So, I posted here last year. I believe it was June or July...
I was doing research for my father who had just had his first run in with cluster headaches. He was 53 and in *amazing* shape so it came as quite a shock. He was in New Orleans on vacation (we're Canadian)...the coroner in New Orleans stated his death as Coronary Heart Disease which fits in well with him having high blood pressure his whole life despite playing professional tennis, eating well and staying fairly stress free.
When I look up symptoms of heart anyeurisms, one of them is severe headaches and throbbing behind one eye. When I read it, it immediately reminded me of his cluster headaches. As I stated when I posted last year, he was a typical 50-something man who hated going to the doctor and his worst fear was having to take pills his whole life or be terminally sick...my point being, if he was having the headaches again recently, he was probably hiding it from me for fear of worrying me.
I'm so saddened by this, you guys. I know that knowing if he was having the cluster headaches again, and that they could have possibly tipped his blood pressure over the scale and caused his death, doesn't change the fact that he's gone.
I guess I just wanted to ask if anyone knows how related high blood pressure and clusters are. I know the blood pressure is raised during an attack, but could clusters be caused by high blood pressure or do most of you only have high blood pressure during your attacks?
Thank you to all who answered my questions for him last year, it really helped us get through a VERY rough two weeks, knowing he wasn't alone was of great help to him.
I don't mean to depress anyone, I'm just looking for some answers and hoping if anyone else on the board is putting off going to the doctor that this makes them rethink it. Please learn from this and don't neglect doctors because you don't want to deal with your health. Being tough is all about facing up to things you're afraid of.

Sorry about your Dad, I lost mine a few years back and it still hurts.
I see no relation between high BP and CH, there are a wide range of people that post here....some with high BP and most with no prob in that area.
I could be wrong but your message is a good one.

I am really sorry about your Dad. Losing a parent is the worst, however old you are yourself. I wish you the best in with coming to terms with it in time.
There has been quite an extended recent discussion on the medications section of the site about BP, there may be something new or interesting in there.

Sorry, dystopia one word of caution. I have just noticed that Mr subluxationskill has posted the final bit on the BP thread and if you look elsewhere you will see that his ideas have been met with derision from the CH experts here.

I understand her point about the Blood pressure... I dont know about anything.. but I do know that no matter if you have high BP or not, when you are in pain, or angry.. it goes up. I can imagine severe pain like CH could cause ones BP to go up temporarily..

I have very normal healthy blood pressure except for when I have a cluster headache then my blood pressure goes up alot. May you find peace soon over your fathers passing. I am sorry for your loss.

Yeh, I know they are not Docs but then neither is Mr subluxationskill but he seems to think he can cure everything. I meant that the Ch sufferers here (like you) have tried most things and have more knowledge and experience between them than so-called experts like him. New people really might believe that he can cure them. I was just trying to extend a word of caution if dystopia has missed the 'debates' on the 'upper cervical manipulation' stuff.

Re: CH and BP. My BP is 110/79 unless I'm in cylce where it usually rises to about 145/120.

I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad. Mine died in Mar 2000 and I still hurt.
I have been told that the high blood pressure is caused by the pain, and not the other way around, but that doesn't mean it's true for everyone.
You bring to attention a very good issue though. That's why everyone here always strongly advocates a Dr or neuro's diagnosis. Not all headaches that are behind the eye and in the temple are clusters, and could well be an indicator of something more serious and deadly.
I'm sorry for your loss, but glad we were able to provide some information and comfort to you and your father while he was suffering.

Sorry you lost your dad. Too many of my family die in their 50s too. all too soon, I'll have escaped them. All I can say is that things will get a bit easier after time. My dad has been gone for 32 years which means I have known him dead longer than alive...weird
I don't know about HBP but my feeling is that it's not a major factor. Take care and stick around.

Dystopia, I have High Blood Pressure and some heart problems, so despite taking 720 mg of verapamil my BP stays at about 145/85 at rest with a heart rate of about 90 BPS. Now when i get a CH my BP skyrockets to 220/105 and a heart rate of about 150, and at times even higher. I had HBP before I had CH, so there's no telling.
So sorry for the loss of your Dad, i don't know what it's like to lose a Dad because i still have mine (barely).

