Headache Switching Sides?
« on: Oct 17th, 2002, 1:14pm »

Hi. I'm new here though have had CH off and on for about 10 years. I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this, or if I am on drugs.

In all previous cycles, the pain has always been on the right side of my head. In the past week of this (now 4 week cycle), the pain has switched to the left side. So now I'm having a right side headache at night and a left side headache during the day.

Just curious. Thanks much and sorry for the half-written post right before this one...accidentally hit return button before finishing typing.

I predict that the know-it-alls will respond to this post stating that you can't possibly have CH.  Keep your chin up.  I believe it's possible, although indeed rare, for that to happen.  But then again... My brain is still on vacation.  Good luck!

When I was episodic the CH was on my left side.  This went on  for thirteen years.  Then, five years ago I became chronic and the CH switched to my right side.

Here is what that know-it-all, Dr. Peter Goadsby says of this:

"The attacks are strictly unilateral, although the headache may alternate sides. The pain is excruciatingly severe. It is located mainly around the orbital and temporal regions, although any part of the head can be affected. The headache usually lasts 45 to 90 minutes but can range from 15 minutes to three hours. It has an abrupt onset and cessation."

So, it is possible for clusters to switch sides but it is not possible to have it on both sides of the head AT THE SAME TIME, since clusters are "strictly" unilateral.

I certainly don't "know-it-all" in fact, I know nothing of any importance, but I do know that my HA's switch sides all the time and have for 15 yrs.  Linda Howell

Hi Xlagoon,

Yep, entirely possible for it to switch sides.  In my husband's experience it's common for one entire cycle of clusters to be on one side, and then in the next cycle for it to be on the other side, although he's also had cycles that have switched from right to left.  Bob's post really explains it well.  As he said, though - it can ONLY be on one side at a time.

Sorry to hear you're getting hit, stick around and read everything you can.  Lots of good stuff in our library and archives.  Welcome to the madness.

I am shocked and astounded, and obviously wrong.  I thought for sure someone was going to argue that a clusterhead can't have the beast on both sides during the same cycle.  I must applaud the fact that some ppl were more progressive than I had estimated.

Wine?  Did someone say wine? ;D Love some....errr, anyway, umm, yep, switchin sides is not unheard of.....happened to me too couple of times.   Last cycle it only happened once or twice and was not intense.  happened at the end of the cycle.  I was able to take over the counter and it blipped off.   Can remember this happening in the past in a more intense version.  What does this mean?  I dunno. ;D

All previous cycles, left side only. This cycle, started with left. Then some ha's would start in right then swich to left, Then right side only. DRK showed me a link that explained this and some of my other strange symptoms as Cluster-Migraine syndrome.     PJB

Darn. How many do you have? It seems to fall a lot. Not very sanitary, I'd say.
And how do you re-attach it?  ???

Switching sides? Hot damn! Something to look forward to instead of the same 'ol side all the time...
I can have bets with myself, wondering where it'll hit next. Break up the monotony, y'know?
