Let's get the word out by making a documentary

I’m in LA and working on the pilot for my own television show (wine and food), so I thought that with the advent of Digital Video almost anyone can put together and edit an informational video (called an industrial) or even a movie (Blair Witch Project). Brochures are good, but if we could hand a Doctor or sufferer or an insurance rep a VHS or DVD covering our position, in a more graphic way, we might be able to get through to them easier. There must be grants in the fine art community that need projects like this. There are lots of festivals that are looking for good documentary projects, and this seems tailor made for Oprah (a group of disparate people in pain, scattered around the world, banding together to get the word out about their plight). It’s got everything: pain, crying, broken lives, joy, frustration, the little guy fighting the corporations and government, desperation, hope, loss of life and multiple rebirths. Think Michael Moore type intrusive, in your face journalism. We won’t take NO for an answer. The good publicity a drug company could receive (and they know they could use it) having person after person singing the praises of their flagship head drug, could have the Maxalt people fighting the Zomig people fighting the Imitrex people, to be our backers. We could reach the world with this! I’ve had a union acting card since 1976, and studied with the Royal Shakespeare Company, so I’m not just talking out my ass. We could do this and probably for very little money. Directors, producers and studios are always looking for side project to give something back (and make themselves look good). Hell, if we bring Jonny in to pitch the project, they might just put together a Movie of the Week about his story. Projects are picked up in this town with little more than a paragraph description, they take that and flesh it out and voila, a movie. The fact that we are more interested in getting the word out, than making a ton of money, should get them hook, line and sinker. This pain is bigger than us and we should think big in return. No guts, no glory. David J.

If nothing else… I know lots of you have Digital Video cameras and each of you could tape (in your own style) your dance with the Beast. For example, what the pain is like for you (some in remission, some episodic and some chronic), how you’re relationships are affected (wives, husbands, children, employers, friends…) what you do to cope. Everyone is their own director, and filmed from spots all over the world (in front of the Empire State building, on your boat, in the revival tent). I do editing on my home computer and I could piece together 5 min. stories from the best ones, you musicians will add original music and we send it off. With all your individual styles (Duh) and a fast pace, it would be absolutely absorbing. Like the AIDS quilt was, all the different stories done in video. David J.

I like the second idea best. We keep control of content (because it’s us), we keep the profits (going to O.U.C.H.) We call it… “Dances with the Beast”. Kids this is a no brainer, the media will eat this up, mark my words. With a different directorial style every 5 min. it could never get boring. We live the content, no script writers necessary. We have GOT to do this. Damn, I wish someone was awake! Talk to me people. David J.

Read this thread.... http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=general;acti on=display;num=1036350779 So this is what I'm working on. It is taking some time. Oprah? I think so far there's been a non-response from that show - people correct me if I'm wrong ??? Whatever anyone can do to get the word out would be a good thing, judging from all the feedback I've received. If you'd like to email me about this.. my email address is to the left but you can also email me at peppermint2867@hotmail.com Peppermint

Great stuff Pepp. I should have known the idea of a documentary had been banged around before. The difference here is that we don’t have to present anything to anyone, we do it ourselves. Oprah will bite because she will be handed a complete package ready to go, not us reaching out to her to put something together. I saw her show on the Quecreek miners, of course ABC was plugging the show coming up, but it was a full package handed to her. This is an innovative way of doing a documentary. Kind of like the still photographers fanning out across the country, shooting for 24 hrs. called something like “A day in the life of America”. The people telling their own stories are doing the filming of their stories themselves. I can see backing from the Digital Video camera people, showing the world how great and how easy DV is. Editing is done in Window’s and Microsoft gives away tons of money (and is need of a PR facelift). It is outside the industry box, totally grass roots. Springing from the people themselves. No aesthetic distance between the subject and the audience. We don’t need any outside funding to get it going, just the price of a new DV tape. We don’t have to kiss anyone’s ass, we do it ourselves. There are so many channels that the industry people in this town are dying for original content, to fill up the time. With everyone shooting their own stories, this project makes itself. Talk about Reality Television, this is in your face reality. Everyone grab your camera, read the instructions. You decide what you think is important and film it. Tape is cheap and can be reused if you screw up. This empowers all of you. Instead of feeling like you have no power over this beast, go on the offensive, take control, show the world what YOU think is important. You people have the greatest sense of humor on the planet, let it out on your video. You can make the audience laugh and cry at the same time, just like we do on this board. Just be the wild and crazy people that you are and it will all shine through. I have made great contacts in this town the last 12 years and there are people that will bend over back wards to get in on this. This is not a dry medical treatise, this is about our LIVES, human, personal, giving pain a face. Film your children talking about how they feel when you are in an attack, film your wife talking about the effect this has on a relationship. Set your camera on a tripod and film one of your attacks. Think outside the box. This is unique and groundbreaking so anything goes. Put your teeth in and talk about anger, from the heart, let it flow. People watching this will be mesmerized, astounded that this has been going on and they have never even heard of it. Everyone has a story—tell it! No one can tell our story like we can. I have never felt so sure of anything before. It will happen. Let’s go do it. David J.

Aki Peterson made a 1/2 program last year (he works for a TV station in NY). It aired on his local net. We showed it at the Vancouver convention. The idea came up to put it on CD and send it to neurologists. Doc Robinson counseled us that we would be wasting our time becasue no neurologist is going to take the time to watch it. He suggested instead that we would more attention if we had a short, concise printed material to give them. Not saying no to your idea, just don't count on the medical community to be interested. So that leaves the general public. What do you expect to accomplish by them seeing it?