Hey I was thinkin (oh on not that !!!)....aren't there issues with meds and heart desease...was your dad on anything.....I am really sorry if ya mentiond that and I fergot it or missed it in previous post. But was thinking there were some possible serious side effects of the meds 'in combination' to heart troubles and high blood pressure ?......I'm prolly dumber then dumb with this post and area Pam (sorry)

I apologize in advance for what I'm about to say here, but I feel it's very important. Your dad's case is yet ANOTHER example of how dangerous false cluster diagnoses really are. I'm not saying he wasn't a clusterhead, but later life onset like that IS very uncommon and there really are other reasons for severe headache that indicate another underlying health concern. Yes, cluster coupled with high blood pressure is common, but not mutually inclusive by any means. If your dad had heart disease and high blood pressure historically, that could easily have been the cause of his severe headaches. But that doesn't make them cluster just because some doctor was too lazy to dig a little deeper and learn a little more.
We have a friend here in Calgary who was suffering severe headache (but Mike and I recognized it was not cluster). After TWO YEARS of testing, doctors, and WAY too much pain - it was discovered he had an aneurysm in his kidney and had to have it removed. This man would have died without that surgery. What if a doctor had dismissed him with a cluster diagnosis?
Obviously by the number of new posters here, cluster headache is quickly becoming a catch-all diagnosis for otherwise unidentifiable pain. Cluster IS a very rare condition - and it really DOES follow a strict set of symptoms. Variations from those symptoms, IN MY OPINION, indicate a variation from cluster headache (read: NOT cluster headache).
Again, I'm sorry for your loss - I hope however, it can make even just one person here get a second opinion if their 'cluster' symptoms don't fit the mold. It very well could be a lifesaver. Especially if folks are prescribed cluster medications when they're not really clusterheads. Scary shit.

I'm terribly sorry for the loss of your dad. That is a terrible loss no matter how it happens or when. You and your family are in my prayers.
Above all, don't hold yourself responsible in any way for your father's death. In no way are you responsible. With all of the difficulty many of us have had getting our disease properly diagnosed I tend to agree with a couple of others that he very likely was diagnosed by a Dr. that was not very familiar with CH, but had heard of it and tagged your dad with it. None of this gives any comfort for the loss, but I hope it will help with the feelings of guilt and or failure to see the problem. I am by no means an expert as are some of the others here, just a long time sufferer.

BP. Mine has been slowly climbing over the years. Never have taken my BP during an attack. I think I'll do it next time just to see. Shouldn't have to wait too long somewhere between 2 and 4am tomorrow he will arrive for his daily visit -- the bastard.

I too am sorry to hear of your dad's passing. And also, thank you for your wise words urging us to not keep putting off that doc. visit. Like your dad, I hate to go to the doc and only do when I am so miserably sick or in pain that I can't stand it anymore. Dumb idea on my part.
As for the BP, mine is low 110/58 with a resting heart rate around 60. I've never taken it during a HA, but maybe sometime I'll do that just for comparison. Just from how I feel, I'd imagine I might just be blowin off the cuff.

Thanks so much everyone for all our kind words, even with my Dad gone you're all still being great support.
Something occured to me reading your posts and that is that perhaps they weren't cluster headaches...but are there any types of headaches that you get at the same time every day? He used to get his at 11am every morning for an hour or two (usually an hour and a half) and during the first one, when taken to emergency, he was given oxygen and it helped.
I know high blood pressure can cause severe headaches behind on side of the face/eye as well. I guess it doesn't matter now what caused his death, but at hard times like this you seek out answers in all regards.
Again, thank you so much for all your warm replies. The first time my Dad told me about clusterheadaches I cried for everyone that gets them, I can't imagine how awful they must be and to think of how strong you all are and that you deal with this almost daily blows my mind and I feel great respect for all of you.
Let's hope they figure this one out soon so no one has to suffer fromt hese monsters. You'll all be in my prayers and thoughts.

I am very sorry for your loss. It is so devastating to lose a parent, the sense of loss never goes away, but it does get easier to handle as time passes. I lost my father 3 years ago and my mother 10 years ago. I can look back now without the pain, but I will still miss them every day.
