Things that work for "me" to some varying degree. Some of this was derived from this site, some is common sense and some is personal experience. Take all with a grain of salt. 1. Water/Fruit Juice. 4-6 quarts/day. I'm 6' tall, 185 pounds. 2. Ice. Applied to face and temple area for extended period. 15 minutes or more. 3. Coffee. Strong and hot. Keep it coming when in pain. Back to water/juice when not. 4. Not touching it where it hurts. Works as good or better than ice. 5. Chewing food. Only during lower level pain. 6. Laughing. Works for everything bad. Find a way if you can. 7. Positive thinking. I know how hard it must be after a certain point. Try. 8. Petting my cat Otis. Kitty good. 9. Singing. When the pain caused me to make noises, I tried to make a song with them. 10. Dancing. We all know this one. Make a game out of it. Distract yourself from it's real purpose. Make patterns, do math, step only on the black tiles...whatever. 11. Thinking/manipulating your blood into your extremities. Keep your feet and hands down below. Let gravity help you. 12. Low light levels. I turned the brightness on my monitor down to 0 and the contrast as low as I could and still be able to read text. I keep my torchier halogen lamp at about the equivalent of a 15 watt incandescant. Roughly=to 5 little nightlites. It's off out of my periphreal vision and pointed at the ceiling. No glare! In pain I add sunglasses to that setup. A makeshift patch covers the affected eye at times. I like my computer! 13. No bells, whistles or similar piercing sounds. The cordless phone in my living room could lift me 6 inches off the ground if it rang while I was having an attack. Bye bye phone. Ask for earplugs or headphones if getting a Cat Scan or MRI. Trust me. They give you a panic button if you forget. 14. Breathing from the diaphragm. Sit up straight and do it. 15. Adjusting the vertabrae in my neck and back. I can crack every joint in my body. I've been doing it for 20 years. Don't try this yourself if you don't know how! See a reputable chiropractor. Cracking the 1st few vertabrae below the skull feels just so god damn good. 16. Stretching/keeping limber. Should probably precede 15. 17. Eat. You will lose the ability to fight if you don't. 18. Sleep. Yeah right! Time to stfu now! -----------------collapse----------------- The power of suggestion is stronger than I thought. It's now 12 hours since I started typing this. The last hour was spent dancing around my basement office. Not with the Devil though! Today I got 6+ hours sleep ending with dreaming (not nightmares) and a pain free awakening. I have not medicated since 5:00 am. I feel absolutely reborn. I've got the lights turned up as is my stereo. I'm playing Rage Against the Machine real loud and getting my funk on big-time. You should see my Einstein hair-do as I shake my ass around the room like a retard in my pajamas. The grin on my face is 5 miles wide. Thanks for being here! Nice to meet you. PAIN FREE DAYS FOREVER! anvil

Sorry if my post is too long or disjointed. I wasn't even going to post it at first but I haven't had this kind of relief for this long in 5 weeks. It's just my story and I am still ecstatic for my current state of being whether it lasts or not. I understand there could be many reasons for my not having pain right now. I am not suggesting anything to anyone regarding treatment. Just laying it all out there in hopes it helps someone. Anyone. Even me. My utmost sympathy to all who aren't doing well. Truly.

| Hey thanks for that. With no doctors and no meds at all I can use every bit of info I can get. This coffee thing I'm assuming it's the caffeine? So would expresso and other stronger coffees work better?

BIG posts and they are long but there are some good things there. I especially the first part of number 11. It's about the same thing as the circulatory technique. How about breaking up these things......whew. Charlie

LTBullitt, Now your talking, I found that coffee greatly helped Imitrex to work but othe cafinated drinks didn't help. Must be in the beans, I bet expresso will help greatly. PJB

Sorry to take the wind out of your sail Slammy   FTR I am both literally and figuratively thick skinned. I am for real though guys. I'll try to keep my sense of humor about me I apologize for the un web-friendly first postings. I promise to keep it short(er) from now on. This is all new ground to me. CH, Forums (fori?), support groups. Charlie-I think it was your post about circulation technique that got me thinking down that path. Thanks man. It made me more aware of how much posture can affect one's pain too. I try to keep my head up in the air, not cross or raise my legs or arms and not put pressure on my neck or upper back. I have to try to remember when I get this tired. I wonder if sleeping in a bed with the headboard end raised would help? I still like the punching bag too ;D LTBullitt-I am unsure if delivery method matters for caffeine. Almost certainly the active property in coffee, expresso, cappacino etc. I know I like coffee. Alot! I was advised to drink it by both specialists I saw. Cox3406-Thanks. I used 200mg/day Imitrex oral. It was pushing my heart to hard though. I've switched to 50mg tabs so I can have more room to adjust dosage. Luckily I still have the pld 25mg scrip too. Very cool. Very lucky. Thanks for listening to my babbling howdy do folks.

My technique seems to me like an internal "shove." I don't understand why more here don't have the kind of luck I did. It worked me that afternoon. I was sitting at a bar...one of those 1970s places with roast beef on the bar, too much dark wood and full of Michelob signs. ( pre-yuppie) and got hit. The place wasn't busy and I found a booth way in the back, and asked them to let me alone. My 20 minute attack lasted less than ten. I could never thank Dr. Wright enough. Take care. Charlie

So I still waiting to get flamed so that I can feel like real family here, Do what ever it takes to be PF.

Anvil, welcome aboard. If ya want some flames suggest they post this in a new board called newbie tricks then drop flop and roll, the poop will come your way. Seriously, I would like to know how you accomplish number 15. You don't know how much I would like to pop my neck during an attack. Seen chiro during episode before but 10 copay per pop gets old. And the next time you get an attack let me i've got some math homework to send your way. Curtis

Anvil- did I understand correctly? You are taking Imitrex twice a day whether or not you are having an attack at the time? Just want to clear up what I thought I read. Welcome to the board and I hope you find more PF days and nights domm

Domm-To clarify...I was until yesterday having no less than 4 and usually 6 attacks a day. I was recently medicating the one in mid-morning and the bitch @2:00am with 100mg tabs Imitrex. I asked my doctor to switch me to 50mg tabs so I could abort more attacks and cool it in my ticker a little. I am told I can take 300mg total in a 24 hour period now. I don't like needles. Even the the futuristic one that Imitrex has. Thank you oringkid and Peppermint. Hope you are all well.

Anvil - thanks for the clarification. I use 50 mg trex as an abortive, along with Oxygen. The O2 (when used properly) will knock out the CH (for me) within 5 to 10 minutes. Then the trex seems to finish the process and eliminate the shadows as well. I have used O2 alone and it is very effective with zero side effects. At the peak of my cycle, I found too much trex (for me - more than 4 a day) was leaving me feeling drugged up and perhaps with a low grade headache. I am using Verapamil now as a preventative and its working very well. I'm now around 2+ weeks without a CH. I haven't had to use any trex or O2. Read up on Verapamil and the other preventatives over on the OUCH site or here under medical info - both buttons on the left. I am sure one of these will work for you. Good luck and PF days and nights to you domm

Just to be perfectly clear, Imitrex in any dose has an immense impact on my pain. I have a very fast metabolism. It takes about 20-22 minutes for the effect of the drug to occur with me. During that time I employ, breathing from the diaphragm, good posture if possible and some form of psychological element. I do not like being controlled much less at the mercy of something. I keep the attitude that I am stronger than "It". If I stay distracted by something I can manage to keep things to a dull roar now. Even kiss the pain goodbye for a couple hours or more. I hope I can maintain that optimism. I believe it is very important.
