Hello, My name is Matt. I am 30 years old and have been a Ch suffer for going on 10 years and being new to this site I have seen so much on the injections and was wondering if anyone else has problems with them. .They usually always work for me but half to time I deal with the Demon in other ways cause after I take a injection it knocks me on my butt and I'm hung over for day's so bad I can't go to work (Fuction period). Then I have to deal in other ways when I get smacked out of bed...I'm quite sick of it . Anyway thanks for this site that I can ramble on.

Hi and welcome Matt, although sorry you have to be here Soon you shall see that ch is so varied in how it affects everyone....amd meds do too I too use imitrex injections......so far they always work.....and I too like you are knocked on my butt by them......but alas, it is at least without the pain. I am episodic, glad not to be chronic. My cycle usually lasts anywhere from 4 - 6 weeks. And I to am just about totally UNFUNCTIONAL during that time. I do not work outside of the home, therefore I truly understand how tough it must be for you to function as you must. Perhaps others here can help you with that. I am blessed to have a wonderful supportive family, both immediate and extended who know what I go through and understand that during that time......I am GOOD FOR NOTHING. My days are spent lying about, avoiding sleep, eating as little as possible cuz I'm not really hungry anyway.......and showing and asking everyone about me how and what to do to make sure that meanwhile, every one else around has what they need. Been that way for better than 25 yrs now, so it's just become a "way of living" hoping you find that "way" for yourself real soon. Wishing you the best of luck, and rest assured more responses are to follow. Keep us posted on your progress, EDNA

Matt and Edna.... Do you guys have high blood pressure? I can't imagine being knocked on my butt by imitrex. I do hurt really bad in my throat and glands when I take an injection for about 5 minutes as the med is absorbed, but afterwords, I have no effects. I have taken as many as 3 injections in an hour and a half. I know medicine effects everybody different but if you are having side effects that long, I would definately talk to your prescribing physician. The injections cerainly work best for me, but the nasal spray works about 80 % and I don't have the gland pain....the pills are worthless.....perhaps you could try the nasal instead of the injection. Furthermore, there is info on the site about using less injection and saving it......not the safest thing to do from an infection stand point, but perhaps a full injection is too much med for you...... Don't pretend that this side effect will go away.....you could be harming yourself in ways you don't anticipate.

Hi Matt, I too am one of the lucky ones that the Imitrex injections always work for. I don't go anywhere without them. You might try reading the Imitrex tip on the left hand side of the board. I began using the tip out of necessity. My insurance company limits the amount of Imitrex I can have so I now use 1/3 of an injection at a time. It still works just as well for me but it takes a few minutes longer. I was nervous about trying it because I didn't know if it would still work, but it does, at least for me. Just a suggestion. Maybe it wouldn't have quite as bad an after affect for you. Good Luck! Jan

Hi, no I do not have high blood pressure, although I'm pretty sure it's threw the roof when I'm freakin out in the middle of the night, the injections just don't agree with something in me ,it's like I drank a keg of beer and a bottle of Jack.I also understand it's the price to pay for me but that injection doesn't pay my bill's or feed my family that's why half the time I have to deal with the Demon in other way's that don't alway's work. And like many others I'm constantly trying to figure out a way to beat these things.

Hey Matt - we ALL feel your frustration with meds - just in a variety of ways. I do not feel out of sorts after an injection, but it's usually into my 3rd, 4th or 5th month of my cycle - too many meds not working in my system along with all the abortives that doesn't make for my brain to be "all together." I will continue to take my injections since that's one of the few very abortives that work so quickly for me. Have you tried any of the Imitrex pills, Maxalt or Zomig as abortives. They make me tired, but after a few doses, I can actually stay awake - I guess I've built up some tolerance to them. What about O2 - have you tried that? It won't make you sleepy at all - except for that warm fuzzy feeling of being totally pain free! Keep us posted.... NotH20

While I have only suffered one cycle (four months long) I noticed that it worked better for me to use O2 when I got hit and it wasn't a real banger. So if I was awake I tended to use the O2 rather than an Imitrex shot; but when wakened in the middle of the night in the full throws I used the injection. This worked real well for me. I had tried the shots for the smaller headaches and it did seem to knock me on my butt ... so I decided anything that wasn't major I didn't waste a shot on. I always used the full shot. Never tried the tip on the left. I was one of the lucky ones that had enough Imitrex to last me through my cycle once I got it !!!!! I did go the first 60 days without it and believe me, I never want a repeat performance of that hell !!!!! Pain free for 16 days and loving it. Hope your turn comes soon !!! Good luck to ya !!!

thanks for the advice Revdeford, I do have high blood pressure and am on watch by my doc with the meds I am on. Thinking my meaning of "knocked on my butt" is not quite the same as Matt........not a feeling of after drinking per say, more like drained, no energy left and after each and every shot it's hit the bed to lay down for me. During my last cycle is when I found this place, so I have many things to look into when it is time for my next visit.....mainly being getting to my doc for some 02 and trying that......also, my insurance has sent me imitrex vials of the medicine that I will fill myself......so at the end of my last cycle I was using only 1/3 of the amount of a stat dose and the same relief was found.......this was only for about 2 hits tough, so not quite sure if it will work as well throughout a cycle thanks again, it shows you care, EDNA

The injection works for me every time, but I always feel a bit wierd for a while after taking it. I get "flutters and palpatations" in the chest as the arteries "shrink" a bit from the medication. When I first started them back in 1995 this feeling was a but scarey and it may be the cause of some distress which makes it feel worse. Now I just take the shot now and then relax and try and lie down for 15-30 mins and then feel ok but a little tired. I would trade this feeling for the CH any day! My main worry is always having enough shots left so I store them up during cluster free periods so I have enough when I need them. I posted some stuff a while back on a safer way of using a smaller dose involving using several injector pens which I cut down the length of the "firing pin" to give smaller shot. This method worked for me if I taook the inj as soon as I feel the "CH aura" starting or as soon as it wakes me up. You can send me a personal message if you want exact details.

Welcome to the board! Sorry that the beast is forcing your cranium into a blender to make his favorite drink, the Clusterhead Cocktail. Good luck! PFDAN.......................... Drk^Angel PS... Trex inj made my head feel like it was about ready to explode for about an hour after injection, and didn't really help with the beast. C'est la vie... DA

Matt, I also break down the imitrex injections into 3 separate ones and the less amount works just as well. I put them into insulin syringes which you can buy in most states without a prescription. Chris L

HI Matt....hoping this may help a bit. to your left is a button labeled "Imitrex Tip" while this is meant as a way of preserving your expensive necessity because of insurance purposes, it may be useful to you. My theory.....use that method to lower your dosage a bit maybe that will help. If not , then my only advice is to force yourself to get up and get moving....when this cycle started for me and I began the injectible Imitrex regimen like so many of us before me , I too, and occasionaly still do, experience the afterglow of the injection the next morning. My wife Forced me to get up and move around, get something to eat, and go to work. Believe it or not it worked , at least for me. Oxygen also seems to help quell the "Imitrex hangover" that I feel in the morning. Best suggestion.....get a good strong pot of coffee and get your butt outta bed and move man, sometimes its all I CAN do. Hang in there Cerebus

Imitrex is also avaliable in single use vials which make metering the dose much easier than modifing the STATdose pen. Just use standard U-100 insulin syringe. Good Luck, Mark "IMITREX pre-filled syringes are available for those who would prefer to self-inject without the autoinject device (please ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details)." http://www.migrainehelp.com/multi_symptom/injection.html
