Can marijuana trigger CH?
« on: May 15th, 2003, 6:26pm »

Hi,Ive been daily weed smoker for 15+ years.Been dealing with CH for about 4 years. It seems every time I smoke weed I get a CH 1-2 hours later(sometimes immediately).I had thought it was beer(which I also do daily) but quit weed for 30 days and got NO headaches(well maybe a couple but not CH).I am having a difficult time accepting fact that weed could be "my" main trigger.Everything I read seems to point to marijuana "helps" headaches.I really dont want to quit smoking FOREVER!

You just answered your own question.

I have never heard of a single person here who has said refer helps a headache. Not a CH any way.

I've noticed that it helps me a tiny amount when I am *having* a headache, but it also seems to be a trigger for me, so I tend to smoke less.
I am sure that smoking in gerneral... weed or not is a trigger for me  Grin

I think it only helps people with migraines.  Tried it several times, never got any relief from my clusters and a couple of times it even caused a headache.

I thnk you've already gotten your answer.  Wink

I used to drive nails into my elbow every morning. Had arm pain daily.

I stopped driving nails into my elbow every morning for 30 days and my arm didn't hurt for 30 days.

Is driving nails into my elbow beneficial for treating arm pain?

I know,I know.... Im an idiot. Seriously though,Im feeling depressed about not being able to smoke my weed that has been part of my life for so long.Ive been on a lifestyle change mission for about 1.5 months now.I drink 6 pack/day,smoke 1 small joint/day,2 packs ultra light cigs/day for over 15 years now.Serious anxiety problems and CH started about 4 years ago.In my month of total abstinance I felt much better(so good I started drinking few beers and tried smoking weed again).Drinking beer alone had no h/a effect but right after smoking half joint I started getting one which I prevented by taking 2 excedrins and huffing some oxygen(havent had to use O2 in 3 weeks prior to my smoking).I am gonna get back to my very low alcohol intake/no weed kick as of right now.It just sucks but the headaches are what I cannot have anymore.BTW jonny, my foot DID hurt after slammin a hammer on it and DID NOT hurt when I didnt!   Tongue

Jonny's right dude,   Weed WILL trigger, or deffinitely won't help a CH.  On the other hand, i've experimented with weed for my Meegraines, and it seemed to help them and tension type headaches, but never a CH.

So for that reason i don't smoke weed for FEAR of it setting off a CH!

I agree Maggie. If I've been doing battle all night my head is usually so sore the next morning I can't touch it but after a couple of hits, it ain't so bad...herb has always been a part of my post h/a arsenal  Cool

As for your original post PatMan, I have never considered weed to be a trigger for me. If I did though, it would be a no brainer just like I have to quit alcohol when the beast comes around.

PatMan,

Some people have specific triggers, for sure.  And I suppose pot, any pot, could be a trigger for you.  That can't be ruled out.  But it's unlikely.  It's kind of like asking 'do blue colored pills make my pain go away'.  Their are literally endless varieties of cannabis (indica, sativa and hybrids) all with potentially wild differences in pharmacology.

I'm only telling you this because if you are continually smoking something that gives you a headache, of course that means you might want to stop.  But there may be alternatives that won't be a trigger for you.

Thanks to the board! even Tommy Lee,I mean jonny ;D  I too have been going around in circles trying to find thhe cause of these clusters for about 5 years.Unfortunately for me it happens to be something that I really enjoy.I have tried many types of weed(good, bad, very good, homegrown without chemicals) and occasionaly find one that does not trigger but the stuff changes frequently in my area.No tokin for me as of now.   The MJ is not the cause of your CH. Smoking it simply triggers a response from your physiology which initiates a chain of events which ultimately leads to a CH attack. I'm afraid that the conditions already exist and will continue to exist whether you smoke or not. You are fortunate if you only get attacked when you smoke. For many people REM sleep triggers the CH. There are many triggers, different for everyone. MJ is only a trigger, you were probably born with the cause.
Also, MJ is a vasodilator, and while the role of vasdilation in CH remains unclear, it is certain that there is the presence of abnormally dilated blood vessels during an attack.

Good luck,
-Curtis
