i was wondering anyone might be able to give me some info about cluster headaches in women.i was 30 years old at the time of my first attack.it seems that i have all the symptoms...one or two month episodes with six months or more episode free,  sudden excruciating pain on the right side of my face and temple, occasionally i'm woken from a deep sleep by relentless head pain, more often it happens around 5pm, stabbing/ burning sensations not only in my eye and temple but inside my mouth, teeth and right ear as well. however the duration is closer to 6-10  hrs. and i have extreme sensitivity to noise and, light like a migraine. in fact one doctor diagnosed my headaches as migraines. i have had some results with imatrex injections( though i've always required a second injection) and to a much lesser degree with oral migraine medications. mostly they've done little or nothing to ease the pain. very occasionally, i have naseau, and once, vomiting (it was a really, really bad one) i understand that some women exhibit symtoms of both cluster and migraine headaches. does anyone know anything about this? is it REALLY possible to have both types??!!!!

Hey Don, could you repeat that to my face while I'm in the middle of one?   ;D
Lisa, Yes there is a few here who suffer from both. Hopefully they will pop up to help you out.
Good luck to you,
Suzy

Go to archives for 11/1/01; look for message, "cluster resources--#16", and scroll down to medical journal articles. Couple listed there for women. You can obtain a full copy by taking this citation to your library.

I get both clusters and migraine. It is rather easier for me though as my clusters and migraines are fundamentally different and each has the 'classic' characteristics. e.g. never light sensitive or vomit with CH, do with migraine.Must lie still, dark and quiet for migraine, pace and bang with CH. The pain is in an entirely different league.

It sounds to me that the advice given is right to read up, there are lots of variations of 'headaches' and some syndromes mimic some of the symptoms of CH.
Have you actually had a diagnosis of CH from a neuro as some of your symptoms are what the docs would call 'atypical'., i.e  they are not classic Ch symptoms (long duration, light, vomiting etc do not usually occur with CH)
