Chief of Police - Kick in the butt

Hi Ya'll Last week was busy! Last Saturday, I revieved a phone call while conducting a line-up with the guys (and gal) assigned to my watch. I was told about what had happened to Jill's dad and it was my job to go home and tell Jill. Since I work the third watch, there was nobody to tell about this except for a sgt on the 2nd watch as he was getting off work. This sgt agreed to work overtime and cover my shift. I also sent an e-mail to the Admin. sgt and left a voice-mail with the Assistant Chief requesting a 5-day emergency leave. Four (4) hours after I recieved the phone call about Jill's dad, Jill and I was on a plane for MD. I could not let Jill fly alone - medication and emotional state of mind. I arrived at the Ferrante home and it was a great experience meeting Barbara, Jill's Grandmother and family friends like Cindy and Linda. MD is a beautiful place and I felt very much "at home". I did have problems with my cell phone since it was almost impossible to call out. I did manage to talk to my partner at work and he told me that the Assistant Chief was taking care of my emergency leave request and that made me feel good. The following day, I spoke to my partner again and he told me that the Chief would not accept my request since it did not have my signature on it and it was not written on a special form that is usually used - therefore, the request was officially never recieved and I was considered to have abandonded my job. As you most likely wonder, is there more to this..? Yes, of course; The Chief started working for our Department a year ago, after being "forced" out as the Chief of Police in Cook County Illinois. Since he started he has implemented the policy: "If you are not 100% agreeing with me - you are against me". Well, the Assistant Chief, two Sgt's and myself, have questioned some of his " policy changes" and have been placed on his "against me" list. Right or wrong, when I arrived in San Diego yesterday, my partner picked Jill and I up at the airport and I was told by my partner that I would most likely be demoted or fired. I have been with this Department for 12 years, I have built the evidence Department, written software that is used by the Department, been decorated and commended for dangerous arrests, given life safer awards and only once been written up for Internal Affairs (for missing a supervisor meeting), etc, etc.. But I will NOT lick somebody's butt, I will NOT abandon my principles regarding officer safety and I will NOT continue to work in a hostile environment. I talked to my union rep this morning and of course we can fight this - but I wont. I will put in for my resignation and at the same time send a letter explaining this resignation to the City Board of Supervisors. My plan of action may change depending on another meetin with the union rep later today. I may let him fire me instead and then file a claim against the Dept. We'll see. Sorry for posting this here since it really does not have anything to do with clusters, but I got to let it out somewhere.. Jill is not out of the woods yet and Barbara need help with the farm. Jill also need to be with her mom so within a week or so, depending on Jill's MRA and when we can have it done, we will load the truck and drive to MD. I did check into State Corrections in MD and there is a chance that I will be hired on by them. There is always a reason why things happen in our life. I see it as a new beginning with exiting possibilities. Marty

Marty...Think about this. Why let this ignorant @#%@ win. Let the chief do what he's gonna do and see him in court. At the very least, you will get your message across a lot louder then through a letter. I'm real sorry for the hell you, Jill, and her family have been going through. But just remember we're all behind you, whatever you decide to do. Good Luck Jim

Marty, I'm really sorry for the situation you find yourself in, especially since this was none of your doing. I do agree with the other's above; things usually happen for a reason, whether we like what's happening to us at the time or not. Things usually do work out for the better. Stand by your principles and fight this. This may be happening just so his ass can get booted out by you. If you fight this, it sounds like you would be instrumental in helping everyone on the force. Good luck, and keep us posted, Tracey

Marty, You are a smart man, and I'm sure you'll do what's right. Cops have better ability than most to step back and absorb a set of circumstances, helping them make the wise decision. (well, some of them do ). I hope you apply this same ability to your personal situation. Sometimes, it's silly to fight to stay in a situation where you know the cards are stacked against you, but other times it might be worth waiting around until someone shuffles the deck for you. -Fu

Marty, what happened BITES ...........and I bet I know how it felt (or feels) to deal with that kind of human stupidity......it's all around us.... --------however,........when I read your post, I got such a feeling of optimism and arms got all tingly. Every thing does happen for a reason. Sometimes an ugly thing happens........only to serve as a catylist for something wonderful beyond our wildest dreams.........it is in that vein that I not judge what has passed, but rather urge you on to happier times in life -- for Marty -- I KNOW something really GOOD awaits you. I said it b4 and I'll say it again - I feel it in my BONES! --jonny and don -- sometimes we must choose - to fight (maybe we'll win, maybe we'll lose.....) or to LET GO! It's up to us as individuals to make that choice. Weigh it all out. Discover for yourself what is actually the victory Thanks Marty. You shine.

Marty So sorry we don't know each other, and so sorry this has happened. Please don't make a rushed decision on this, this a way of life and career you are proposing to leave. I am sure you will make the right decision when the dust settles. I have no idea (sorry folks here- none of you do!) what is the right thing to do, only you know that, but for what it's worth- there is life after Policework. I was a Police Officer, I thought as a career for life. It wasn't and the shit got too much. I left and never regretted it for a moment. I had a very happy second career in HR. I also will never regret for a moment having been a Policewoman either, I hated it but learned a huge amount about myself and other people. I hope this all works out for you and Jill, but I also hope you don't 'burn your boats' in anger. Good luck W the B the ex Police Officer.

