How does your Doctor treat you?

How do you feel after you have just had a visit with him/her? I wanted to get some responses so I could show them to my Doctor...I dont think Doctors know what it feels like to have chs sometimes...my Doctor is compassionate but I have to remember that he really does not know what it is like to have chs...I know alot of times though when i leave his office, I feel alone with these things....and that is when i have to remember he does not know what my pain really is..He does not understand the isolation that comes with them..the depression, the fighting to stay active in life. . I have had Doctors that thought it was all in my head,that i was just a woman with a headache, that the pain could not really be that bad...So tell me, how you feel about the way you are treated by your Doctor... ;Dnancyc

All my Gps knew what CH was and sent me to neurologists. Only one was bad. Sadly this neuro-surgeon is still barbering. His idea was to do exploratory surgery to determine if I had a tumor causing pain. If I hadn't had experience with these characters because of my epilepsy, I'd have had him hacking away at my spongy grey matter.
I've had good luck for the most part but then they treat me well because of my epilepsy. We have a "real" disease so I'm probably an aberration.

I don't have a 'neuro' to speak of...I've seen 3 different ones, and not one of them could agree on what I have. The one I saw last week insists clusters are just a variation of migraines, and doesn't believe they are a category by themselves. I don't think I need to say how I felt after I left his office.
As for my GP she's fabulous, as a general rule she is one of the most caring and compassionate doctors I've ever met, she actually listens to what you are saying, but like you nancy, I often come away feeling alone and frustrated because she doesn't know what to do for me and I didn't know what to do for me either. This site has helped that, however, the medications are still a problem.
I read your post and started crying because I do feel alone when I leave the Dr's office, and I'm used to having Clark around to cry on his shoulder or sound off to, and now I really do feel like I'm alone to deal with this because no one understands the level of pain, no one has seen me during an attack, I'm a private person, so none of my close friends here (all 2 of them) have ever seen me during an attack so all I have is this board and the family I've found here.

I was originally diagnosed by a family practioner - fabulous, compassionate doc. My current family practitioner is an ASS but the two (male) nurse practitioners in with him are decent and my neuro is decent and caring and willing to try a variety of different drugs (unfortunately none of them have worked this year so far). I think my neuro understands the pain. The pain is absolute agony and I am being overwhelmed by it and am going into depression over it. I am going into myself. My wife and kids try to help but not knowing the level of the pain, it is hard for them to empathize with me. Hope it ends real soon. Jim R

Hi Nancy. I hope you are doing okay. The neurologist I currently see seems knowledgeable to me. So in general I trust him, but some things he says kinda hint that he is not God-like in his knowledge and treatment of CH. But at least he is one of the most caring and open doctors I've ever visited. I think I know what you mean though... when I leave the office I still feel lonely knowing that he does not truly know what CH is like. Sometimes I feel empty when I leave because I know that there isn't really much he can do for me that I don't already know about. It will be interesting to see how he reacts during my next visit when I tell him I've stopped all government drugs except for O2. Some docs don't take it well when you give up on thier treatment regiment, but this doc seems good and is rather open-minded. I'm sure glad I fired the neurologist I saw before this one.

Dear Nancy,
I have gotten very lucky with both doctors I have used. The first one was Dr. Rapoport and his staff at the New England Center for Headaches in CT back in the 70-80's. They were the only people who understood what I was going through and helped me emotionally as well as medically.
Now that I live in Maine and my CH's have returned I didn't know exactly where to turn. I printed out all the info I could find and took it to my GP. I told her she could refer me to a Neuro or HA Center but I would prefer if she would deal with me as I really like and admire her. She was thrilled with the information and happy to help. She is a great lady with no ego or hidden agenda and has been completely supportive and compassionate. She is a single Mom who has adopted 4 children all with disabilities. She is very cool. As luck would have it also one of her nurses father has CH's so the nursing staff also understand.
I do not feel alone or sad when I leave there. I feel great that there is someone out there to listen and help me. Half the battle won!

overall i'm happy with my doc, he's always willing to try new meds if the current one's aren't workin' anymore, he see's me when i really need to be seen. he tries to understand (he get's migraines) but of course he can't.never thought of gettin' a new doc so i guess that say's it all. ..................2late

I have a real good South African GP who's funny as hell and appreciated all the data I sent him from this board. The bonus is that he's got some hot nurses who work for him. ;D
Then I have our buddy, Dr. Kudrow, who's actually a pretty good guy. 
I would not tolerate an not a very nice person for a doctor.

Miss my old dr. She understood the beast. Finding another good one has been a challenge. Fired the last one for being an not a very nice person. The fun is letting them know they are being fired, they stand there with their mouths open wondering what happened. It's like "hey - I'm the doctor - you can't do that!"
