A Brief Military History of France

So the French still aren't on board with us spanking Iraq. Oh boo hoo. Let's take a look at the mighty French military prowess, shall we? Gallic Wars - Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian. Hundred Years War - Mostly lost, saved at last by female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare: "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman." Italian Wars - Lost. France becomes the first and only country to ever lose two wars when fighting Italians. Wars of Religion - France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots Thirty Years War - France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her. War of Devolution - Tied. Frenchmen take to wearing red flowerpots as chapeaux. The Dutch War - Tied War of the Augsburg League/King William's War/French and Indian War Lost, but claimed as a tie. Three ties in a row induces deluded Frogophiles the world over to label the period as the height of French military power. War of the Spanish Succession - Lost. The War also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough, which they have loved ever since. American Revolution - In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome," and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare: "France only wins when America does most of the fighting." French Revolution - Won, primarily due the fact that the opponent was also French. The Napoleonic Wars - Lost. Temporary victories (remember the First Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up being no match for a British footwear designer. The Franco-Prussian War - Lost. Germany first plays the role of drunk Frat boy to France's ugly girl home alone on a Saturday night. World War I - Tied and on the way to losing, France is saved by the United States. Thousands of French women find out what it's like to not only sleep with a winner, but one who doesn't call her "Fraulein." Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline. World War II - Lost. Conquered French liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel Song. War in Indochina - Lost. French forces plead sickness, take to bed with the Dien Bien Flu. Algerian Rebellion - Lost. Loss marks the first defeat of a western army by a Non-Turkish Muslim force since the Crusades, and produces the First Rule of Muslim Warfare: "We can always beat the French." This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux. War on Terrorism - France, keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe. Attempts to surrender to Vietnamese ambassador fail after he takes refuge in a McDonald's. The question for any country silly enough to count on the French should not be "Can we count on the French?" but rather "How long until France surrenders?" Slammy

| This isn't very true as we weren't the major player but that was pretty cute. Even simpler: France attacks its friends and surrenders to its enemies. Charlie

Slammy, Fantastic post !! I was there in august of 1994, they wre celabrating the 50 years liberation of france ( i beleive it started on 08-12-94 )every morning they had parades and in the evening more celabrations with fireworks,etc.. What i am getting to is this fucked up nation and their citizens act ed as if this Charles DeGaulle liberated them by himself ( there were many military men and women from the U.S. ).Now i went to 2 of these events in the evening (partying, drinking, but most of all i was there for the ladies ;D). I was disguested how they would honor their own as if they did all the fighting and more or less not even mention the Americans( there was appr.3 ships of American military there for this )as for myself i just happen to be there with acouple of of bud's while this was going on.I felt so bad for the American( military people that were there ) it was as if they were'nt. BOYCOTT anything from FRANCE,GERMANY and KOREA !!! Just how i feel.

One more thing, during the gulf war, their news were claiming that we were buring these poor iraqi soldiers alive ( even the one's that were surrendering ). A very good friend of mine was there and this is what the french news media was reporting.

| We did. It was reported on our news too. Morbid as it is, it was a pretty clever thing to do. It was so simple it was genius. Our big fear for having casualties then was that the Iraqis were building trenches and tunnels in the desert and there would be some pretty heavy firefights to get by these entrenched soldiers. So, often our first line of advancing troops were bulldozers that just filled in the trenches and closed off all tunnels. Got rid of that problem and saved probably hundred or thousands of American soldiers' lives.

| Mr Slammy I'm really upset with you!! Why do you start this offensive words about Italian valour? And have you forgotten when in IRAQ, our air force hardly fought against Saddam? So we only won 2 wars? Not correct! In fact, Italy, from when is in this actual boot shape.... (and a "boot shape" tells clearly how we are....) NEVER WON A BATTLE!!!! EVER The 2 wars against French were between French and Piedmont (Savoy Monarchy there.... and... for the record.... where I actually live...) So ..... don't say Italy is a poor winner of wars...... NEVER WON! Oh...Ahem... and in IRAQ, 10 years ago..... two pilots on a hunter.... the unique mission ..... both caught, both prisoners......and without a shot from air or ground..... a success!.... ;D I hope that Italy will not have to fight..... NEVER!   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

C'mon Ueli, First of all, a fair bit of this is toungue-in-cheek humor, but you can't argue with history, even when you're fed the sanitized and Americanized versions that we are fed by our media and schools. I wonder about France's motives behind their position, but I haven't seen any speculation about that, have you? The only discussion is about America's damn-the-torpedoes march towards war. The French are lovers, not fighters! Ask any Frenchman! I have a friend who is French and last I talked to him, (before xmas 2001) his government was really having/causing problems. I don't know what is going on right now, but my own personal opinion is that France will wait to see who gets on board with who, and try to deduce where their best interests lie and align themselves accordingly.
