Quick Imitrex Question.....

I've heard that OD'ing on the stuff is detrimental to your heart..... ... anyway, when I took one last night at the onset of the Devil, I could feel this burning sensation in my heart... anyone ever have that same side effect?.... or is it something I shouldn't worry about. I'm afraid if I tell my doc, he's gunna take me off it, and that's the only thing that does the trick for me.... half the time anyway.

Big Dan, Definitely tell your doc. That very burning sensation is what I had when they gave me immitrex. The subsequent ekg they did showed me as having a heart attack. The blood work said I didn't, but it caused cardiac ischemia for me. Immitrex is no longer an option in my arsenal, but I have since taken maxalt MLT with no reaction and 2 of them 20 min. apart as instructed combined with the O2 knocked the beast dead. Jonny said it right, being dead is NOT option for a clusterhead. Cat

As everyone else said... Tell your doc... Don't play with this shit... It may be a God send, but it won't be worth it if it kills you. There's other treatments out there, so if trex is out, you'll just have to find the one that's right for you. PFDAN................................. Drk^Angel

Tell your doc. I also went thru this with the pills. Injection never affected me that way It felt like my heart but turned out to be a GI reflex but Jonny is correct ya gotta tell the doc and see what they say. Get checked. I just got out of hospital not due to Imitrex but due to interaction of Verapamil and Neuro adding Nadolol to my prevents. The combo almost gave me a heart attack. It is not worth screwing with. The HA will go away. Dead don't.

| Keep pondering this and you'll have no need to talk to your doc. Read the little packet (I know that's tough being a guy...) that came with the Trex. It's perfect bathroom material. If that does not convince you, tell me where you live so I can stop by and smack you upside yer head!   Seriously, SEE YOUR DOC! TomM

Well, I called him, and he said that it was a normal side effect.... pressure in the chest. I tried saying that it was more of a "chest nausea".... but he stuck with his story.... ... guess it's alright... but I haven't had to take another since last wednesday....

PRECAUTIONS General: Chest, jaw, or neck tightness is relatively common after administration of IMITREX Injection. Chest discomfort and jaw or neck tightness have been reported following use of IMITREX Tablets and have also been reported infrequently following the administration of IMITREX ® (sumatriptan) Nasal Spray. Only rarely have these symptoms been associated with ischemic ECG changes. However, because sumatriptan may cause coronary artery vasospasm, patients who experience signs or symptoms suggestive of angina following sumatriptan should be evaluated for the presence of CAD or a predisposition to Prinzmetal variant angina before receiving additional doses of sumatriptan and should be monitored electrocardiographically if dosing is resumed and similar symptoms recur. Similarly, patients who experience other symptoms or signs suggestive of decreased arterial flow, such as ischemic bowel syndrome or Raynaud syndrome, following sumatriptan should be evaluated for atherosclerosis or predisposition to vasospasm (see WARNINGS). http://www.gsk.com/products/imitrex_us.htm I am not a doctor.....but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night.   Seriously, I feel I am responsibly for my own health care. I am not trying to be a trouble maker, just be careful. This could be serious. There are other members of the board who have cardiac problems who have experience living with both. I wish you the best. PFDAN's Mark

I think that his little worry is based on the fact that I'm 22, excelent cholesterol and excelent blood pressure. They did blood work before the scripts....

Big Dan, I'm glad you talked to your doctor. However, I am very uneasy about his lack of concern. You may be 22 and in good health, but I was 24 and in good health the first time I had an ischemic attack. I have coronary artery spasms, and that was only diagnosed after them doing a cardiac cathaterization. Angina pain is nothing to ignore. It's one thing to have blood work done BEFORE, you need to get it done again after, and get an ekg done. If you take the trex again and get the same reaction, go directly to an ER, do not pass go, and get an ekg. That's the only way you'll know for sure if it's your ticker or your upper GI tract. I'm no doctor, but it just isn't something to mess around with. There's no reason why you can't continue on the trex - Svenn is doing just fine even after a heart attack. But you have to KNOW what you're dealing with or you won't know when you need emergency care. Just my humble opinion. Cat

| I agree with Cat on this. Sounds like your doc is making assumptions. He should have you in and run further tests. There is a stinging sensation with trex injections but.....in the heart? I don't know about that..... As big a pain in the ass as it is I think I would insist on more tests. Read Catlinds reply again. She has some great suggestions. Karen

Big_Dan. I have heart problems like,SVT's,Heart Murmur, and mitravalve prolapse. My cardiologist said that it would be fine to use. He also warned, to look for signs and symptoms of chest pain, upset stomach, Etc.... I also have high blood pressure, and i check it at home regularly. I ussuallyuse a whole 6 mil Inj, simply because it works better for me than the half dose does. Now i have had the burning in my chest, but don't ussualy worry about it unless it gets worse or i get short of breath. Shortness of breath is a dangerous sign. Read about the Imitrex tip in the column to the left of the screen. Tell this to your Doc, i did, and he said it might be a good idea as long as you don't get an infection from it. I personaly haven't heard of anyone getting an infection from doing this the right way, using alcohol and being as clean as you can be. This way you don't get as much Imitrex in your system, (a 3 mil shot) but many people here find it to be all they need to do the trick. I hope that has helped you some, good luck! Mikey, ;D
