I usually have a cycle in Late July-Aug that last fr two months. All of a sudden I get hit in early March. The severity is less but the frequency is unbelievable. 8-10 a day. I'm also feeling the pain in my lower Jaw as well now. Nothing seems to work anymore and I haven't slept in days. How do you know if you are becoming chronic? Cry

You have to wait one year.

The term chronic, when used with cluster headaches, refers to a measurement of time, not intensity or frequency.

Chronic = one year of (almost) daily headaches without medication.

Pain in the jaw is normal in many sufferers. The trigeminal nerve has a branch that goes to above the upper teeth and below the lower teeth.

You say nothing works anymore but didn't say what you had tried. Imitrex? Oxygen? Verapamil?

Can you give us a little more information.

Welcome to the board.

Don't worry about the chronic thing.  Take it one day at a time.

My last cycle started in November 2001 and went until April 2002.  For awhile I too was getting 8 very intense attacks per day (and my customary 3 at nite).  This was also very unusual for me as my previous cycles were one per nite for 3-4 months.  Also, nothing worked - prednisone, imitrex, amerge, depakote.  Maybe the inderal worked in April, but I really can't be sure.

Anyway, it stopped.  Now, everyday (just about) I get a few minutes of pain here and there.  No biggy.  So if this is chronic - I'll take it.

Wishing you all PFDAN always, Linda T.

I'm no doctor, but, from what I understand:

If you started early March... you shouldn't even be thinking 'chronic' yet.  Cycles move around, they change too.  When you've been dealing with this for, say, 6 months you can start to wonder.  6 Months is longer than average, but still not clinically defined as 'chronic'.

'Chronic' cluster is no different than episodic in intensity, frequency or duration of each attack.  You may be experiencing a change in your cycle, but it doesn't mean you're any more (or less) likely to become chronic.

One day at a time.

I think the duration of "no meds" in measured in weeks, not a whole year

Closing in on 28 years chronic I think im qualified to say that chronic IS:

If you dont have two consecutive pain free weeks in a year unmedicated you are chronic.

don and jonny...........Thanks for correcting me. You're right about the 2 weeks un-medicated. I didn't make myself very clear up above.
