I got rejected...
« on: Apr 1st, 2003, 8:16am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

my application to graduate school that is.  I applied to Rutgers back in January for their masters' program in literature, and after really thinking that I was going to get in, I log onto their application check early this morning to find that they have completed reviewing it and have decided to decline acceptance.

I can only wish that it was an April Fool's joke... but it isn't...

I have no idea what to do with my life anymore.  My current job as an editor in the travel industry really sucks and feels 'dead-end'.  Besides, most of the editorial field isn't hiring - not only the travel part.  I was planning on advancing my degree so I could teach college.  Don't think I'll be doing that now.

Maybe it's time I think about changing my entire career...

thanks for letting me vent.  I'm very frustrated and upset today   Cry

Have you thought about becoming certified to teach H.S. Literature? We NEED good teachers. Pay ain't so good, summers off, snow days, many holidays off, diverse population and some of the most educated group of people I ever associated with.  Cheesy

Slammy's right Maggie.  Get that transcript out there.....lots of good schools around.  I've got both a teaching degree and a master's degree......so, I've BTDT.

If I can help in any way......just let me know.

Maggie-

I'm sorry to hear that you've been disappointed. But Slammy & Roxy are right...there are tons of good schools out there.  Just because Rutgers turned you down (and what do they know anyway...it's THEIR loss!) doesn't mean there aren't tons of other schools that WILL accept you.

Go for a change of scenery and COMPLETELY change your life!

Good luck!

Maggie:

What crappy news! It's tough all around right now, at schools and in the job market. A lot of schools are being really picky about acceptance right now. Doesn't mean you aren't qualified, just means the world is a mess and maybe it is worth another shot when things calm down.

I think the world needs good teachers. If you like working with young adults and have a love for literature, what about teaching on the community college level for awhile, just to make sure that is what you want to do? It does not require a masters degree. If you like it, you could reapply to Rutgers, or another Masters program next year. Might even strengthen your application to have the experience on there. It would be a bonus to find out if you liked it before you invest in another 4 years of school...

Hang in there, and I'm sending you happy thoughts with this post.

UHHH.....how about changing colleges.

Some of our finest educated individuals came from little know colleges.

I went to Harvard. All I learned there was you had to be an actual student to hang around the girls dorm.

Angry Angry Maggie,
I am so sorry for your dissapointment today, having set goals and setting out to achieve them, casting aside oppertunities and options that might not have been so quickly dissmissed had you a clue of the outcome can be devastating to a persons ego,
I know that especially being a clusterhead, you have the stmina and gumption to stand up, brush off the Rutgers bad news dust and going to their compition will have to be your revenge.
Please don't allow them to discourage you from fullfillment of your goal. not after coming this far.
I am Certain that "THEIR LOSS WILL BE ANOTHER INSTATUTION'S GAIN" And ultimately the people you care for in your chosen profession will recieve even better care, because you had to deal with this hardship in the final quest for you future!
Years from now they will be asking you to come to their School to do simposeiumns and lectures and you will have the Option then to remind them that you were not good enough for them now!
Basicly what I am saying is "Once they was a tiny old ant, couldn't move that rubber tree plant" but not that ant processes %90 of the rubber in the free world!
You Go Girl!  With High hopes you can accomplish anything!        Pappy

Well Maggie that's bummer news. Hopefully you'll find another good college and get that degree anyway. Just don't give up on what you want to do.

If it makes ya feel any better, my daughters dog rejected me the day I decided to let her get a dog. He was all happy to let me drive him home in my van. And of course he doesn't mind me buying his dog food, or paying for two vet bills. Otherwise he'd probably just flip me off if he knew how.

Thanks for all your thoughts.  You're all right - it did happen for a reason.  Maybe I just wasn't supposed to go THERE.

I would definitely leave the area if I could and pursue my study.  Unfortunately, the SO isn't willing to move, and I couldn't see myself leaving him or my job (as much as I can't stand it sometimes) behind - not to mention, my parents.

About the teaching thing.  I took secondary ed as a minor, but dropped the program when I thought I couldn't deal with teenagers.  Who knows, maybe I can go back to that.  I have a close friend who is a teacher - she's always busy.

And Slammy...  I only wanted to study in New Jersey, cuz I live here  Smiley   The Rutgers campus was only 10 minutes from my job/home!

Frank.. when I used to live at home with my parents, my dog would be all nice to me sometimes.  Then, as soon as I left the house, it's like she doesn't want anything to do with me... lol

Decided on trying for Fairleigh Dickenson next - they seem a little better.

thanks again
maggie
