I like that one to Elaine but I'm pushing for something not as simplistic as that. Based on Franks previous post on the board pissing him off.

A "newbie" as I referred to in my earlier thread is someone who is new to this message board. Someone who has just found this message board and comes here seeking our SUPPORT and UNDERSTANDING. Someone who hasn't been here long enough to know there is such a thing as the "archives"...  who may also not yet know about all of those wonderful "buttons on the left". A person who has only posted 1 to 10 times who may not want to stay around if he/she is flamed for asking seeming stupid questions.

I sense the reason why you started this thread. So... if you think that what I said in my earlier thread  is completely full of shit.... just say so... and explain why you feel that way.

It really depends on the person, Don.  Some folks show up here and a lot of us can just "tell" if they have been genuinely battling the beast for a long time, by how they present themselves.  They're not newbies.  They're the brother we never knew we had that's finally come home.  They were never newbies.
Then we get the people that sound like they've been misdiagnosed and are lost (maybe not believing their diagnosis either), but still trying to find a box to put their pain in.  They're not newbies either - they're just lost.
Then there are the wannabes - they are folks who fit neither category but have an urgent need to belong to a social group (for ANY reason).  Why anyone would WANT to say they qualify to be a cluster peep is beyond me, but...it's a lonely old world out there.
Newbies?  I dunno either now.  Maybe it's the ones who also dive into water without checking depth first - meaning the ones who arrive here and start snapping orders and spouting rules (that actually hasn't happened for a long time.

Oh, I KNOW - Waterdog.  he will ALWAYS be a newbie.

so, in other words - I don't have anything of value to contribute here LOL  i'll just be shutting up now.

I'd say a newbie is someone new to the MB.
Seems like most people posting for the first time have either recently been diagnosed or have or have known what they have but didn't know about this website.
When they do post for the first time they usually say they have had these for x amount of years.
You very rarely see anyone who's just started getting hit find their way in here. Most people already know about the beast, they just haven't been formally introduced yet.
When it first started happening to me I was like WTF was that! I had no idea there was a name for it other than WOWTHISFUCKIN'HURTSBIGTIME!!!
so even though we weren't down with the i-net back then I wouldn't have known what to look for anyway.

I never said I have the answer. It was a thought provoking question and I'm still thinking about it.

So far I have come up with this;

A newbie is someone who finds us. They are in a state of emotional and mental crises. They may have suffered for 1 year or 40. Time is not a common denominator. The common denominators that would have someone search us out are fear and isolation. Not the fear of having CH, the fear of not knowing why. The fear of being a sole victim and completely alone in an unexplained misery. The pain of the CH has penetrated the physical and has saturated the "newbies"spirit. The "newbie" has been made to feel physically, mentally and emotionally feeble and susceptable. It is a sense of sheer terror that drives someone to search us out.

P.S.  Dunno about this board... But in iNet terms... A newbie is someone who just don't get it... Whether it's your first time around, or you're an old grampa on the block... If ya don't get it... You's a newbie.  And I never get any... Sad

Good definition. But if time is not a common denominator... Would that mean that a person who has suffered CH attacks for years, who knows as much about CH and it's treatments as anyone who has been here forever, and has been doing all of the right things to treat his/her CH... but ends up here anyway... is not a "newbie"?

So.....it would seem that quite often the term simply doesn't apply here.  Is the term simply antiquated?  I can accept that....

I most certainly recall the tears (literally) when I found this place - as a Newbie...... ;D

Damned if I know.  I've been in and out of this board since 1998 and I'm still listed as a newbie.
