Since I have not felt anyone else's pain, I'd have to say, I have no idea. There is no way of telling if one person's pain is greater than anothers. One person's kip3 might be anothers kip8. I could never begin to judge whether my pain is worse than others, nor would I want too. I guess it's all in how you perceive your own pain... Mel

Tough question. Pain tolerance is relative to the person that feels it. A kip 5 to one person may be a 9 to another. And sometime the pain may be only minor behind the eye, but gets worse as it spreads outward to the temple, nose and jaw. Also, the kip scale may be different from one cycle to another as can the length of the cycle. I can only speak for myself, smoking has no affect, good or bad, during an attack. Some people swear by exercise to relieve an attack. For me even thinking about it makes it worse. Cluster pain is a very unique pain. It's just "different" than any other pain I have ever felt.

I think not. I've seen too many posts here of someone saying, "I'm sitting at the computer typing with a Kip 10 right now". No fucking way! Absatively no fucking way!

I agree Bob! Shit... If I had anything over a shadow, I wouldn't be sitting over a fuckin keyboard! Why? Because 100% of all my focus would be on trying to get rid of the pain or block the onset of it...... Slammy

I personally don't think everyone's clusters are the same, but without feeling what they feel, I cannot give a definate answer one way or another. PFDAN................. Drk^Angel

The KIP scale was adjusted for me one night last fall when I had my first true KIP-10... my old 10's became 7's... Pain is relative... a KIP6 might be too much to bear one day, because I'm already exhausted... and the same headache when I'm rested and healthy would be more bearable..... Just MHO.... Liz

Sitting at the computer wuith a Kip 10. Possible but the monitor would be airborn from the second story. Key board embedded into the wall. and the scanner would be sanning the ceiling. I get very upset with a Kip 10.

That was a good one Drk. I personally would not be able to sit at the computer with a kip 10. I can with a kip 8, rocking back and forth and with many typos. For me the computer is an escape, it's a distraction I can get lost in, as long as I don't have to think about anything much. If I'm typing with a kip 8, I'm usually in ramble mode, or as hubby calls it verbal diarrhea. Anything at all to distract. The second it goes to a kip 8.1, I can't sit still to be at the puter. Of course, that's only on the laptop, I don't think I could sit at the desktop with a kip 8, no movement ability would make it very hard. Kip 10 on a puter? No Fucking Way. Kip 10's I start looking for tractor trailers to play chicken with. Course now I got me some O2, things might look up a bit Cat

This horror no doubt produces similar pain but we all react differently. I think for many of us it's very localized, intense, with with similar visual facial ,manifestations. The levels no doubt vary. I don't think I'd want to type while having an attack. I couldn't afford the keyboard replacemnets. Charlie

I'm like Cat in that I can type (badly) with Kip 8 and actually seek out distraction by computer for CH's kip 8 and under. I will play word games to try to redirect my attention till it subsides, but over an 8, forget it. I think I've only had maybe 2 kip 10s ever and during them, I really don't think I was even aware of my surroundings at all. EVERYTHING becomes my head. I have NOTHING but the pain. It's like the pain is a super nova and there is nothing but that super nova. I have no awareness of any other part of my body, there is only one incoherent scream in my head. Sherry

| Pain level 8 Time to scream, yell, curse, head bang, rock, whatever work's If you can bang away on a laptop and post with an 8, you're tougher than I am... or you are just a full-blown masochist! Playing chicken with a tractor-trailer ( what's that? ) ? Yep, you just thrive in pain, Cat ;D Slammy

I'm with you Slammy. When I feel that first weird feeling that tells me an attack is coming, I don't do anything from that point on but try to deal with the pain. I'd never think of sitting at the pooter with a Kip anything. I don't get any inbetween in my attacks. They go from 0 to full blown in 5 or ten minutes, last 1/2 hour to 3 hours and then go from full blown to nothing in 2 minutes.

Bob, It seems that we have very similar cycles.... The beast must follow a pattern for us "best coast" CH'ers! When a Kip 8 or higher ends, my head will hurt, but it's like a " hit with a bat" pain. Shit, even my hair hurts after an 8 or higher. But even that is euphoric compared to a full bore cluster. Breathing through both nostrils even seems to be a treat afterwards!   I'm "aware" of the PF time in between CHs when I am in cycle. The funny thing is, when I am in my remission, I can't remember the pain too much..... funny how the mind works to protect you. If it wasn't for this site, I would completely forget about Clusters until the next cycle started. Oh! and my CLUSTERHEADACHES.COm custom bumper sticker from New England yambag buddy, jonnywithnohphilipwithonel. ;D Slammy

Not all pain is the same to all people....but I can assure you that any sign that a cluster is starting I don't want any part of the computer.....I had maybe 2-10's this cycle the first one it was all my hubby could do was to hold me tight because I was going out of my mind and would have destroyed everything in site....it's like you go insaine.....I have a 5 minute warning before I get full blown and when it's over it's like 2 sec. from full blown to nothing but a dull ache and a feeling like I just went 10 rounds with Tyson.....Sami

Slammy and Sammy, Same here. During a cluster period the left side of my head feels bruised or swollen from the previous attacks. Hair hurting - that happens during an attack for me. I start with an ice pack on my eye/temple/top of head. as the attack progresses the ice pack moves away from my head to where I am holding it an inch off my skull. Just hurts too bad to touch anything. This is where I do nothing but sit in my chair, leaning forward and may blowing my nose once in a while (but that hurts too). Nothing I can do but wait and pray that it will end soon. The guy on the home page is right on - when it's over I can feel it just drain away and the feeling of euphoria sets in.

Hair hurting...do you all know how many times I've tried to explain that concept to bystanders? I can't even touch my hair during a HA, let alone my scalp or the side of my face. My hair is waist-length, and I'm thinking of getting a crew-cut just because the weight of it is too much to bear during anything over a shadow. iukid, as a clusterhead who has given birth AND had a ventilator tube hammered into/ripped out of her throat, I can tell you that pain is relative. Some people on this board might be totally flattened by what I call a Kip 10, and I would be crushed into a pool of jelly if I experienced what JimR described in his recent "unrelenting" post. (Needless to say, the general public would run screaming like little girls at the first sign of a cluster of any level.) I think we can only rate our own pain in comparison to other pain we have suffered. I hadn't had a cluster headache for several years when I experienced the aforementioned ventilator tube adventure, and I actually convinced myself that it was more painful than the worst CH. Until this episode, that is. Now the hammering/ripping thing has been demoted to about the equivalent of a Kip 7. It made a really cool noise, though. ;D Kilo
