Hi I'm MaryD,
I too have weaned off my medication of Topamax and started melatonin as soon as I got off the plane Sunday night from the convention. I'v Been taking 9mg for 7 days but still having problems sleeping.  I was wondering if I could go up to 12 mg or more without hurting myself.  My  headaches are more intense but I want to give melatonin a good 6 months to work ..........  I'm don't have Clusterheadaches but Sunct Syndrome which means I have 40 or more small hits a day that last from seconds to 15 minutes, and yes I still have a bad cycle that comes in Feb through April..that are just like clusterheads  The bad news is there no know med out there that works.  Topamax just help control the intense of the headaches.   I'm thinking of going up to 12mg  melatonin this week...  The bottle doesn't give me any control  direction in number of pills to take per night.

Mary:  I'm glad you asked.  If you recall from my presentation, one study reported on using melatonin for clusters, migraines and chronic tension headaches.  No mention of SUNCT.  Sorry to say this, but I don't recall coming across any studies regarding SUNCT and melatonin, therefore it may not be wise to use melatonin in your case.  Sorry, but I hope you find something that works for you.

9 or 12 mg is way too much to be used for sleep therapy.

I'll check tomorrow at my office and see if I can find any other info.  Until then, I wouldn't recommend it, but please re-read the disclaimer I put on the last page.
Regards

Thank you Dr. DougW,
But I tried it at 12mg last night and awoke at 3:45 with cluster like headaches.  Wasn't able to get back to sleep until 5am.  Won't be taking melatonin anymore under your suggestion.  I just wonder how low my melatonin levels really are now?  I'll have to talk to Dr. Kudrow about it. I will be weaning myself off the melatonin  I know that much about it.   Didn't want you to worry since I'v been taking 9mg for a week.
         MaryD Thanks again

Mary D, Doug and anyone else interested:
I had been reporting day by day on my use of 9mg of melatonin. I will probably switch now to weekly reports as things have seemed for the moment to level out.
Since starting the melatonin on the 17th of September, there have been three significant changes:
 1. I've gone from an average of 3 hours sleep per night to about 6 hours.
 2. I'm starting to dream, and even recall many.
 3. Goes along with 2 ... apparently, I can now sleep through REM without waking to an attack.

Although there has been no significant changes in pain or attacks (except for REM attacks), I believe the extra sleep is a positive as far as the mental battle with the Beast, I have a little more strength.
Because I also suffer from anxiety disorder and have been on Xanax for years, I've been wanting to get off Xanax because of its highly addictive traits. I was given a "Starter Kit" for Zoloft. Because of the high serotonin information associated with Zoloft, I've been researching the comparisions of melatonin and serotonin. After a couple posts, I mentioned the dreaming, and in my searches I accidentally came across a site that deals directly with the relationship of melatonin and dreams. Since REM sleep tends to be a trigger for Cluster attacks, I found this site very interesting. You may want to check it out, it has a survey, and links to other melatonin information.
 Best of luck Mary,
 Dave
