Hi Y’all…
I have been watching, reading and learning a-lot about CH on this board. I was fighting an “unknown” enemy from 1997 to the summer of 2002 when I finally was diagnosed with CH. I am a “periodic” and usually get hit once a year – lasting for up to two months.
I have learned that “qualification” is pretty important here, so here it goes; I get the pains on the right side, first sign is that the base of my right nostril feels like it is on fire – from there, the area around my right eye hurts, my right temple becomes a “loosing battle ground” of pain. My right eye closing – tears streaming, sweating so bad that my hair (what’s left) is dripping – I drink coffee (since that is the only thing that takes my mind of the pain) HOT coffee that sometimes blister my lips – two large 7-11 cups usually does it. This is “controversial” but I do believe that the coffee is a mental “support unit” – let me explain that… Since 1997 (when I first got hit) the Dr’s told me that I had sinus problems – since they could not fix it, in my mind, I figured that I needed heat and moisture – so I made and drank coffee LOTS OF IT. It seemed to help so I continued and I have not dared to see what would happen if I did not drink the coffee when getting hit. My attacks usually lasts 40 minutes – When in cycle, (this feels stupid – it’s like preaching to the choir) I do not dare to sleep – I only fall asleep from exhaustion trying so hard not to fall asleep – After my third nightly attack, I can usually get up to three hours of sleep.
I cycled out in July, two days after I was diagnosed at the ER. I was enrolled in a Headache Management Program and was given Imitrex, Oxygen and Verapamil – only thing is, I had cycled out by the time that I got the medication so I am waiting for my next “round” to see if they work on me.
Regrets… I am usually the most “self-controlled” and even-tempered person you could ever come across. CH takes that control away from me – I get nasty and ill-tempered and part of the blame is my own ignorance. For 5 years, I did not know that CH was causing this pain – I thought that it could be anything from a brain tumor to allergies. I know that in part, CH caused my marriage to fail – my Son was hurting – my wife was bitching etc… They did not understand (not their fault) and I could not explain why I acted the way I did. In May of this year I started my cycle, I had a girl friend that I liked very much. My attacks scared her so bad… Once again, I could not explain what the problem was so instead I broke up with her – it was better for both of us if I dealt with it alone…
Today, I am diagnosed with CH. I have found this web-site, learned a lot and I feel “ready” face my next cycle – not as ignorant and knowing that it will not kill me, only make me stronger…

I have no idea what happened to the text in my original post (some code seem to have slipped its way in) I typed the message in Word and did a copy & paste when I posted it - probably the wrong way to do it. I hope that you can make it out...

I figured it out. I wrote it in Word and copied the text (being lazy) - the alien numbers are from me trying to put " " and - in the text.

Marty - sorry to hear of your diagnoses, but glad you found us. Start pushing button. Tons of info here and at OUCH. You'll also find a family who understands what you're going through, because we've all been there.
Good luck finding the right set of meds. The ones you mentioned are all good ones and work for me.

Welcome to the Zoo. I have made the same mistake typing a post in word and then cutting and pasting. You can correct this before posting by doing a "preview post" and editing out all the #$%^# gobbedly goop. Or you can just post it as is ... we'll get the message. Glad to hear you cycle has ended. The meds that were perscribed to you are what I use and they work pretty well for me. Good luck with the next cycle. Stick around, enjoy the animals !!!!!!! Marty, I must be really out of it becouse I thought you were inserting special diagnoses code to discribe you pain. I found that writing a post in netscape mail then copy and pasting does a better job. Isn't it amazing how when you finally get what you have been wanting the beast gets scared and leaves. By the way you can still go back and edit your post but I kind of like it the way it is.
