Questions for the Message Board veterans
« on: May 1st, 2003, 12:56pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

A few questions about the history of this board.
1. Is there a certain time of year when activity on the board is unusually high or unusually low?

2. Is there a time of year when the influx of first-time posters is particularly high?

3. What percentage of people create a username, post a few times, and leave, never to return?

4. This board serves a number of valuable purposes. Can it be said that there is a main purpose which is the most important? If so, what is it?

#1 and #2 I cannot address -- I have never put together any type of a matrix to track this type of activity.

#3 - my opinion is that the number  of people who create a name, post a few times and disappear is quite high.

#4 - for me the MB gives me a media to communicate my frustrations with CH, and hopefully provide some type of support for others.

I am not qualified to answer 1, 2 or 4. But, if one goes to the Member listing, one is struck immediately by the number of names with few or no posts.

There ought to be a way to dump that information into a file and sort it appropriately, but I am expert in programming languages that   are seldom used on websites.

Also, the member's registration date, if available, would provide information about patterns of enrollment.

1/ Christmas is usually busy .....summer we're on holiday...

2/ Maybe given that ch is seasonal there is an influx of newbies around those times...

3/ A percentage which is too high....

4/ Leaving messages on the message board....

Don what does it mean....
3916 have registered
2294 have nothing to say
1228 didn't have ch after all
283 have a bit to say

Actually, the statistics are quite interesting minus the jock humor.

How did this site attract so many "members" who do not post? Were they cluster people who expected some kind of epiphany for signing up? Did they sign up and were intimidated by what is posted here? Were they people who will sign up for anything thinking that they will gain access to "secret" information?

Beats the hell out of me! I signed up because I found some folks who actually understand. My wife respects my headaches, but there is no way she can empathize. But then, I cannot empathize with her RA.

Given that we represent .1% of the population, how many people should have signed up for real?

Frank, great stats. If you can do AS/400, I will sign you up.

I know what a AS/400 is, but I can't program it. I'm just a digital electronics hardware design engineer.

BTW... the numbers I posted earlier are accurate (they came from the member list). I could get member signup dates from the same spreadsheet and relate that to the number of posts, but I don't see any correlation exists there anyway. I would have to hit DJ's website 3,916 times to extract the data and I suspect he wouldn't like being hit that many times in one day from one computer.

It means that prolly about 2000 or so online pharmacies, penis enlargement sites, porn sites, dope dealers, and the like have signed up to get access to the member list to spam us into oblivion...  Or people who signed up and forgot their password, so signed up again, and again, and again...

Hard questions but I think the major purpose of the board is that by finding they are not alone, many pieces of furniture, pets and even relatives have been spared considerable damage from desperate clusterheads.
