A divided nation given the opprtunity to reunite

One thing that can be said of this war is that it has divided the world and this nation. I see a place where this nation can once again unite and stand as one again. I've noticed that since our justification of going to war to disarm Iraq from their WMD has not been met since we have found none (though I'm sure we will now that we can look better, not much unlike the cop that plants the gun on the victim he shot mistakenly believing he was armed). But, there is much rejoicing lately of freeing the oppressed from it's tyranical dictator. I think that humanity being showed in our country is a step forward for our country. There has never been a time where a military action for humanitarian reasons has been welcomed soo much. I think this is the turning point to unity for our country. Seeing the overwhelming support for liberating Iraq from its awful tyrany, which I too think is wonderful, I'd love to see all of you who lambasted Jimmy Carter for merely refusing to give as much aid to our allies who were torturing their citizens until they stopped the rape and torture come forward and admit that was a good and humane policy. And those who lambasted Clinton for going into Somalia to stop 1 million people from starving to death and leaving the survivors to be ruled by a brutal and murderous warlord can also feel free to retract their earlier comments. Those who said Clinton shouldn't go to war to stop the genocide in Serbia and Bosnia? Feel free to take back your criticism. We can unite once again. We on the left side of the aisle would welcome your newly found concern for human rights. We can move forward to a single beat! America unite!

It's great news from Baghdad. You’re right, this at least makes some sense. It’s not all bad. Bush and Tony may come out of this thing rather well. Soon, there will be movies and we can go through it all over again. Ya never get a break. I heard this afternoon that now the ones who have the most doubt about democracy in Iraq, are the very ones who were sure it be easier. Just something I noted. By the way, Ted. If I'm not mistaken, George the First sent some forces into Somalia in December 1992. It's a fuzzy memory though. In any case, it was Clinton who tried to make it real. Serbia is a good example too, Ted. Also, well more than half...much more than half...... of our foreign aid goes to well-developed countries rather than ones that need it. Another thing I find disturbing. Anyway, the war looks like it's winding down and if there are WMD, it's about time they were found. I’m happy most of our soldiers will make it home, too. We need to get of the way to make room for Halliburton too. Charlie

It gives me great joy to see the people of Iraq released from the fear of tyranny and torture. When I watched the statue come down in Baghdad city center yesterday, I cried, and rejoiced, and it was like watching the Berlin wall come down. At the very same moment, my heart aches for the lives lost. Not just in this war, but in the years of oppression and hell the people in Iraq lived with. It is a bittersweet moment, and unfortunately Ted, I do not believe it will unite. No one likes to say they were wrong, and people who are right love to gloat over those who were wrong when it comes to the extreme sides. (not the general populace) I have maintained from the very beginning that this was the right thing to do. I have stated before that I don't care what the initial reason for the war was, the people of Iraq DESERVE the opportunity to live as they will. I look forward to the day that I can plan my trip to Babylon and Baghdad and see with my own eyes the wealthy culture that was Mesopotamia (gotta rotate the spelling so I'm sure that one of them is right hehe). It truly is a wonderful historical location, and the people that call it home, are a very intelligent people. I'm glad they will be able to use that intelligence for their own ends, and not the ends of a dictator. Cat

I'll gloat! Did I just see Ted and Charlie jump on Dubya's coat tails and shout come over and join us, we were right? Oops, guess I just blew my chance to reunite. Besides, Dubya didn't so it for no stinkin' human rights, he did it for oil and revenge, remember?

Oil and revenge are a big part of this thing but I really don't believe this was for just oil. This was to scare the shit out of them A-rabs......not that that is all bad Here's the deal: We are looking for someone to sit in Baghdad and get things going for this collection of hungry people. Who are some choices so far? Some stuff I've gleaned: Rumsfeld wants Ahmed Chalabi, head of the Iraqi National Congress, an exile group, to head a new army. This guy is rumored to be trying to get Iranian-type Shiites to help him. This will go over big in Iraq who fought a decade long war with them. Chalabi was also convicted of embezzlement in Jordon and sentenced to 22 years in prison but escaped to London. Cheney loves him. What a surprise Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz, want retired General Jay Garner as Viceroy. Here is a guy who visited Israel, signed a statement blaming Palestinians for the conflict in the West Bank and said that the Israeli Army is showing remarkable restraint. Frankly, he's pretty much right but it's in the record and I'm sure the Iraqis will be tickled pink when they discover what they will call a "Zionist" in charge. Gee Whiz Another candidate for Iraq is James Woolsey who calls this World War IV and says openly that Islamic countries are America's enemies. Again, lots of truth so far but the Iraqis will love this guy too. Yikes Ah, war. It keeps things interesting. Nevertheless, Bush and Blair have looked pretty good and so far, have been fairly quiet. I'm still hoping our victory in Baghdad...... (I'm sorry, it sounds funny) doesn't serve as a recruiting poster for bin Laden and other Arab Bush-haters. Bush-hating is my job. Of course the thing isn't over yet and it takes time to find some WMD, real, perceived or planted. Nah, even Bush wouldn't do that but it will be all over the place like our "fake" moonlanding. It was neat seeing that statue come down though. Amazing that anything that ugly, could have existed. That goes for the real thing and company, as well. Who knows? Keep the faith, we've been lucky so far. Charlie

| While that was a miniscule point in my post and not really the crux of what I was saying, it was in there and so is fair game. We just went to war with them and 1000 soldiers didn't die from WMD, which should tell us something. Before the war I was quite sure they had them. Now that it's almost over I'm less sure then before. I guess mainly because those thousand soldiers didn't die from using them. As far as planting them, no one will know for sure now how they got there, if something's unearthed.

I'm with Ted. I hope this reunites the country for the better. I hope it also reunites this board for the better. Whatever the reasons that we went in, they are moot now. Lets just hope the results are all that we hope and anticipate. Unfortunately, I also agree that even if WMD are found now.....no one will believe anything we say. But, that doesn't matter at this point either, another moot point. Let's just hope it is stabilized soon, Tracey
