Scuba diving and ch's

My family is planning a dive trip for this summer, and I’m somewhat scared shitless concerned about getting hit while underwater.    I haven’t gone diving since I started having ch’s.  We usually do two day dives and a night dive, and we’ll probably stay for about 5 days.  That’s twelve total dives, and I’m really afraid my luck isn’t that good.  Since my ch’s have no rhyme or reason to them, I’m kinda worried.  My husband only has one class to go to become a dive master….so I know he could probably handle whatever happens, or as he said…"I won’t let you pull out your regulator at 80 ft."  Undecided

I’m wondering if the pressure underwater, or any of the other variables could bring on an attack.  Has anyone else ever gone diving while in cycle?  Once again….I don’t want to ruin everyone else’s fun, just because of my stupid head.  Even thought about strapping a trex injection on my thigh along with my knife….can you inject underwater… ??? Roll Eyes

Could always just lay on the beach and have the little guys run drinks out to me…..but, it’s just not as much fun.

Any input out there?

Thanks,
Tracey

Hi Rox, Sounds like a fun trip!
I know I recently read a post about scuba diving and there is someone here that does it for a living but cant remember who that is.  ???
Anyways, hoping you have a great time and the beast dont find ya down there. Maybe he is afraid of water?  ???

suzy
Rox, click on search and put in "scuba diving". You'll come up with a few posts and maybe you can contact one of them.

Hey Roxy

I remember some posts by a guy that said he was a cave diver, probably the same one suzy is talking about. He is new to the board but he said something like one of his clients was a doc and that's how he found out that he had CH. Since he does this for a living he might be the one to ask if you can track him down.

Laying on the beach having guys run drinks out to ya sounds fun...depends on who the guys are...maybe they give massages too!   Tongue

I hope you go on your trip, at least you'll be with your family. You deserve a wonderful PF vacation!!!!

Trac,

Just keep it to 50 ft, this way you dont have to decompress if you need to come up fast. Just hold your nose on the way up and blow out to equalize the pressure.

Prob sloved ;D

Roxy, Dont worry about it. I've been a diver for most of my life and never been hit underwater.  When I have been hit is several hours after a long  deep dive. . I used to think many years ago that this may have been the cause of my ch. before I knew less than I know now.    Go and enjoy. Though I've been to the depths  I have never done deep dives when in a cycle. But certainly in the shallows to 30-40' with the pretty fishies its never been an issue. Just dont get yourself sunburned. Besides theres monsters down in the deep dark waters. ;D .  By the way many quality dive operators have oxygen too, and as you know CH affects us all a little differently. .........mj...

Keep in mind that dive 02 is not pure 02.

Its a mix of 02 and nitrogen.........we need 100% 02.

I am a divemaster and have had episodic ch for 10 years. Although I have never gone diving during a cycle ( I cant drink during my cycles and wait till they are over before taking any trips) I wouldnt be afraid to do so. Just make sure that you go with a reputable dive operator that will have O2 on board. For those that dont know , scuba divers use air... regular old compressed air, not pure o2, unless diving with nitrox which has up to 40 % O2 and 60 % nitrogen. The O2 is for near drownings and incase someone  pushes their no deco time and blows through their safety stop. What is with the line about plugging your nose and exhaling ? you dont need to do that to equalize on your ascent, it occurs naturally as I am sure you are aware since you are certified.

Hey roxy,
i know its a little late for this reply but im the cavediver that karen mailed you about, yes i dive for a living and yes i did a lot of diving out here in mexico, while i was in cycle,
the beast did come visit me on one dive, i was an hour back in this cave, and i felt a hit coming on, i thought this is shitty cos ive got another hour to go untill i reach the surface, but for some reason the head ache was´nt the usuall full blown kip 10 and i managed to keep it together untill i reached the exit, as soon as i surfaced the clusterfuck went away. i was getting 1-2 hits a day usually in the early hours of the morning, so this hit under water was out of cycle, other than that i never got hit again underwater over the 8 week cycle.
before i discovered this site, i used to think that it was diving that caused my head aches so it  was a relife after i took this doctor diving that she told me what i really had, dont let the beast stop you from diving, my advise to you is if you feel a clusterfuck coming on head straight to the surface and get on the o2 you should´nt be doing any deco dives anyway if your a sport diver wich means you can make a direct accent to the surface unless your like me and decide to do long penetration cave dive. wishing you pain free days and nights,
sorry its a little late.

Lots of good advise above and... I don't see why you can't do an Imitrex injection underwater... as long as you're careful about how fast you dive.

If you dive too fast.... the pressure at 100 feet might push the statdose plunger down and you would lose all of your Imitrex in the water. But the needle (much smaller) is open at the other end so if you don't dive too fast, the pressure will equalize... and your Imitrex will stay in the syringe. Not a concern if you just get the whole thing wet so there's no air pressure to deal with.

As long as it stays in the syringe, you should be able to inject underwater. ;D
