Topic: heat and humidity triggers (Read 418 times) |

Hi all. I'm new to the site, but unfortunately not new to CH. When my headaches first started, I only got them between June and September. I live in NY so summerime. Three summers ago, something changed and they didn't stop. After being treated for sinusitis for three or four summers, I finally saw a neurologist after an alergist said this seemed to be CH.
To make a long story shorter, I have a sense that heat and humidity can be a trigger. Whenever I get overheated, have done something like play tennis, the headache comes on.
Has anyone else experienced a trigger like this? Or heard anything about the effect of heat and humidity, or exercise? I could be out playing golf and by the 12th hole, the CH starts. It only happens though when it is hot and humid!

Rob,
My CH's have gotten much worse over the last week or so with the high heat and high humidty. It must be a factor!

I am in NY as well & this summer has been a bear with the unusual heat & humidity. I do know that heat & humidity ar indeed triggers for me...so I have been extra careful to stay indoors when the heat is really bad...or spent hours floating in the pool...when I start to feel the "burn" of a h/a coming.. i make sure & totally submerge my head right away..that indeed seems to ward it off (so far)..anything that works..right?? lol

Very interesting indeed. I live in NY (state) as well, and was out horseback riding with my daughter this afternoon and it was hot and humid (and damn dusty) and sure as shit, on the way home I got hit. By the time I got home (a 30 min. drive) I was headed straight for a cold shower and my O2 (which isn't the right flow) and I was wondering all the way home if the heat and humidity or the exertion was a trigger. Guess maybe it is. Full blown kip 10 from that one....my puppy's stuffed puppy took a severe beating tonight LOL. It's finally subsided to a 7 but hey, that's a hell of a lot better than a 10.

I always thought my periodic sevoir headaches were sinus becouse they went away when the humidity rose. I have found that heat and bright sunlight are triggers.

Don't even need the humidity. Hot and smoggy will do it. Had to give up using the hot tub many years ago when I realized that was also a trigger.

New York State here too. I had most of my cycles in Fall and Spring. Now and then summer, but I have no evidence for heat or humidity as triggers.
Makes some sense though.

Same for me Charlie. Spring and Fall. I have had cycles that came in the summertime, but not often. The ones I remember were particularly HIDEOUS.
Rzim, I've had an attack come on while on the Tennis court in summertime. Not fun. That was actually one of the few times I threw up from ch. I waited too long (denial?) until too late and combo of the pain, STRESS of the attack, and HEAT made me sick to my stomach. If you feel attack coming on in the heat, my advice is to get the hell outa there to somewhere COLD FAST! 
Don't know if it's a TRIGGER, but sure does not help the situation.

Humidity at times. 15 - 20 degree swings in temperature always bring on a CH. Altitude changes also - air travel above 27K feet. Time zone will occasionally bring on on.

It was 118 here yesterday. No humidity to speak of though.
I have never really noticed heat or humidity to be a trigger for me.
But as Charlie has pointed out...I am weird.

Hey Echo, what part of Minn. are you from? I just got back Wed. after spending a couple of days fishing with my son in the Park Rapids area. I can't wait too move there. Getting back to heat and humidity thing, never been a trigger for me. As a matter of fact, my cycles seem to start when its cool and dry. Go Figure.

Out here in San Francisco the words "hot and humid" do not go together. We are VERY lucky not to have humid summers. BUT, as a chronic sufferer I do find that my ha's are worse when it is cloudy & rainy (thus the humidity).

The lack of humidity allows you to breath just fine. Ya just gotta watch out for the little hairs in yer nose...they fry! LOL
Seriously, it is a whole different world to have heat without humidity. When I lived in VA 100 degrees with 89% humidity would feel like an elephant was sitting on your chest.
But out here it is more like sitting in front of a furnace. Dry hot heat.

Yep - I agree with you 9erfan....It was all of 65 degrees for a high in the City yesterday (enjoyed a fire in the fireplace last evening). Although, I installed a kick-ass hot tub about two years ago, and have only used it a few times in the past 7 months because of this cycle. It triggers an instant 8/9 for me. A hot tub party at Chris' equals loud screams from the yard, and neighbors who wonder what the hell is wrong with me!

Chris! I've been meaning to call you! Actually, called your office a couple of weeks ago and got vm & didn't leave a msg. Wanted to see if your cycle was getting any better. Sounds like you're still suffering! I'm sorry to hear that. I'm trying Botox tomorrow, I'll let you know if I get any positive results.
