I'm newly diagnosed with CH after 20 yrs. So Im still working on understanding a pattern. When my eye/head hurts at night when Im asleep and it wakes me up the pain is about a 2-4 on the kip scale, This is nothing and Ive never thoght much of it. This happens about every night during my 3-4 week cycle but Im wondering if this could be the shadow you guys mention. I have pain between 8-10 (kip) during an attack for 1/2- 1 hr. Always between 6&9 pm. I cant believe Ive had this for so long and I need to ask questions like this, But maybe it will help me understand this more so I can get some kind of useful treatment (if there is any) Thank you Changed my name to avoid confusion. To me the shadow is knowing the SOB is ready to push my eye out of my head. It's like a low grade, 'I can deal with this" cluster. I think you are feeling a shadow. Only my opinion however. I may be wrong. If I am -- I'm ready. I have my flame retardant skiviees on..

| like echo said the lower kips are shadows but the shadow can move from a 2-4 to a 7-10 very quick. Quote:I have pain between 8-10 (kip) during an attack for 1/2- 1 hr. Always between 6&9 pm |
| magpie what meds did your neuro give you to try to stop the 8-10 kips.

How you define a shadow is subjective. Mine is that overall impending feeling of doom. My whole body feels ill and there is a nagging sensation in the area of my cranium that weathers the attack. Stiff neck, sore eye but not yet pain. Like rolling down the highway at 120 MPH with no brakes knowing you are about to appraoch a railroad crossing. A good decription of shadows can be found here; http://www.clusterheadaches.com/newvisitors.html

I'm with "echo". I get a low grade--more irritation than pain--for days before a full blown attack or the start of a cycle. That's what I define as a shadow.

Thanks for the feed back. I live in the middle of nowhere so I just see a GP doctor at a clinic. I ran across this site and diognosed myself, printed it off and took it to the doctor, He agreed it was CH, All my symptoms fit. Except the waking up with major hurt. I have been awaken but dont suffer much until evening, Then its BAD. I have just gone out of my annual APRIL attack and he gave me Caffergot & Imitrex, Not to be taken together but to see if either have any effect. I have tryed the caffergot but its hard to say, My eye still felt like it blew out, and It still is sore above the eye and my teeth. I have learned NOT to take asprin over and over again. It has no affect and gives me one continuos headache for weeks. On a bright note, My doc knows little about CH and is doing some major research. Including looking at this web site. Thanks again guys PEACE, Magpie

GDay, Im with Elaine, its hell waking up with a 10 without having time to mentally prepare for the onslaught to come. Again like the guys on top of me (lucky them or me not sure, bit of a sandwich really) shadows are generally on the lower end of the kip. Anyone else have the dillima of deciding of whether a particular onslaught is med required, deciding no, then wishing they had??? ???
