well about 3 months ago i started waking up with massive headaches and pain in my left temple and eye. went to the docs thinking it was the famaly migrane. got told it was cluster headaches. came home did some reasearch found this site among others. but one question i still have is. am i cronic or episodic? befor i started taking the meds(elavil) i would wake up almost EVERY morning with a headache. so much so that going to bed sucked because i knew i would wake up with one. and i will get one about mid-day about once a week, though its fairly speratic as to when one will come. It sounds cronic to me but what does it soundlike to you guys?

Welcome aboard YA Mike, I don't think you can determine if you are chronic yet. The definition of chronic is a cycle that lasts at least one full year with less than 14 consecutive days without pain. I hope you find some answers here and I know you'll find lots of information. Cat

LOL how long have you been waiting to use that one! LOL   Actually, I didn't know for sure if it had to be med free or not so I figured it was safer to err on the side of caution Cat

I don't know if all doctor's agree on the definition of chronic. My doctor clearly diagnosed me as chronic, and for as long as he's been treating me, I've always been trying one thing or another (triptans, verapamil, depakote, etc...). Hell, I've always said that's why they call it a 'practice'. They are learning as they go. -Fu

I would say episodic until proven otherwise by the criteria Jonny and Cat laid out.

Ya mike, you're a long way from being diagnosed as chronic. I think you're question was more like should you be worried about being chronic. I guess I'd say don't worry about it. If it happens, it's not like there's anything you could do differently to avoid it, so why worry about it? Chronic is a label that doesn't make your pain any more or less agreeable.

Hey Cat.........Jonny has been waiting for 4 yrs. now and so have I. " which am I? " when you have been tortured by a beast nightly...daily for more than a year... oh I meant more than 16 years........when the sucker has torn your life apart......one person at a time. when that beast has taken every single thing you hold dearly and thrashed it to the ground.....when friends who you love also suffer.......threaten to do away with themselves..... Lets end with them............Yeah. Lets end with them them. This family is all the family I'll ever need. So what was your question? Am I chronic? Nope. Or you'd know WTF I was talking about. Sorry everyone......I'm on the PP me

The answer is there is no answer. I consider myself a very lucky person in this crowd-I have only had 2 "episodes" in my whole life. The first one lasted about 9 months-only at night-but not every night, but often several a night. I did find a med that helped me. So I started to believe I would be chronic-then they ended and stayed away 5 YEARS! I was elated and began to believe they were gone. Then they showed up again last year. They have now been here about a year this time. Again-I am lucky. I have a med that seems to work for me-it hasn't eliminated them, but keeps them mild and less occurences. They started out one or two a week (night), escalated a bit til med kicked in. Now they have gone down to about one every 2 weeks- nontheless are not gone altogether. So technically this qualifies me as chronic-but if it goes like last time, I hope to have years in between. No guarantees- no way to know...it sucks. Good luck-

Glad you found us. Hope they end soon and never come back, but hang around anyway and learn. There is a wealth of knowledge and information available here that i did not find in twenty five years of looking, and there are also some very caring people to help you through the tough times. Take the quiz and read read read. Don't get discouraged. It is easy when the beast is sitting on your skull to feel there is no hope, but as long as the sun rises in themorning there is still hope. Progress is being made!

Maybe someone should do a study to see if male children born under the name Mike have a higher preponderance of CH than others. Way to many Mike's out there. Mike

| Still looking for the mammary inspector job aye. Don't you think all these years of working with metals has made your hands too rough? Now a cube dweller like me would be much more tender to the skin. Any takers? ;D