Marty, I am absolutely flabbergasted!!! …………..You’re a Cop?? Uhhh…..First, I’d like to say that all the all the references I have made about smoking a bong, were concerning the traditional “Hooookahhh” used for tobacco!! And…. “The Man in Blue is a Friend to You”!!! ……And, by the way, the address I gave you is wrong, I have recently moved to Guam. Dudester, There is no shame in playing the game, the way they force you to play. You are fighting for more than just yourself, now. Fuckem. All’s fair in love and war. If you have not kept a journal, with times and dates, of their fuckups, try to recreate one now, it goes a long way to supporting your case. The journal, is not, of course, hard evidence by any means (so, you can approximate) , but it shows their state of mind, and their repetitive actions. Copy all your evidence to CD, before the ax falls and access is denied. IMHO, don’t resign (if possible). Make them be the instigators. “Rope-a-Dope” baby, “Rope-a-Dope”. From Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” to Mohammed Ali, it is a proven passive/aggressive technique, that works. Use the Union’s resources to their full extent! That’s what we have been paying for, all these years. Document, document, document!! David J.

Marty, I may join the unemployment line with you tomorrow. Two weeks ago at work, I clicked one of the the mapped drives in "My Computer"... and found a goldmine! Which included lists of all 3,000 employees where I work, salary, performance review ratings... lists of employees on medical leave (and why)... medical and dental insurance records, etc. I mentioned it to my boss who seemed indifferent and suggested I ought to just forget it. Friday, I checked to see if it was still there on the network, and it was. I thought dammit, this isn't right... it is accessible to every employee there (we have 120,000 employees worldwide). So I notified the Director of Human Resources. I thought for a week beforehand that somebody's head is going to roll... since IT and Security are both responsible for network security (and they work for HR)... but the stuff I saw was put there by HR and should not be there. I'm hoping what I saw will simply disappear from the network before I go in to work tomorrow and that will be the end of it. I am also thinking that somebody in IT or HR is going to lose their job, and HR may try to hang the messenger as well. ???

Unfortunately, my "positon could be eliminated", or I could be terminated because of a bad performance review (making sure the next one is bad), or they could claim that I was "hacking" their network. Hopefully none of those things will happen. But if it does, I have fought clusters for 14 years, I can fight them too.

Marty, Glad you shared this with us. This is a cluster matter! Anything that involves a clusterhead involves the family. You have enough on your plate right now without having to deal with a Cook Co. reject. Hope you are able to resolve the situation properly and that it is him that loses the job rather than you. WE DON'T WANT HIM BACK!!! You guys on the sharp end of the stick are more valuable than that. Unfortunatly even in the PD the Peter Principle still applies and ____ floats. Be assured that you are in our prayers along with Jill and Barbara. jc

Ya never get a break. It sucks and makes about as much sense as wooden watch. (actually, there is one in England....I kid you not. Gotta love them) What gets me about this shit is that with life being so short and a constant battle, why do people waste so much time being such rectal apertures? Dumbth. I suspect the union will help you do the right thing. I agree with with the others and I think you'll do okay if you allow yourself some time so you can make good decisions. Good luck to you both. Wow.. This sure took off like a rocket.. I was talking to a lot of people yesterday and I came to understand that there is an investigation that has opened up on the Chief.. ;D Appearantly, the SDTE (union) are going to the media (this will be good) and it is supposed to become public this week. This is not regarding my situation but it relates by dealing with other officers having been "rail-roaded" and disciplined for speaking up and questioning new policies. I have been adviced to do the following: 1. Submitt my resignation based on a "hostile work environment" where I see no other way out but to resign. 2. Include the fact that I feel forced to submitt this resignation and thereafter, file a claim - using the up-coming media coverage to show similar cases directly related to the actions of the Chief. There are other things to be included but the above is the main thread. A copy of this resignation will be sent to the Board of Supervisors, H&R and the union with an official reqeust that an internal investigation of the Chief be conducted to avoid further incidents like this one. Thanks for being there for me - I may sound a bit like i am whining, but damn it, I am pissed off. On another subject and just to clear the air; It has come to my attention that some are worried about Jill and refering to her being with me, as an "un-healthy" relation ship.. So, let's recap: When I first offered Jill to come to CA, it was when she was going through a very rough time. Most of you remember what went on and how some of us took action during that period of time before she came out here. Many were worried and it is still my belief that Jill came pretty close to the edge. Except for the initial "internet" contacts (and that includes all of us that became involved on the message board), nothing was done without Jill's parents being involved. Ralph was here and we had a great time - he was a very good man. As to what kind of realtion ship Jill and I have - I can type until my fingers fall off and still not be able to convince some that we do not have an intimate relation ship that sometimes is being refered to. We have a very close relation ship in personal matters but in no way, shape or form, am I taking advantage of Jill. As to the move.. Being from a cold and snowy Country (Sweden), I have for some time considered moving to a part of the US that have the four seasons. There is one message board member that can attest to that since she is a Realtor and I have asked her to look for suitable properties (country with an out-house ;D). Without going into details, I was asked to "pick" MD instead of this "other State". So, why did I write all this here? When I first came to this board last year, I had cycled out. I stayed on the MB since the people here are special in a certain way; we all share a pain that we hide from others - non-clusterheads. Sometimes we fight and argue, sometimes we laugh together after one of us have screwed up in one way or another and sometimes, we care so much that there are no limits as to what we will do for each other. I am not looking for approval, nor am I looking for support for my actions - I am looking for advice like I would from my own family, be it supportive or negative.. I value and treasure each one of you - you are truly a diverse and great bunch of people - you are my family Marty
