Do you remember your very first serious CH attack?

For a clusterhead the first CH attack as remarkable as the first kiss My story in a nutshell: In August 1982 I was after my state examinations. It was time for do nothing after a hard and stressfull period - and I had HAs from day to day. According to my doc it was "chronic HA" and took me some pills.

I was 20, living in an apartment with my girlfriend. I woke up from a nap with a very severe and new kind of headache. She said that it sounds like a migraine. It probably got to about kip 7. I tried laying in a tub full of hot water with most of my head submerged. It went away after about an hour. I had no idea what I was in for. -Curtis

April 1986, late afternoon. I was officiating an Under 16 boys soccer game. Headache hit about twenty minutes before the end of the second half. Could not finish; AR took over for last 12 minutes. I could not replace him on the line. So much for running it out. Drove home after the match, but I cannot tell you how I did so.

January 1982 at college - Just got up and left in the middle of a class without saying anything, thinking my head was going to explode. Not sure if I was having a nap at the time. (one of the FEW things that I actually remember from college ) grant

Nope. Me neither. Decades ago. It's like looking out the window of a speeding train. Flashes of a bunch of times lumped all together. Attacks at different times and places - it's clear picture in my mind with not specific sequence.

Me either -- way too long ago. Just remember it hurt like hell and couldn't figure out why. Got drunk or stoned and partied on. ;D

1969 watching Jonny Carson while staying with my girlfriend. Got up from the chair convinced I was having a stroke or done for. Lots of pacing. They have always been same. Fast and always about the same horrible intensity. They've been gone for exactly 12 years. Charlie

Funny you should ask, I was just trying to remember that the other day. I remember having terrible "sinus" headaches when I was 12 or 13. Doc gave me NOVAHISTINE as I remember. It was the beginning of a couple of decades of mis-diagnosis. I don't think CH was even invented then. I will be 42 this year. At least it has a name now! PFDAN's Mark

Yes I will never forget it! I was married to my first husband. I woke up screaming in pain. I was so scard cause I had had bad headaches before but nothing like this. My ex was not the kind of man you wake up in the middle of the night. He got so mad at me he slaped me. I remember taking the kids and putting them in the car and trying to drive to my moms house. Its was the lonest drive. I remember telling mom take the kids I think something is bad wrong with me. Once the kids were save I sat in the yard of my MOMS ROCKING AND SCREAMING. That cluster lasted over three hours. . I went though all kinds of test for weeks and all kinds of treatments for years, before I found out what they were. By the way I divorced the SOB I was married to at the time!

I don't remember exactly on what day or where I was, but my attacks started in May 1989. I have long thought it might have coincided with my discontinuance of being a cocaine junkie a couple of weeks earlier (because Lidocaine up the nose is an effective cluster treatment). Maybe my nose was so numb during the previous seven years... I could have had clusters and not even known it.

The earliest one I can remember: I was in school, and got a horrible pain in my eye. Teacher had someone walk me to the principal's office, where I spent the next 2 hours in pain, only to have the principal come up to me after it was over and say I looked okay to him... He was a damn jackass, but not just because of this. PFDAN............................... Drk^Angel

Sure. I was trying to watch the first moon landing and didn't understand what was happening. With my head, not with the astronauts. I had worked on the Apollo program so I was damned if I wasn't going to watch, no matter what. So I did it through a haze of alcohol and pain and finally fell asleep about one in morning, exhausted of course.

Like it was yesterday. My first real 10, my first indication that something was simply not right... I was water skiing, having a great time. We were had joined up with some other skiing buddies on the water who had a large cabin cruiser, so we basically sat in the big boy drinking beer and tequila shots (I was recently 21) not feeling too bad, and my turn came up to take a few laps. I got in the water, got up easily like normal, had some great cuts and high speed jumps over the wake, when BAM... my head exploded. I was paralyzed with pain, went down instantly. My friends had rarely seen me go down like that, especially when I wasn't doing anything at all at the time (it was 1 second after completing a very hard cut and pull, hard work). So, there I sat in the water, face down, unable to move or do anything. I was able to hold my breath until the boat came back and I was dragged from the water. I couldn't even talk yet, so everybody was confused. I spent the rest of the day in the cabin wishing I had a way to knock myself out. I think my friends figured it was alcohol, but I knew it was something else. It took a long time to be diagnosed with clusters. -Fu

???I think my first attack was in May of 1989. It was the night before my brothers wedding. I recall getting up the night before in pain waking my husband. Telling him my right eye felt like it was going to blow right out of my head, the pain was horrible. The next day (the day of the wedding) I felt like shit all day, so I went to the doctor's and he said I had a sinus infection and prescribed anibiotics and i went on my way and for the next 11 years I was treated for sinus infections every spring. I would have to say my first 10 (though I didn't know it at the time) was January 1, 2003. Hell of a way to bring in the new year. Was driving the car with my husband in next to me and the kids in the back. Was just grateful I could pull over.

I remember the first one, but sorta vaguely. It was '72 or'73. I remember I was laying on my bed, don't know if I had been sleeping or not, and what felt like a cramp in my head started and got worse and worse and worse! I remember thinking after it went away, that God was punishing me for something and I didn't tell my parents. (Back then, I was Catholic) Once I realized that there wasn't anything I could think of that I should be punished for, I discarded that thought. Sherry