Hey Bob P, I’m on drugs J. You guys are my reality check (there’s just too much reality right now). I just got 31/2 hrs. of pain free sleep and I read things that I wrote in a different light. However, I thought the Visual Media show being talked about was also geared to the General Public, to raise awareness, I doubt that it would change a neurologist’s view either. My ideas are all over the place, as in stream of unconsciousness. But, my final thoughts are that Hollywood pays big bucks for Anna Nicole Smith to lay around the house and labels it Reality Television, and it says nothing to the human experience. Besides raising awareness, our CH Video Quilt, could raise (believe me, I talk to Industry people continually, who want to spend money) lots of money for O.U.C.H. (unless money is not needed) which in turn, could educate the medical community in more conventional ways. The visual medium of television is powerful and all pervading, but the only video I have ever seen on this was your interview, from the link on your site (good job, too) I’ve seen nothing else. Half hour video’s shown on the local net. Are not going to cut it as you point out. This is way too little exposure for what we are going through. The other aspect, is to just do something constructive and edifying other than sitting around helpless, bitching about the medical community and taking pot shots at each other on this board. If we are truly a family, I think each of us would kill to see Jonny or Mr. Happy or yourself on a quirky home video. We can pull together in a synergistic way and our Whole can become greater than the sum of our parts. If we made no money off of this (and I have no doubt that we could, our stories are the essence of human strugle) each person who makes their own video, will receive a rewarding growth experience and no doubt learn volumes about themselves and those around them. Water without movement becomes stagnant, let’s become the babbling brook (I’ve certainly got the babbling down) and keep refreshing ourselves. Thanks again, for being the voice of reason, but don’t let reason become the sword of defeat. David J.

BTW....my *vintage* wine has threads on the neck---the vin ordinaire has a rag stuffed in it...... ;D

BOB P. I think some Neurologist would watch, not trying to prove the good doctor wrong. But , If A doc. could use A CD as A tool to educate Would it not be even better accepted? I'm wondering of the cost of A project like this. Great Idea! David J, If you have the stroke to get it done that is half the battle. With Mr. Happy along how can you go wrong? David

Hi kids, I had a tough Saturday night at work (over 625 dinners) ending with a computer crash as we were closing out, AND I’m on drugs, AND the little red dots showing up on my legs was not an allergic reaction to my new Zomig ZMT 5mg. (thank God), but a flea infestation that magicly appeared out of nowhere, had to be dealt with, AND I’m running on 3 ½ hr’s sleep in the last…Blah…Blah…Blah. Give me about 1-1 ½ hours and I’m going to post big time. I can’t tell you how cool it was to finally get to the computer and read your replies. I knew the real wacko’s would climb aboard!! Check back then and I will lay out some great stuff. Soon, David J.

I live on a ranch outside of a town of about 100,000. I am friends with the general manager of the local NBC station. I'm working on just getting a local reporter to do a short spot on ch. I thought it might help, even just locally, since the neuro's here is town couldn't diagnose the attacks. My local GP did the diagnoses herself...by calling an out-of-town neuro, at night and on her own time. (She really impressed my with that one.) I was just hoping to maybe, educate the local village idiots. Roxy

Ted, I got messages from the board that said you were a little slow on the uptake, but dude, I had no idea that you were so bad off. My mom died of Alzhiemers, so you have all my best wishes. The item you were so interested in, was posted at 3:32 pm, sorry that you couldn’t find it in 7 ½ hours. I hope you have a close friend or family member, aware of your condition, that could find this “needle in a haystack” and read it to you. Keep a dictionary handy, there are a few words over 3 syllables. You wrote to me: Quote:Or, at the very least stop talking in fucking cliches. There is nothing as boring as that. |

Hey johnny ;D me again. Just did the dances with wolves for 10 weeks again. When it started there were many wolves. They seemed to get larger in numbers, and they kept getting angrier. I brought a few friends out to watch my back. I brought Preddy Nisone, I think you know him. Another good buddy of mine came with me, you know her as Vera Pamil. My strongest pal didn't show up this time, he's a long skinny guy by the name I. Mitrexinjection. Couldn't find him nowhere. I found out later that his momma, Cigna, wouldn't let him come out and play. I got scared, w/o I. Mitrexinjections we would surely lose this fight. Well, lookee here son. dem der' wolfes didn't scare us. We fought and lost fought and lost fought and lost. But lookee here, we kept fighting till those darn vargrants would't fight no more. Them der' wolves stopped coming with all the numbers, and then we fought, we lost. Then we fought, we lost again, But then we fought, and gosh darn it, we lost. But each time we fought back, we gained a little of their ground. We let 'dem little fuckers beat us on our head till they was good and gosh darn tired!! Then they left. All of those little fuckers ran away like little girls. All at once. I don't miss 'em. And I know that they'll be back, you just gotta know how to fight em, like me. When they come back, I'll have my head in much better condition for the beating. I definately have to work on my dancing though. I'm done, buddy How are you? Still chronic??? You are the King because none of us handle the episodic phase, and we all bitch like little whiny babies. Much Respect. After your last message, I hope you didn't use any astro glide on tonight's turkey, did you? If you did, I don't want any leftovers, and in fact, you can now have my lesbian poster of Bea Arthur and the mom. It's just not the same since I shared it with you guys, it feels tainted. Plus, my wife said if I don't get rid of it, she will no longer be interested in twosomes if you know what I mean. It's yours brother. Take it easy, keep the chin up, and fuck em all.
