A Funny thing happened....

Not so much funny as, almost really sad.  I was at my chiropractor yesterday and he found this huge knot behind my shoulder blade, and as he was working it out, he said "you have got the pain threshhold of a horse" he sounded shocked, and then he said that most people would be screaming in pain just from the knot and even more from the treatment.  It really kind of blew me away.
And  I also recall that when I had my baby 10 years ago the nurses in the delivery ward remarked how quiet and calm I was during my labor.
I know that CHs are torture, and a test in sanity, but it never occurred to me that my threshhold of pain had been so increased that  even child birth was a breeze!!!
This was just a thought I had, and wanted to share with people who may have similar experiences and know what I'm talking about.

Almost 2 years ago, I shattered my heel (as well as breaking 3 toes, tearing 85% of the ligaments in foot/ankle, and stretching my achilles).   The friend that gave me a ride to ER and the first 2 nurses I saw almost  turned green when they saw how swollen my foot was.

"Next to cluster headaches, this is just a walk  hop in the park!"    Shoulda seen the looks on the nurses faces!   Shocked Shocked

Hi Aprilbee,

A couple of years ago I had some minor surgery on my hip late in the afternoon.  Early the next morning I was restless and took a walk around the hospital floor.  When I came back to my room there were two very shocked physical therapists.  They had come with a cane for me and were going to show me how to walk with it to help ease the terrible "pain" from the surgery!

I just laughed at them and asked if they had ever had a clusterheadache..............

These stories absolutely amaze me.  Shocked

I wish those doubters who have no clue about the pain we suffer would get on this site and read these stories, I want to hear their stories of "pain"  they don't have a clue what pain is!

Only bad thing about it is that when someone whines and complains about their "pain", I tend to not be very sympathetic....

At least if it is what I consider "insignificant"  There is pain that I consider "significant" though and that is usually extreme pain that is 24/7 for months....like burn victims, or people with Rheumatoid Arthritis or other conditions that have terrible unrelenting pain.  I know that I could not stay sane if these damn things lasted for days or weeks or months without a break.

Sherry,

That, of course, goes without saying.  I, in NO way, intended my remark to be unsympathetic to those who suffer everyday with constant agonizing pain.

Oh I know it Aprilbee!  I was just saying that I tend to be unsympathetic... but I sometimes think about burn victims and stuff like that and think....wow, don't know if I could deal....

No offense intended toward anyone.  I think our pain is pretty unique in that there is so little that helps it and since it is right there in our head it is more intense than other pain.

I agree with you!

You two sound like me.  A couple of hours after my C-section I got out of bed to use the bathroom.  The nurse was ready to kill me.  To me it was nothing, the pain was nothing.  It's amazing, isn't it, the level of pain we can take.

I had one or two cycles before I happened to have jaw surgery.  During the surgery my jaw was completley detatched from my face, bone was removed and everything was screwed back into place.

When I woke up I tried the morphine for the "pain", but after a coupel of tries I said screw it because i wasn't hurting that much and the morphine made me ill.  I barely touched any of the codiene that they sent me home with (well I did eventually use it all up  Wink )   Everyone was shocked that I just toughed it out... with the exception of not being able to solid food for weeks and being wired shut... I'd take that "pain" any day over a CH.

Stevegeebee, as a fellow Cubs fan I "share your pain."

Several years ago during the third inning of a baseball game I had a foul tip hit the end of my mitt and break my little finger.  The bone stuck out at about a fortyfive degree angle.  I put the bone back in place and taped it to my third finger, put the mitt back on and finished the game.  Our other catcher was out with a pulled muscle.

Sherry, I have to agree with you.  I tend to be rather unsympathetic with my kids sometimes and have to remember who they are.  Neither would I like to trade places with someone in a burn ward or a cancer ward.  I  at least know it won't kill me or leave a permanent scar.

PFDANs to all,

Do you know that my husband Dave has 2 fractures in his back that have never been addressed from a motorcycle accident.  He has been living with that pain for the past 20 or so years... He also has recently been diagnosed with a condition that causes tumors to his body its called Fibromatosis... He has a tumor on his knee and recently had one removed  went golfing the next day. They found a torn cartiledge at the same time  and the doc said "doesnt that bother you???" He never complains about the dibilitating arthritis that he has in his hands... I do believe you are probably right that CHers have high pain thresholds. He is proof positive of that.  Ree

Similar thing(s) have happened to me.  I have argued long and arduously bout the differences in how we each reacrt to ch and how it NEED NOT diminish the horror we EACH face....

I had TWO SEVERE CAR CRASHES (hence the nikname CRASH...)  involving multiple fractures (phemor, hip, arms.......broken wrist, hand, nose, etc...........)

I had THREE emergency C-sects.............( Shocked) lol - yep.......

PLUS, I was raised in a LARGE family that said NEVER show em yur sweat...............so clusters came on and I was "EMBARASSED" to show my pain.............and hence "I DID NOT SHOW THAT PAIN!!!!".....this is hard for people with clusters to believe........but for me -- I had no choice really.  My family raised us to think "If yur not bleedin/and or outright  on death's door - then SFU.
So, when I would go to the doc, I'd actually feel EMBARRASSED about talking bout the clusters..............

That's why we need to really listen to kids who come here talking bout there head pain.  Sumtimes ya gotta weed out the cobwebs and really LISTEN to what folks are talking bout, udderwise ya miss it.............

Interesting tales. The worst pain I've experienced outside of CH was post-surgical gall bladder removal and kidney stones. I went back to work 3 weeks after the surgery, and a single Tylenol T3 was enough to dampen the pain of the kidney stones. Co-workers were amazed, but hey, it was nothing.

My wife works with post-surgical patients daily, and spends a large part of her time with pain management. She has noted a large variation in responses to pain, and is acustom to the various means of controlling both the pain and the responses to the pain.  So far, she has been frustrated with trying to help me control my CH pain. I'm fortunate to have her experience available, tho at the height of an attack all she can do is sit by. At least she doesn't go in to a panic!

Maybe someday someone will invent an object way measuring pain, and CH'ers can show off their high numbers Roll Eyes
