I Had My Worst Cycle When...

I had my worst cycle when I took the most meds. What prompts this post is that I have been reading how many of you seem to take meds often. This is not meant in any negative way, but more of a query and conern. I kept careful records of my cycles from 1985 to present and it was during my 97 cycle that Imitrex was used three times a week for 10 weeks and that I had the most "10" attacks. During my current cycle I have resisted panic and held off using IM at the first nightly wake up call and often the second call as well. The results have been very very few 10's. I have also cut the IM dosage. So what I am offering others to ponder is there relationship to there meds and its impact on the number and intensity of the attacks. The only other variable that I can account for in my case is my age, which is 60. Some have said that when you get older the Beast seems to mellow. My CH attacks began in my 30's, before IM became a part of my arsenal. Good Luck all in your analysis.

I tend to agree with you. It really looks like the people on the meds have the worst cycles. But that is just my opinion not based on anything but the posts I have seen on this board. So, it could be just a fluke. And I know it isn't all the people either. Sherry

I tend to disagree. Since I found the right amount of Verapamil for me five years ago, I have never gone above a Kip 3 or 4, and that is easily aborted with oxygen. Ueli

For some people I agree, for others I disagree. I am on only O2 right now and celexa and no other meds at all. I get 10's more often than I care to count. Some people are more sensitive to drugs than others so your post is likely true for some, and others are more tolerant and it's not likely true for them There, hows that for fence sitting LOL Cat

finding an effective med at the right dosage can be HELL. sometimes it does seem like meds make worse. But, there is always the possibility you'll finally find that one thing....

I had my worst cycle when I didn't do a friggin thing about my CHs! I think the most effective war I have had on a cycle was when they occured like clockwork at 10am, 2pm, 7pm, and 11pm. The second I felt the tightness coming on, I popped a cafergot and it nuked it before it broke. The tough ones are the ones that come on while I am asleep. By the time I am aware, it is too late for the cafergot abortive. That is where the 02 and the imitrex shot as a last resort comes into play. I was recently prescribed verapamil at 320mG a day by Dr. Kudrow, but my cycle ended before I could find out if they were successful as a preventative for me. I think the only time did the CHs feel worse on meds than off meds was when I was using vicodin and elavil to "mask" the CHs..... That did suck. Slammy

I'm on verapamil 240mgX3/day, and I definately would say my cycle is much easier to deal with. It's suppressing the attacks very well, although today I've had a few breakthrough, but still nothing compared to the attack I was having before starting verapamil. Presently on a break from all preventative meds. Nothing seemed to work any more. Thought I may have built up a tolerance. So far I've been able to manage through. I've had a few carpet crawling head bangers but have been able to cope with -- hate to write it -- stydol ns. For some reason it works, 10 seconds and a 10 becomes tolerable. Feel like shit the next day however. I must be ever mindful of how much I'm taking so it won't get ahold of me like it did in the past.
