Hello, hi, whats up to everyone that is in this forum. Just a little explanation of why i am here, about 3 years ago i woke up to my first sign of pain. At the time i was living alone, not to resourceful, and in the military. I woke up with a headache that i had never felt before, kinda caught me real off gaurd. Since then, ive felt what "I" often refer to as, my personal devil. Since then, my cycles have been about 3 months on, and about 4 months off, varying at times. I would always try different things, not ever hearing of cluster headaches, ie-always taking NyQuil, Tylenol PM, and so on, but that just made life worse cuz i would still be tired, have a cluster, and have nyquil hangovers. Come this past January, about 2 years after I had my first, my fiance made me go to the doctor, since she had seen me do everything from bash my head on the wall, stick my head under the couch, or even want to shoot myself. Thats when my doctor told me i suffered from Cluster headaches. She gave me first, Imitrex. (i dont remember the mg).. That didnt work out too good, it would work for me about 1/3 of the time. Then i went back and was prescribed Darvacet. That had about a 2/3 chance of working with me it seemed, and now after changing jobs, are without any kind of medicine at all, and mid-cycle, not liking life. All in all, i wanted to explain my story, and say hello to everyone here, i will be visiting here quite often.

Welcome aboard. The Imitrex shots and O2 are what I use as abortives. Verapamil as a preventative. These seem pretty common for the folks here. The Imitrex shots are WAY better than the pills or the nasal spray. Hope you find something that works for you. Read around ... lots of good advice can be found in the old posts.

Brian - welcome, but I'm sorry you had to find us. Read, Read, read. this site and OUCH. I use exactly what Nancy described, except I use the Imitrex pills. The Verapamil had kept me PF for 12-13 days now. Print this stuff out and take it to your doc. Most times, you have to educate them. Good luck and welcome domm

Welcome Brian: Believe it or not, if you continue to read the site and the archives, you will find something here to help in some fashion. Most of us come here for that and we usually something new. Keep in touch and let us know how things are going Charlie

Welcome to the board! Sorry that the beast has a rusty, white hot egg beater, slowly beatin' your cranium into a disgusting, bloody heap of organic material, then cooking it in a 750 degree oven for 2 to 3 hours at a time. It's the beast's specialty. Welcome to the family! PFDAN............................... Drk^Angel

BrianKan, First welcome, and I am sorry you needed to search for us. It is so horrible when one finds themselves confronted with this pain - you think you're dying - I did, and I've had these fuckers for 24 years now, albeit with some time off for good behavior... What has worked for me (in the order presented here - if I go one, they failed to continue working): antihistamines, verapamil alone, verapamil with lithium - 1200 mgs/day/sides, now, verapamil with catapres .4 mgs./day. Oh yes, and O2 intermittently helped but not always... I am also one of the few people in this MB that thanks GOD for narcotics when I have a CH out of control - no, and I am not addicted to them - but whether they mask the pain or otherwise, I am relieved the medical community has something that relieves the pain for me when all else fails - key words to NOT becoming addicted -when ALL ELSE FAILS. I am episodic, apparently like you, but the pain when in cycle is literally indescribable and I shall not attempt... My neuro won't let me use imitrex yet becasue of some family history and some of my own medical issues, so maybe I'm not in the same boat as otherss, although I do have some Amerge that I have yet to try (because of late, the catapres/verapamil combo is working pretty good). Good luck to you and wishing you PF times ahead - Jim R
