My First neuro visit.......sucked

Howdy all....

Had My very first neuro visit today, after running all around town trying to gather the appropriate MRI and CT films for him to examine , for exactly (5 seconds).
This was only after he went through the traditional ritual of question asking. You know the ones....."So why did your doctor refer you to me?" and the ever popular "So what makes you think you have clusters?"

After counting to 50 .....40 more than the usual 10, figuring that I might as well make it worth my insurance companies $$.  I gave him the barrage of information (from this site) and the list of typical symptoms and the reasoning of my family Doc not to mention the info from the log I have kept since 11/05.

He Turned to his understudy med student and asked him a few questions ( I assume for teaching purposes and NOT to make me feel superior). He promptly changed one of my meds and sent me home. All in a span of about 15 minutes.

Dammit folks , it took me longer to fill out the paperwork for a first time appointment. I spent ALL FREAKIN DAY running around to get all these films from three different hospitals (enduring the usual rigamarole and red tape) for a 15 minute appointment. Just to get a three month supply of Elavil and to be told to continue the treatment I was already pursuing.

So .....In honor of my first visit to the neuro (who's last name I can't pernounce due to the inordinatley large content of consonants broken up by only two vowels) I shall share with the lot of you some NEW stupid questions. Maybe you have heard these.

Keep in mind that this is supposedly one of the best neurologists in the city and well versed in CH. according to my family doctor.

Q. Who is your family doctor?
A. What, it isn't in the referral form that you are currently looking directly at?

Q. Why are you wearing those sunglasses?
A.  Because I am senstive to bright light.....DUH!

Q. What medications are you taking?
A.  What...the list of ten in your lap isnt enough?

Q. Does it wake you up at night?
A.  ?????????? Do I really have to answer that?

  And the #1 stupid question......
Q. Are you having a headache right now?

At that I assumed the appointment was over and I took my new prescription and left without answering.

hope you all are in better spirits and PF

Start keeping a record of neuros.  I never did.  Now, when I look back and memory reminds me..............I just gotta LAUGH.  There are so few neuros who can claim any true understanding.  Fewer still who will relate on any level....Keeping that in mind you will perhaps not feel so "lost".  Just keep pluggin!  You are the one behing the wheel.

15 minutes with a neurologist is not all that bad. Many of my visits were less.  That said, the medical questions sound pretty dumb. The sun-glasses one, and the are you having a headache now? one is in the park.  I wonder if this guy had already seen copies of some of your tests, were they old or new? I imagine these guys hate the internet. CH.comers have their feet on the ground and are pretty well insulated from cranks and snake oil salesmen but too many others are not.

Don't get me wrong, the guy doesn't sound all that great and if you can't stand him, dump him.  All but a very few neurologists are aliens and infrequent visitors to our planet. It seems to be a magnet for wacko MDs.  I've had a couple that were useless, especially the fecal head who recommeded that I have exploratory surgery to eliminate other possibilites instead of ch. I knew what I had and only needed a prescription. What a yutz.  That was one time when my having epilepsy, and lots of experience with neurologists, saved me a ton of grief.

Anyway, don't give up. You'll find someone who will help you.

I must be one of the fortunate ones when it comes to Neuro visits.  Mine usually last 30 - 45 min.  No dumbass questions either.  Always the touch nose, walk up and down the hallway, reflex tests etc, which eat up about 10 min.

Not knowing what the hell was wrong with me, I begrudgingly went to my neuro out of sheer desparation. I was getting no answers any where else or stupid answers.  It turned out to be the best thing that ever happened! knew immediately what I had-but then came the caveat...not fatal but no known cause, no known cure and treating it was difficult and diverse.  Went throught he same routine tests, but finding a neuro that knows and understands is priceless.
Saved my sanity- I wish everyone could find a good one-she's in NJ-
