thompson, Bill Custer and Dale Layton. Micki Banks, a veteran who lost his life in Vietnam is also depicted from a family photo. Williams, now painted in business attire, was originally sketched in fatigues but was later changed to reflect a more universal image of surviving veterans. The "Reflections" print is an open edition with an image size of 26" x 19" printed in high resolution using permanent ink on archive quality acid free paper. **While Lee has studied America’s frontier years extensively, he has painted every era from the 18th century to the present. In 1988 he created a portrait of the Vietnam Memorial entitled Reflections. With almost two hundred thousand prints throughout the world, Lee Teter’s Reflections has become perhaps the most collected art print in the 20th century. Lee accepts no income from the prints. Sales amounting to millions of dollars continue to benefit veterans and their families. Thank you to those that paid the ultimate sacrafice, all Veterans, family members of the fallen, current Service Men & Women (& families), & friends of the same. "Freedom Is Not Free". I realize that this poem is most often read for Remembrance Day in Canada and Europe, but it applies to all memorial services IMHO. Written by John McCrae during his Active Duty service in France during WWI, this poem was published in 1919. It captures an essence of the need to remember our fallen and carry on fighting for what they, and we, believe is right. Freedom. In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Let our generation and those that come after us, hold the torch high and with pride and never break the faith. Cat

I just heard this song on TV, and I think it works just as appropriately as a poem. Seemed to fit the day. If tomorrow all the things were gone . . I'd worked for all my life, And I had to start again . . with just my children and my wife, I'd thank my lucky stars . . to be livin' here today. Cause the flag still stands for freedom . . And they can't take that away. And I'm proud to be an American Where at least I know I'm free And I won't forget the men who died Who gave that right to me And I gladly stand up . . next to you and defend her still today Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God bless the USA From the lakes of Minnesota ... To the hills of Tennessee ... Across the plains of Texas ... From sea to shining sea ... From Detroit down to Houston ... And New York to LA Well there's pride in every American heart And its time we stand and say.. That I'm proud to be an American Where at least I know I'm free And I won't forget the men who died Who gave that right to me And I gladly stand up . . next to you and defend her still today Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God bless the USA

Happy Memorial Day from one Vet to the rest. The fallen few will never be forgotten as long as we remember the cost that those men and women paid to give us that freedom. An oath was taken of free sprit and pride. A belief that our nation and other nations deserved the right of freedom has rung out over the years and still holds true today. Pride and honor were shown in the many pic and poems that were posted here and it makes me even prouder to be part of this loving family. Dave
