The 10's are back!! UGH!
« on: Apr 28th, 2003, 12:22pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Ok, I admit it!  I'm feeling sorry for myself.  I think I've jinxed myself or something.  Over the last few weeks I've been posting about how even though I am chronic, I haven't had a 10 in a few months and I felt it was because of the water therapy.

Well, last week they came back.  You would think after 18 years of this BS, I would just learn to roll  with the punches (I wish I could be as strong as you Jonny) but that's just not always the case.   Over the past few months the worst I've had has been around a 7 but mostly 5's.  Then out of the blue (isn't that always the way?) the 10's started hitting last Wednesday.  And still after 18 years I find myself questioning everything I had been doing ...."what did I eat different that day?", "did I drink something different?"..."was it because i've been eating too much chocolate latey??" .   I know there's no answers to these questions, yet I still find myself asking them.  FRUSTRATING!

So I have a couple of questions about meds.  I do not have insurance so I have not been to the DR in almost 2 years and have no prescription meds.  Only been taking Motrin & Aleve in massive quantities every day for a couple of years (I'm sure I have no liver left).  So I'm having lunch with a friend of mine today who takes maxalt for her migraines and she said she'll give me some pills.  Is this a preventative or an abortive?  Should I try one as soon as she gives it to me or wait till I get hit?

I also have an opportunity to get some Immitrex nasal sprays from a fellow clusterhead....should I or should I not take this in conjunction with the maxalt?

Sorry for the long-winded message...Keep me in your prayers.  I feel a lot of pressure not to miss any work because I don't get paid for it because I'm working as a temp.. but the lack of sleep alone is just making me a walking zombie.   Cry

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me on the meds.

I would like to talk to you, but I know nothing about the medications in question, much less their interaction.

As another eighteen year veteran, my episodes are semi-controlled using Eskalith and Calan. But, I empathize about the 10s. I get them at night as well.

I would have written sooner, but I just woke up from a nap here at work.

9erfan,

Maxalt is an abortive and no, you shoudn't use Maxalt with Imitrex.  You may want to get started on Verapamil and Prednisone as they are not very expense

You dont have to be, you only need to be as strong as YOU need to be.

I wouldn't fuck with the maxalt without a doctors supervision. Read down to the "wiggin out" post.

So that eliminates the worry of combining the two drugs.

I will advocate for not using a drug but will not advocate for using one without a docs supervision. Any one on this board that takes that step better have a big fat ass diploma on their wall that says they can prescribe. If they dont, they shouldn't.

The imitrex is your decision.

Hi Don- FYI, 9erfan is a girl... Shocked

I've tried Verapamil back in the early years and it didn't do anything for me...as far as Prednisone goes...NO WAY!  I hate that stuff.  The side effects from the Pred were a nightmare for me and I refuse to go on it again.

OK, you guys have got me thinking twice about trying the Maxalt.  I did try the Immitrex nasal spray a few months with mixed results...worked for me a couple of times, didn't work another couple of times.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Virginia

Virginia, I'm so sorry the 10's are back.  I really hate to hear that.

Can you get 02 some way?  I would use that instead of the meds, unless you get a Dr's check-up first.  The welding 02 isn't that expensive, and it does work.

Try dramamine at night.  It should at least give you a night or two of rest.

Thinking of you,
Tracey

Thanks for the good thoughts you guys!

I can just go to a welding shop and ask for O2?  I think I may still have a mask from a long time ago...I may not though..not sure..

I'll pick up some dramamine on my way home.  Thanks Tracey.

Virginia.....I forgot..... Roll Eyes

When I take the dramamine, I always take 2.  Just 1 tablet doesn't seem to keep mine at bay.  You might try it first with just one, then maybe you won't feel so groggy in the morning.

Good luck     Smiley

Hi Virginia,

Sorry to hear about the tens, and as for the trex, its big $$$$$$$, and most insurance company's only let you get 2 boxes of spray I believe. I think if you do the 02 and get through this cycle with that, and a preventative that helps, maybe at least they'll die down a bit.
