Babies have colic for the simple fact that they're pissed at being so forcefully removed from the nice, warm, conforting womb, and made to put up with the cold, bright, frightening world, so they're determined to make you miserable. They figure if they cry every night from dusk to dawn, that you'd be so miserable from lack of sleep, and having to listen to them cry, that they'll be half way to their goal by time the terrible twos start. OK Slammy, Let's see, when babies are growing, we know that the brain growth is first and fastest, from the high content of whatever in breast milk. So, let's say the grey matter in the hypothalamus is over grown in the first few months, then the rest of the body growth takes over for a few years, then around 10-12 yrs old, we start evening out, and the CH's start again. Or for some, later. Just grasping at straws, ya know. Thoughts on this?????? Deb

Ok, let me see if I follow your logic..... A cholic baby has cluster headaches because the hypothalamus is overgrown. Then the rest of the body catches up and the CH goes away... then something happens and then they , what? return? I'm sorry if I sound flippant, it's just that several clinical research-type people spend years trying to figure out where CH's come from, with no luck..yet... But then we ask our resident experts on here ;D if ( fill in the blank) could be the causes of cluster headaches! Fill in the blank with: Agent Orange Breast Milk Masturbation Too Much Sex Not enough Sex Acid Rain Global Warming Moon Phases Ozone Layer Depletion Cutting Down Rain Forests Lake Erie Electromagnetic pulses Microwaves UFOs Desert Storm Syndrome Cats   Clothing Medflies I'm sure people can add a few hundred more! This Slammy Rant is brought to you by the makers of Imitrex and Verapamil... God Bless them! ;D Slammy

Debbie, The latest explanation for colic that has been bandied about by researchers is that colic may be a "survival of the fittest" phenomenon. The smartest and strongest babies use this technique to ensure they get fed and nurtured to enhance their survival. Kind of the squeeky wheel gets the grease scenario. Colic usually starts when babies are 3 weeks old and ends at 3 months. Hey, isn't that the same length of time as a typical CH episodic cycle? LOL Maria

I believe, (and this is just a belief) that colic is the natural result of a change in the baby's diet. First he goes from non gastric nutrition suddenly to gastric nutrition. We know that babies are still developing once born. Perhaps the gastric system is not quite ready. You know that when you suddenly change your diet that you get gastric distress...big time, sometimes!... why not babies? Theirs is a much more shocking change. But, Debbie, I will say that that was an interesting and thoughful hypothesis! Definitely made me think. Sherry

I definately like the "Lake Erie" theory. Think it has something to do with the "snow belt". My children and I were all born and raised in the Cleveland area. I had clusters and my youngest son has clusters. Funny tho, the baby with colic isn't the one who developed the clusters.

The Lake Erie theory holds water........I'm terribly sorry Actually, as one who lives 30 miles east of Lake Erie and about 75 miles south of Buffalo, I didn't have a chance....Oops. I was living in Central New York at the time I developed CH. It was Lake Ontario and Oneida Lake. Poor Catlind. Really a loser old Charlie

Anyone who has a baby with colic should make sure it's not a phisical problem. My daughter had colic then vometing and the docs said it was normal. Nobody would x-ray her.Two years later my wife found the true cause a hernia. After the opporation the colic and vomiting dissapeared.

You are not alone with the hernia thing. This happened to me. I was one and they tell me I was a mess until they operated on my hernia. You're right. Very right. Charlie

Hi Deb, there are a lot of possible reasons why babies cry permanently and then get diagnosed as having "colics" - overlooked hernias are one of the many possible reasons, sure. But, on the other hand, certainly, babies of few months of age can have CH, such cases are described, unfortunately ! So, how get they diagnosed as CHeads, as they can't report themselves the horror they live ??? : The f o r t u n a t e ones among them show the HORNER's SYNDROME during their attacks, and the more fortunates among them have parents who can observe, registrate and report that HORNER's SYNDROME to a MD - and the most fortunates among them then also find a MD who is ready to search in his books for possible reasons of a HORNER's SYNDROME (and there are a lot of very different deseases causing the HORNER's SYNDROME, and that's why HORNER's SYNDROME is not called a desease itself, it's only a possible SYMPTOM of different deseases). That's the way I diagnosed my CH myself in the 2nd week of my very first CH bout 14 years ago. I posted a similar text on the CH.UK web site last year - that time not concerning babies, but concerning one of the easiest ways to diagnose CH (or CPH or SUNCT ). That time I had a very interesting discussion with Simon Bower, the "big boss" of the CH.UK web site: Simon: Reporting this (i.e. the HORNER's SYNDROME) to your doctor might give him/her pause for thought in dismissing your pain. IT'S AN OBJECTIVE THING THAT CAN BE SEEN AND MEASURED, AND IS AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY ACCORDING TO THE IHS FOR DIAGNOSIS OF CH. It was the HORNER's SYNDROME that got my diagnosis right in the end. The doctor was puzzled, until she remembered the existence of HORNER's. At that point I saw the recognition - "HORNER's? Ah, CLUSTER HEADACHE - that explains the pain". Suggests you're right, that we should concentrate on that a little more - after all, pain is subjective, and all those going to a doctor in pain are "in agony" aren't they!! THE HORNER's THOUGH IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE SEEN AND THEREFORE NOT DEVALUATED. ------ Me: Conclusion: If every non-diagnosed clusterhead looked into the mirror and registered the HORNER's during his attacks, and also could well describe it to his doctor, and the doctor looked into an appropriate book, then we would certainly get much quicker the right diagnosis (and treatment). HORNER's SYNDROME together with acute horrible onesided headache can (almost) only indicate a CH ! ... exactly the focusing point: the HORNER's is the o n l y objective symptom of the CH and so it's a b s o l u t e l y b e y o n d q u e s t i o n ! Therefore let's forget all other symptoms all of us know very well and let's claim: ONE-SIDE HEADACHE + HORNER's Syndrome of the same side = CH, as long as you did not exclude them ! (sometimes it also can be CPH or SUNCT) ATB to everybody! Thomas

While I agree that colic can be a cover for other issues, perhaps we should start by asking how many of us had or were diagnosed with colic as babies. Personally, I did not/was not...but that doesn't really matter in my case because I know for a fact that my clusters are due to alien intervention.
