WINE LIST: My Cabernet Sauvignon page

This is for the people who emailed me with questions about wine. Most of the questions were about big, red wines, so here the Cabernet Sauvignon selections from my wine list, this week. I bought extra 1997 California Cabs after I tasted the 1998’s on release. I taste all the wines before I will add them to the list, so everything here is at least good, if not outstanding. You probably won’t find many 1997’s hanging around so look for 1999 for CA reds. In general, pass on the 1998’s (year of the El Nino, cool, cloud cover and rain). I am swamped with work, but I will eventually try to get to individual answers. Yes, the wines are expensive on this list, but I am in Downtown Beverly Hills….. you know, “Why pay less”. Uh..this doesn't translate well to the MB. Price is the last number. Jonny, The damn stuff gets you real warm and drunk, and makes women DOUBLE-JOINTED!!! But it’s frigging expensive and not all of it is good. Sooo….people follow the weather cycles during growing season, just like any other crop. Wine is made in the land, by the farmers and growers, not in the winery by the winemaker. Rick, In 1998, El Nino changed the weather pattern in CA (below Mendocino) from a sunny, hot, dry summer and fall, to cloudy, cool, moist. Cloudy and cool were the killers. Grapes with thick skins like cabernet sauvignon need heat and sunlight to fully ripen. 1998 produced a lot of under ripe, green, herbaceous flavors, like green bell pepper, canned peas, asparagus etc. not the flavors I’m looking for in a red wine. Some wineries knew their land and compensated for the weather and made good red wines, but in general (especially since the 1999’s are out) stay away from 1998 CA reds. PFDAN David J.

Hope all goes well with your flight. Remember to surrender your nail clippers (not dangerous but I guess they don't like you to be annoying ) Also, for god's sake don't forget to register your shoes. Your .357 is probably okay though.... Charlie

David, I was just curious as to if the cooler weather would create some Bordeaux like qualities or just plain spoil the batch. Good knowledge to have, Gracias.... -R
