Ice is out, hot water bottles are in!!

I had a revelation last night of 'road to Damascus ' proportions. I have always tried killing my headaches with bags of frozen peas etc but have suspected that the ice itself does no more than create new pain that takes my mind off the headache. Well last night as my haeadache was turning into a good old 'pacer', in desperation I put the peas away and reached for the Hot Water Bottle. ( Don't ask how I managed to boil a kettle and fill the bottle with my head exploding, but I did!!) I laid down on the bed and put the bottle in the crook of my neck (you know that source of pain spot), and sort of used it as an additional pillow. I couldn't believe it, within 2 minutes the pain was gone, in fact it went so quickly it left me feeling in a state of shock. WOW!!! Thought I would pass this on in case it helps anyone else. Cheers Rob.

Hey Chuffy, Glad it worked for ya. I explained my dilemna to the doc. It is simultaneous = some god awful muscle cramp in the nec shoulder area (quazi moto) and then the intolerable pain in the facial areas (one sided and GOOD GAWD)!!!! It was this particular doc that suggested the HEAT to the muscular knot in the shoulder area while simultaneously applying COLD to the head and face. That's why I look like a LUNATIC But, over the years it has become my fave most effective dance (along wit ChocFullANuts). Hot tub with HOT rag on shoulder while ICE on head and face. First brew the Coffee and then do the rest.....LOL. I know it sounds Looney, but believe me, after 25 years and I dunno how ,much money and let downs with medications...........THAT dance is what sustains me. It is a regula tango. I always end up on the couch with towel twisted around my neck like a boxer and a cold rag on my face and I rock. It's the Tango..... I still rely on it. Meds, I take cuz I don't feel I have a choice, really....But, that dance, well it has taken me through the haze YEAR after YEAR. Don't knock it

Interesting, and I hope it wasn't just a co-incidence, and that your CH just happened to run its course. No matter. Anything positive is good to read. I'd probably have better results with ice in the hot water bag, but that's just me. Nice going. Charlie

This sounds like a good idea to try my next cycle. I could never use anything cold because I seem to start freezing when I'm in the pain, shaking from it but I think alot of that is panic also but think I'm gonna buy myself a heating pad for the next time and crank it up high. Thanks, suzy

Not surprising with the hot water thing. Have been using ice packs since day one, only because it was the accepted "Norm" presented. Problem is......I seem to be somewhat unlike the bulk of sufferers.......and beating the affected side is out of the question. When a full blown Hammer hits, the skin and bone on the outside seem to hurt as much as the grey matter on the inside. An ice pack is applied, but it's usually a diversion in pain.........moving it around causes as much topical pain as the internal Ice Pick. Several folks have mentioned hot showers....LONG hot showers, aimed directly at the temple/side of the head that's Partying Hardy. Haven't made it to the showers myself, but for me, ice doesn't do squat. If something works, just do it. We can debate "why" later. Pick your poison, RJ

I prefer hot to cold any day. I use a hot WET towel and wrap it around my head like a headpiece. I warm it back up in the microwave while I do the dance in the kitchen. Works well for me. Of course, perhaps I just like the beep, beep, beep the microwave makes when my towel is a steaming. It just makes me think relief might be just around the corner !!!

I Totaly agree HOT is good. Always seems to help me, for an added twist, the microwave is a very effective tool to heat towels for application. moisten towel (not dripping wet, too messy) insert into ziploc bag and heat on high for about a minute. the towel will be extremely hot but it will cut down on time consumption. best part is it is re-useable at least for a night, get a new towel for the next day/night. I make sure to stay away from heat during an attack. Got hit while in the shower once, and the water felt like drops of hot acid. PFDAN.................................. Drk^Angel
