Pheochromocytoma and cluster headaches

Hello,

First let me apologize for the long post, but the information may be of help to some sufferers.

I am a 40 year old male registered nurse who began to experience severe unilateral headaches about 2 years ago. Initially the pain was my only significant symptom.

Analgesics, including narcotics were completely useless. All the morphine did was turn me from a person in severe pain to a sleepy person in severe pain.

I was treated for cluster headaches with prednisone with some improvement.

However, several months ago I began to experience palpitations and blood pressure spikes associated with the episodes. Initially my headaches began before the spike in bp. Then the spike in bp and palpitations were noticable before the headache.

I had some blood and urine tests for pheochromocytoma ( a rare tumour, generally of the adrenal glands), which were negative.

My symptoms persisted and eventually I had an mibg scan (a nuclear medicine scan) which showed a left adrenal mass.

It is certainly possible that others out there may have symptoms of cluster headaches which may be due to pheochromcytoma. It may be worth mentioning to your doctor.

Please post any information about this correlation here. Thanks.

Thanks for the info mental, it's always good to know about possible other diagnoses.

You used a big word though, and I can't even pronounce it to mention it to my doctor LOL.

I am in no way laughing at you, or demeaning you, that word just intimidated me.  Tell us more about this condition?

Would it be possible that after 26 years of this shit that I might have that long word and I can dig the little nugget out?

Wouldn't that condition become quite noticable after a period of time?

Your info could be extremely valuable to a new sufferer and may possibly save them a lot of grief.

Would it or could it apply to long time sufferers ?

Pheochromocytoma is sometimes part of a condition called multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome (MEN). People with MEN often have other cancers (such as thyroid cancer) and other hormonal problems.
