I just found this site today and thought I'd share a few thoughts. I have had cluster headaches sporadically since i was in my early 20's. At first i didn't know what they were and my Doctor at the time said he'd never heard of such a thing (late 70's). After several years I happened once to read an article about heachaches and discovered the name of what i had. About two years ago I mentioned the headaches to my brother and found out he has had them too all these years! After reading some of the info on this site i realize mine are not nearly as bad as some people's. I have just started getting them again a few days ago - the last time was 4 years ago. I get them exactly 45 minutes after falling asleep and they wake me up. In the past i have had different experiences - for awhile I got them anytime during day/night and especially if I drank alcohol. The last couple of times only when I fall asleep. I have found in the past that (when they came when I was still awake) I get a five minute warning and if I take aspirin right away the headaches don;t get too bad if there is any pain at all. In fact the severity of the headaches is less the last few years, and they only last about 20 minutes. Afterwards I get this strange euphoric peaceful feeling - very nice but not worth the pain of the headaches! Other than the cluster headaches, i NEVER get a headache any time. And other than my brother I have never met anyone that gets this type of headache or even has heard of it. My condolences for those who have suffered much more than me. I do remember some severe ones, though - when water would literally squirt out of my left eye and it felt like daggers being plunged into my head. But I always knew they would only last for a half hour or so and I frankly didn't have too much of a problem handling it for so short a period. I would be interested if anyone tries the aspiring thing - you never know and it certainly worked for me.

Back in the day when i was recieving mis diagnosis after mis diagnosis. I would take apirin. The catch was I would have to take handfulls of them. Three times in the ER for aspirin toxicity. Burning wonderful little holes in my stomach. Quite frankly I have never heard of aspirin even touching the pain of Clusters. Everything you describe says Cluster except for the aspirin being affective.

yea, ya sound like me alittle. I do find if i take 3 advil it takes the intensity away. Sometimes. But my headaches last about 1-3 hours long. So if i wake up with the attack i usually cant get rid of it. BUt if its during the day i can minimize it with 3 advil and sometimes a maxalt. catherine/teddy

Welcome aboard and your description of the euphoria afterwards is right on the money for me. Aspirin had zero effect and by the time it took hold, they usually subsided anyway. Like Don, I never hearf of it touching a cluster. Keep up the good fight though. Charlie
