New To Your MB

Hello, I'm in my 2nd or 3rd episode. This one is in it's 3rd week - longest of them to date. My regular doc, not a neurologist, diagnosed me. I have all the classic symptoms. Some of my attatcks last longer than 2 hours. I'm not taking a preventative. Plan to ask my doc about Verap next time I see her - in June. That's if I can make it that long. I'm taking Neurontin 1-200mg at bedtime, Imitrex tabs, and Fioricet. I'm 34, married, and substitute teach. I've had high pain levels before, but nothing like this. I've been researching the archives when the pain levels allow, but I'm still largely uninformed. Any advice is welcome! PFDAN's to All, Kate

Welcome Kate, If you have CH there are a lot of home pain management techniques here. Bag of frozen peas for your neck and noggin. Vigirous exercise will sometimes abort. Dramamine as a sleep aid Have you tried O2 as an abortive? JOIN OUCH !

Don, Thanks for your advice and the Welcome! I've been using ice packs (had them from a sprained ankle) and they help a great deal. I'll try using my exercise bike - I can't sit still when one hits. I haven't tried O2 yet...wondering what my wonderful insurance (gag) will say. It's worth a shot! I've done some reading on the OUCH site. Time for me to join. I'm getting there. Wishing you PFDAN's Kate

Hey Jacks, Thanks for the welcome to your family. This seems like a great group of people. I've learned more from reading posts and archives than I've found in any books. Hope you have PFDAN's Kate

Welcome aboard Kate, Glad you found us, and I hope you will be able to find something to help. Ice makes it worse for me. I somethimes will try a hot shower, as hot as I can stand it right on the back of my neck. I use the pulse setting on the shower head. If I can get there early somethimes it helps. You said you are married, but you didn't mention whether or not you have kids. I learned the LaMaze method of childbirth with our kids and use the focus and relaxation techniques also. It doesn't stop them, but it does help to deal with the pain if you can keep your concentration. Hope it breaks soon. jc

Welcome Kate... we are glad you found us... sorry you are suffering so badly right now jc above has some great advise for pain management... I quite frankly havent ever heard anyone that used lamase for CH pain but why not... Charlie has a great method also... he will probably post it too... Talk to your doc about uping your Neurontin that is what my hubby is on and the stuff worked miracles for him. He takes it 3 times a day. He is also on clonazepam for sleep. good luck and if you need us give a shout. Prayers going out to you Ree

Hi Kate, Sorry you're going through such a rough time, but this is the place to be. Welcome! Definitely speak to your doc about preventatives and be careful of the fioricet, it can be nasty stuff if you take it too often. Hope you're feeling better soon! Joanie

Welcome Kate, You have stumbled upon the best site and group to help you get through this wicked nightmare called cluster. Best advice is get to your doctor early and often. Get as many meds as you can before your next cycle. ( I'm learning the hard way) Best wishes and may the beast go back to sleep so you can, Mack
