Preventatives prevent pain, abortives try to take care of pain one already has.  I think the choice is obvious...

For me preventatives are best, but seem not always effective for this ailment...so abortives are the second line of defense.  I've been fortunate enough to have found something that works for me as a preventative and it's great.  When I was finally diagnosed, my neuro told me it was good news/bad news-she knew what I had but "no known cause, no known cure."  Sometimes the preventative/abortive issue seems out of your control. It would seem that if you find a preventative that works, you won't need abortives as much, so it'd be obvious which is better... Both.
