Missing the REM-sleep

Went to see my neuro yesterday and he (thankfully) upped my lithium. But just a little bit, because my liver doesn't seem to like it all that much. Now I'm on 400 mg slow release at night and 100 mg one-time release in the morning. But that is not what I wanted to say. I asked you guy's about sleeping pills. I was pointed by Mr. Happy (still thankfull you did!) on a post of Echo where he talkes about a medicine that preventes going into REM. So I mentiod this to my neuro, but he immediately said no. According to him you will hallucionations when you're missing your REM-sleep. Is my neuro right or is he talking crap?? Have a nice and painfree weekend, Stampertje.

I believe from others posts that you can take them for a day or 2 but no more then that. I think Dramamine is one of them. (not sure about the spelling there) suzy

I used to think that nice elephant in the kitchen was a hallucination but then he started talking to me, now I dont think that its a hallucination at all. Am missing that REM sleep for a long time now. Its been about 3 months with very little sleep for me. Awaken when in sleep mode within ten minutes to an hour or so. I suspect that I seldom get into the REM stage. I must get some REM. I have often heard that over time your mind cannot function without the REM sleep. According to me and Ellie [the elephant] I seem to not hallucinate. I have in the past gone like this for upwards of 18 months. The work I do requires much concentration and perhaps that saves me or maybe the zone I get into during my attacks substitutes for the REM sleep. BTW. I really have never had a hallucination, at least not from lack of sleep. I used to know a sane old fella that claimed he seldom slept for more than two hours a night for his whole life and he was well into his 80s at the time. Perhaps REM requirements are as personal as our levels of pain. On the other hand I once "worked" in a large pshyciatric hospital and I know that many patients seldom slept at all.

I was unable to get treatment for sleep apnea for two years. Don't know how long I had it before that. I was found to stop breathing every few minuites and woke up to breathe. Not much Rem at all. Didn't remember any dreams. Never had a halucianion but was not mentally all there. PJB
